Salvation Army gets $100K for utilities aid program, holds fan giveaway
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Folks with the Salvation Army of Wichita Falls wrapped up National Salvation Army Week with a huge fan giveaway, which is also the perfect time for these rising temps!
The giveaway kicked off this morning, but not before Salvation Army officials were gifted a $100,000 check from TXU Energy.
That money will go toward the Salvation Army's utilities assistance program, which helps clients pay their energy bills.
After the check presentation, the line started moving quickly for those who showed up to get their free box or oscillating fan.
Kim Campbell, Senior Manager for TXU Energy, said she couldn't think of a better organization to help this year.
'They are the heart of our local communities, right? And being able to help people when they're struggling and to see the smiles on their faces this morning as people are receiving the box fans, and just so grateful for us being a part of the local community, I love it. It's part of my favorite part of my job,' Campbell said.

Salvation Army and Fans 4 Oklahoma fan drive underway; here's how to help
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The warm, even hot, temperatures are upon us, which means high heat is on the horizon. You can help people stay cool this season by taking part in the Salvation Army fan drive. Free Boat? All this mechanic had to do was bring it back from the bottom of Arcadia Lake KFOR has once again partnered with The Salvation Army to help provide relief for Oklahomans. To some, they're just box fans, but to others, they can be life-changing during the summer season. 'It does help those families who can't afford A/C, want to keep their electric bill down,' Salvation Army Social Services Manager Paul Durrett said. 'So, it does help those families, you know, kids, elders, and the vulnerable people.' Just last year, the Salvation Army says your donations ended up in the hands of 300 people who needed them. This is all part of the annual fan drive, and this year, they're already noticing a need for them earlier than usual. 'We started getting calls last month wondering where we're going to get fans,' Durrett said. You can help out people in need, and it starts at Westlake ACE Hardware locations across the city. 'We are allowing individuals to round up at the register, and all of those donations will come back to purchase box fans for the community members in need,' Salvation Army's Development and Marketing Manager Annie Perkins said. That event is going on until June 7. You can also buy a box fan and donate it to the Salvation Army facility off NW 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Another way to help is to drop a fan off at the upcoming fan drive with the Bricktown Rotary and KFOR . 'Which will be held at Rococo's on Western,' Perkins said. 'That'll be taking place on Monday, June 9th from 4-6:30 p.m.' Donations can also be made online. Durrett said every bit counts. 'There's a lot of people that want to donate either money, fans to this cause,' he said. 'So, it's big. It shows people helping people out.' The Salvation Army plans to hand fans out in mid-June while supplies last. If you need one, you can visit the Salvation Army facility off NW 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue on Tuesday's and Thursday's during regular business hours. Texoma prepares for severe weather: Possible wind gusts and hail ahead
TEXOMA (KFDX/KJTL) – Significant severe weather is expected to take place in the Texoma area today, Sunday, June 8. The timing is from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., but could be as early as 2 p.m. Significant damaging wind gusts (80-100 mph), extremely large hail (baseball-sized and larger), and a few tornadoes will all be possible. There is potential for a strong tornado and softball-sized hail in the afternoon. Still, the most likely concern is significant damaging wind gusts, leading to widespread wind damage and power outages across the areas hit hardest. If we don't see a single tornado, this will still likely be our most significant severe weather event of the season, just because of the hurricane-force wind gusts. Between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., we may have a couple of supercells over Texoma. Conditions will favor these supercells to be capable of all hazards. These cells will eventually congeal into a system that pushes to the east, still capable of withstanding all hazards and significant wind damage. While these early cells are occurring, more supercells develop across the panhandle. The cells will congeal into a system that will sweep across most of Texoma from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. All hazards are possible with this system, but the potential for 80-100 mph winds will be the greatest concern. Wichita Falls Symphony hosts jazz night at Kemp Center during Art Walk
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) – The June Art Walk is here, and the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra invites the community to a jazz night at the Kemp Center. While all the fun continues downtown in Wichita Falls on Thursday, June 5, there will also be fun activities at the Sculpture Garden at the Kemp Center, weather permitting. The Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra will be playing live jazz tunes while The Traveling Tavern bar serves up beverages. The event will proceed rain or shine, but if it does rain, the orchestra will relocate into the Great Hall. Seats are limited, but you are welcome to bring lawn chairs to enjoy the live music.
