5 Things Colts want to see from Anthony Richardson in preseason game vs. Ravens

USA Today4 days ago
Here are several things that the Indianapolis Colts will be looking for from Anthony Richardson as he starts against the Ravens.
What are Shane Steichen and the coaching staff looking to see from Anthony Richardson in the Indianapolis Colts' preseason matchup with the Baltimore Ravens?
As Steichen has said on multiple occasions, he is looking for consistency at the quarterback position. Whoever can best provide that will be the Week 1 starter.
However, consistency isn't only about how many passes are completed. That's obviously a key part of it, but it's not the only thing.
So what other elements will be a part of that decision-making process?
Over the course of training camp, Steichen and passing game coordinator Alex Tanney have each shared what the team is looking for from both Richardson and Daniel Jones.
What Shane Steichen wants to see from Anthony Richardson and Colts' QBs
"I think the operation, the consistency on a day-to-day basis," Steichen told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "Obviously, knowing the situation, taking care of the football, being smart, and finding completions. We gotta make sure our offense is moving at a high rate up and down the field, and that's what we'll be looking for."
What Alex Tanney wants to see from Anthony Richardson and Colts' QBs
"It's quite a few things," Tanney said, via Locked on Colts. "It's command of the offense and the huddle. It's command of the line of scrimmage--if you have multiple plays called, getting us in and out of the right play. Moving guys pre-snap, snapping things at the right time, and then making good decisions with the football, and being the leader of the offense. It's all-encompassing. There's a lot of things that go into it."
A priority for Richardson this offseason was on being more accurate on the short to intermediate throws. To help accomplish that, he focused on his footwork, which for a quarterback, is where proper mechanics and accuracy often begin.
The results from that work have shown up on the practice field, including during the joint practice with Baltimore.
Steichen said that Richardson will play a quarter and a half with Jones then taking over. Against Green Bay next week, the roles will flip.

(AP) — Forty-one years, four months and a week later, the Colts were back in Owings Mills. Indianapolis held a joint practice Tuesday with the Baltimore Ravens, two days before the teams' preseason matchup. The Colts have played several games in Baltimore since moving from Charm City to Indianapolis in 1984, but this practice brought them even closer to the defining scene of that relocation — moving vans essentially sneaking the team out of its facility in Owings Mills in the middle of the night in late March of that year. There's now a university campus where the Colts' facility used to be, about a 15-minute drive from where the Ravens practice. The rivalry between Baltimore and Indianapolis isn't particularly heated anymore, with the Ravens more worried about teams such as Pittsburgh in their own division. Still, Tuesday's practice included the type of skirmish that is fairly common in joint sessions like this. 'You can't get out of a joint practice without a fight,' Colts safety Camryn Bynum said. 'Obviously, it's going to get chippy, especially during the special teams phase. That's a staple in joint practices.' Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen announced that Anthony Richardson would start at quarterback against the Ravens and play about 1 1/2 quarters, with Daniel Jones playing half a quarter. Then the plan is to start Jones in the following game against Green Bay, with the playing time split reversed. While those two compete for the starting job with the Colts, Baltimore will keep two-time MVP Lamar Jackson off the field. Coach John Harbaugh confirmed that neither Jackson nor star running back Derrick Henry will play Thursday — and safety Kyle Hamilton wasn't suited up Tuesday. This may be as close as Jackson gets to live action against an opponent before the regular season starts — although he said he was careful not to get too involved in the fight. 'I'm chilling. I know the cameras (are) on all of us, so I can't really do too much,' Jackson said. 'But I feel like our guys handled their own.' Ravens defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike took the scrap in stride. 'I was far away. I didn't see exactly what happened,' he said. 'I heard (Ravens cornerback) Nate (Wiggins) was slugging somebody or something. I don't know, but it was crazy.' Veteran defensive lineman Brent Urban was back with the Ravens after signing over the weekend. One of the highlights for the Colts was an interception by rookie safety Hunter Wohler on a pass by Jackson. 'The D-Line made a play and got him flushed, and knowing that it's a towards-the-end-of-the-game situation, you've got to keep your depth and not bite down low,' Wohler said. 'And just try to follow the quarterback and hope the ball finds you, and that time it did.' Wohler said linebacker Segun Olubi told him he'd have a chance to intercept Jackson. 'I was like, 'Bro, that's not going to happen. ... He's not going to be in when I'm in there,'' Wohler said. 'I'm with the twos. And then yeah, it ended up happening. So that was just kind of a funny little moment that we got to enjoy.' Steichen said Wohler might be keeping the ball. 'Even though it was practice,' Steichen said. 'I said, 'You keeping the ball?' He's like, 'Yeah, it was Lamar.'' Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust. Please consider supporting us with a subscription. Cayden Steele may be reached atCSteele@

