Egg sales unfazed by blanket subsidy removal, say Sibu consumers, vendors
SIBU (Aug 1): The removal of the government's blanket egg subsidy, which took effect today, is unlikely to affect sales despite a slight price increase.
Consumer Richard Ampi said eggs remain a daily staple for most people regardless of price changes.
'Whether the price goes up or down, people will continue buying eggs because they are part of our daily meals,' he said when contacted today.
While prices may go up, he said eggs are still affordable and essential.
'If Grade A eggs are too costly, we can always opt for the lower grades such as D or E, which used to cost under RM10 per tray,' he added.
At Sibu Sentral Market, a long-time egg vendor said demand is expected to remain steady.
'The usual prices are RM20 for Grade AA, RM18 for Grade A, RM16 for Grade B, and RM15 for Grade C.
'We will try to maintain these prices even though wholesale prices may increase after the subsidy ends,' he told reporters today.
The trader, who has been selling eggs for 20 years, said his priority is to provide fresh eggs to customers.
'We have loyal customers, and I believe they will continue coming back for our eggs,' said the vendor, who runs the business with his two siblings.

Oasis Home targets RM10 million plus annual revenue from new halal health and wellness product line
PUCHONG: Oasis Home Holding Bhd expects to generate more than RM10 million in yearly revenue from its new halal health supplement and wellness product line developed under a joint venture with livestream marketing agency GIMCare (M) Sdn Bhd. CEO Datuk Jaden Teoh Yee Seang said the figure is based on performance benchmarks from GIMCare and its parent company, GIMmedia, which currently records RM30 million in gross merchandise value monthly across livestream and e-commerce channels. 'GIMCare is doing, in similar but not in the same category we're developing, over RM4 million to RM5 million in monthly revenue. So, if we're saying our yearly target is RM10 million, I think that's a comfortable and not exaggerating estimate. I think it's an attainable target,' he told reporters at the joint venture agreement signing ceremony today between Oasis Home's wholly owned subsidiary, Oasis Wellness International Sdn Bhd, and livestream marketing agency GIMCare (M). Teoh said the upcoming wellness range will prioritise strict regulatory compliance and halal certification. 'We are very good in sourcing the ingredients from overseas especially those who have trademark and also comes with clinical research, the ingredients of the supplements.' Teoh said the joint venture aims to tap into halal markets in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, which have sizeable Muslim populations. 'For example, one of our guests today is from the Ministry of Health who works closely with counterparts in Thailand and Indonesia. If we meet the local requirements, adapting our products to regional markets will be straightforward,' he added. Teoh said Oasis Home's direct-to-consumer business model built on digital sales channels enables cost-efficiency and affordability. 'We don't pay rental or carry heavy operating costs. That's why we can offer premium wellness products at accessible prices. Wellness and healthcare don't have to be expensive but they must comply with regulatory standards.' The joint venture company, OG Alliance Sdn Bhd, will be incorporated with a start-up capital of RM500,000, with Oasis Wellness holding a 51% stake and GIMCare owning the remainder. GIMCare is a wholly owned subsidiary of GIMmedia Sdn Bhd, a multichannel network and top-tier livestream enabler recognised by platforms such as TikTok, Shopee and Lazada. The initial product pipeline includes marine collagen powder drinks, skin health supplements and children's immunity boosters. The products will be distributed via major platforms including TikTok, Shopee and Lazada. OG Alliance is expected to be incorporated by early September, with its first product launch scheduled for the end of the year. Teoh said digital platforms are driving growth in the wellness space, 'In July 2025, TikTok's wellness category alone recorded over RM80 million in monthly revenue. According to IMARC Group, Malaysia's health and wellness market is projected to grow from US$11.4 billion (RM48 billion) in 2024 to US$18 billion by 2033, at a compounded annual growth rate of 4.6%.'

Some workers take on two jobs, delay marriage to cope with living costs
KUALA LUMPUR: The minimum wage rate of RM1,700 has brought some relief to young workers, but some say it remains inadequate to cope with the rising cost of living, especially for those residing in urban areas. A report by Utusan Malaysia found that employees are being forced to make adjustments to their lifestyles to make ends meet. These include holding down two jobs, bringing packed meals to work, cooking at home, and even postponing major life plans such as marriage. Mohammad Noriman Ahmad Zarkhoni, 22, is among those feeling the pinch. He works as both a food delivery rider and a factory operator, as his RM1,500 income from delivery work alone is not enough to cover his monthly expenses. Although the dual workload is exhausting, he said he has little choice. "Time management is crucial to avoid feeling overwhelmed. So far, I'm managing. "However, I do hope there will be an improvement in the minimum wage, especially since the cost of living in the capital is much higher than in rural areas," he said. Similarly, 25-year-old Muhd Rafiq Ridzuan Zainatul Rahman said his income as a food delivery rider is not enough to save for a wedding, forcing him to delay his marriage plans. "The intention to marry is there, but since my savings are still insufficient, I've chosen to continue saving to cover the cost of the wedding ceremony in the future. "I think postponing it is the best decision for now, considering the rising cost of living. I'll need to work longer in order to save enough," he said. Thaqif Adib Marozi, 23, said he also brings his own meals to work but only has time to cook on weekends due to a packed weekday schedule. "On weekdays, I usually eat just once a day and opt for the cheapest meals available. I hope the prices of raw ingredients won't continue to rise," he said. On July 23, the Human Resources Ministry announced that the full implementation of the RM1,700 minimum monthly wage will take effect on Aug 1. It will apply to all employers, regardless of the number of employees. Failure to comply with the Minimum Wage Order under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 is an offence punishable by a fine of up to RM10,000 per employee.

KUCHING: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Young Engineers Section (YES) Sabah branch has once again proven its excellence after being named Outstanding IEM YES Branch 2025, its third consecutive win since 2023. The recognition was presented during the closing dinner of the IEM YES National Summit 2025 at Theatre Hotel, Kuching, which gathered some 300 young engineers from across the country. The Sabah delegation was led by IEM Sabah Vice Chairman Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, along with YES Sabah Chairman Lee Tze Yei and Immediate Past Chairman Ag. Khairul Kamaludin. A total of 17 enthusiastic delegates from YES Sabah and four student representatives from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) represented the state at the summit. Nell from the IEM UMS Student Section was selected as one of five vocalists to perform the newly-composed theme song 'We Are Engineers', showcasing Sabah's talent on the national stage.
