Millions of Americans who receive a monthly check from the Social Administration Association may have concerns about future checks and payments as part of the Donald Trump administration's efforts to cut federal spending, Social Security is enduring job cuts, office closings, a revamped customer service strategy – and scrutiny for fraud.
Social Security payments for most recipients come out on Wednesdays throughout the month. Those who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) should get their payment on Tuesday, April 1.
The Social Security Administration suggests if you don't receive your payment on the expected date, allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency; most arrive timely because 99% of beneficiaries are paid electronically.
Social security was created to promote economic security for country's population and initially designed to pay a continuing income to retired workers age 65 or older, according to ssa.gov. Here's a look at when additions were introduced:
1939: Survivors Insurance − for families of a deceased worker
1956: Disability Insurance − for disabled workers and their family members
1965: Medicare − providing health insurance for our beneficiaries
1972: Supplemental Security Income −needs-based program funded by the U.S. Treasury general fund to provide payments to people with limited income and resources who are ages 65 and older, blind or disabled. Children with disabilities can also receive SSI.
One in five Americans currently receive social security benefits, with more than 65 million beneficiaries.
The Social Security Administration's yearly distribution schedules for 2025 and 2026 are available online so that you can use the calendar for budgeting purposes.
Regular Social Security retirement benefits will be sent out on the SSA's usual schedule:
Wednesday, April 9: Birth dates between the first and 10th of the month.
Wednesday, April 16: Birth dates between the 11th and the 20th of the month.
Wednesday, April 23: Birth dates between the 21st and the 31st of the month.
Supplemental Security Income provides monthly benefits to those with limited income or resources who are 65 or older, blind or have a qualifying disability. Children with a qualifying disability can also get SSI, according to the SSA's website.
In general, adults who qualify for SSI do not have monthly wages above $2,019.
Those who may be eligible for SSI can begin the application process online, in person at your local Social Security office, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time during the work week.

Factbox-Breakdown of U.S. tariffs on China since Trump's first term

BEIJING (Reuters) -Billions of dollars of Chinese goods have been impacted by additional U.S. tariffs since 2018, initially under the first Donald Trump presidency and later under the Biden administration. Returning to the White House this year, Trump has imposed even more duties on China. The U.S. tariffs range from those imposed under Section 301 of its trade act due to what Washington claims are unfair Chinese trade practices, to duties under Section 232 levied for national security reasons. This year, Trump has imposed another 20% levies on all Chinese goods, saying Beijing has not done enough to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States. So-called reciprocal tariffs, under which the U.S. will match duties imposed by other countries, have also been levied in a bid to rebalance trade flows. Below are the U.S. tariffs on China effective as of June 12, 2025: Tariff Rate Products Effective date Reciprocal 10% All Paused for 90 days until Aug 10, 2025 Fentanyl 20% All Mar 4, 2025 Section Up to List 1: Pharmaceuticals, July 6, 2018 301 25% iron and steel, aluminium, vehicles and aircraft, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus and more. List 4A: Prepared Feb 14, 2020 foodstuffs, beverages, mineral products, fertilizers, footwear, wood products, ceramic products, glass, textiles, precious and base metals, machinery and mechanical appliances, vehicles, aircraft, vessels, art, antiques and more. In September 2019, the U.S. imposed 15% tariffs on more than $120 billion of Chinese goods under Section 301, which it then halved to 7.5% less than six months later. The 25% U.S. tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese goods under the earlier List 1-3 remain unchanged. In September 2024, the U.S. Trade Representative under the Biden administration announced additional tariffs of 25-100% on 14 product groups following a four-year review of the Section 301 tariff actions. The levies were imposed on strategic Chinese sectors or sectors where the United States has made significant domestic investments. Additional tariffs on goods under Section 301: Effective date EVs 100% Sep 27, 2024 Solar cells, syringes and 50% needles Non-lithium-ion battery parts, 25% lithium-ion electrical vehicle batteries, other critical minerals, ship-to-shore cranes, steel and aluminium products, facemasks Semiconductors 50% Jan 1, 2025 Lithium-ion non-electrical 25% Jan 1, 2026 vehicle batteries, medical gloves, natural graphite, permanent magnets In addition to the above duties, the first Trump administration in 2018 imposed a range of tariffs under Section 232 aimed at restricting goods deemed a threat to national security, including all aluminium and steel imports, shutting most Chinese suppliers out of the U.S. market. European shares tumble as trade, geopolitical tensions mount

(Reuters) -European shares dropped on Thursday, in their fourth straight session of declines, as trade optimism stemming from U.S.-China trade talks faded, while mounting geopolitical tensions led to the markets being more cautious. The pan-European STOXX 600 was down 0.4% at 549.41 points at 0707 GMT, while most regional bourses were also in the red. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he was willing to extend the deadline for trade talks but it was not likely necessary as the U.S. will send offer letters to countries in a week or so. However, markets were a little concerned about the European Union being able to clinch a deal before Trump's July 8 deadline - when the tariff pause expires. Geopolitical worries added more caution to markets already navigating U.S. tariff-driven uncertainty after trade talks with China did not offer a solution to de-escalate longstanding tensions. U.S. personnel were being moved out of the Middle East because "it could be a dangerous place" amid rising tensions with Iran, Trump said on Wednesday. In the market, travel and leisure stocks were the worst hit, down 1.7%, while industrial miners fell 1.1%. Among stocks, BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI) jumped 7.7% after raising its long-term financial targets ahead of its investor day. Tesco gained 1.3% after Britain's biggest food retailer's domestic sales growth accelerated in its first quarter.