Anthony Richardson having 'best camp ever,' says Colts captain

Indianapolis Colts' offensive lineman Quenton Nelson has seen improved play from quarterback Anthony Richardson this summer. In fact, Nelson said that Richardson was having his "best camp ever." So what is it about Richardson's performance up to this point that has stood out to Nelson? "I would just say his energy," Nelson said on Sunday. "His experience going into Year 3. Maturing and also what he's doing on the field with progressions and accuracy and spreading the ball around to all different guys. He's been doing a really good job." After completing just 47% of his passes last season, Richardson's priority this offseason was on being more accurate on the short to intermediate throws. To accomplish this, he went back to his mechanics and prioritized his footwork, which for a quarterback is oftentimes where accuracy begins. The results of that work have often being showing up on the practice field this summer for Richardson, which includes going 11-for-16 passing during Sunday's practice. There have still been down days, but overall, he's been much more consistent and has bounced back well following those tough outings. Following the Colts' night practice, Steichen said that everything for Richardson was "cleaner" and that his decision-making has been sound. Steichen would also tell ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that he's seen "great strides" from Richardson as a leader. After having to exit the Colts' preseason opener early, it'll be vital that Richardson displays this improved play against Green Bay, where he won't start, but will see extended action. Shane Steichen with high praise for Colts' QB Anthony Richardson after latest practice

Following the Indianapolis Colts' latest training camp practice, which took place under the lights at Grand Park, head coach Shane Steichen had some high praise for quarterback Anthony Richardson and his play right now. 'Everything's cleaner right now,' Steichen said, via 'He's playing at a high level, he's making good decisions with the football, taking the completions when needed, so it's been really good to see.' After stacking two strong showings during Monday and Tuesday's practices, Richardson continued to build upon that play on Thursday with another efficient performance. According to the Indy Star's Joel Erickson, Richardson was 14-of-19 passing on Thursday evening. Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan would write in his takeaways article that Richardson was also able to generate the most chunk plays that he's had in a practice up to this point. The primary focus for Richardson this offseason has been on the short to intermediate throws--an area where he has to become more accurate after completing just 47% of his passes last season. To accomplish this, Richardson focused on his mechanics, specifically his footwork, which for a quarterback, is often the foundation for accuracy and where proper mechanics begin. "I think footwork is key," offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said. "When your feet are right, your timing is right, you're in rhythm, the ball comes out a little bit more rhythmically. The feet lead the whole thing. "So when you're feet are off you might be ready to throw when the receiver's not ready and now your body is a little bit one direction or the other, you don't quite throw the ball as well as you should." Along with emphasizing his footwork, Richardson has also altered his diet, according to ESPN's Stephen Holder. This means fewer sweets and making sure he is hydrated. Richardson is now down 10 pounds compared to last season. The offseason work for Richardson is turning into results on the practice field. He's more comfortable and more confident in what he's being asked to do. "I think his comfort level within the offense is rising and rising and rising," Cooter said of Richardson's play. "Every year, every rep, every game week, or every offseason phase, he's getting more and more comfortable. That allows you to play a little bit faster at quarterback, which can let your feet play better. "Can let your feet time up better and then the nuts and bolts of things is the offseason work he's putting in to make his throws, to work his footwork, to work his upperbody, all that stuff is an on going push at the quarterback position to be accurate really, really consistently to be able to throw a bunch of different doing a nice job right now."
