Look inside the elegant Georgian property that's appearing on Scotland's Home of the Year
In the case of Rebecca Brown, applying to appear on Scotland's Home of the Year was a rather impromptu decision.
'It was closing the next day, and they replied very quickly to ask if I'd send some photos,' says the property developer and profit coach. 'Then I got a call to say that the producer is in Edinburgh next Thursday. Can she come and see you? And then the next thing, yes, I was in. It happened really quickly, and I had got a camera crew at my house before I knew it'.
She'll be starring on episode three, East, and will be going up against an extended bungalow in Anstruther, and a tenement flat in Stockbridge.
To make the shortlist is a real thrill for Brown, as she is a huge SHOTY fan. She even watches the Welsh version of the series, and her favourite judge on the Scottish round is Anna Campbell-Jones.
'I like her because she's consistent, but I think Banjo is good fun too,' says Brown, who lives in her garden flat with her husband, Derek.
On a superficial level, you don't see the amount of work that's gone into this couple's property. They bought it in 2021, and had to completely reconfigure the space before actually moving in. They used GLM Architects in Edinburgh to do the work, since the company are specialists in historic buildings and the flat is A-listed.
In what might be considered an unusual move, they changed it from a four bedroom property, to a two bedroom, in order to get the living spaces that they wanted.
'It took us two years to get planning, to get the warrants in place and decide what we wanted to do, and then it took 12 months to actually get the work done,' she says. 'So on the ground floor, which is the floor you come in on, we basically reconfigured it to give us a bigger entrance hall, and then we reconfigured the master bedroom. Downstairs, the kitchen was a bedroom and utility room. To do the work, we took out three supporting walls, so we were propping up the whole six storey property'.
Thankfully, the nearby residents aren't at home very often, so didn't complain about any noise.
'We were quite lucky in that the neighbours immediately above us don't live there very often, but I mean, we did disturb the neighbours., there's no doubt about it. It could have been worse though,' she says.
As far as the interior decor goes, Brown, who owns a vast back catalogue of 25 Beautiful Homes Magazine, likes to think of her style as 'understated elegance'.
This is evident throughout the chic property.
'I've never been a dan of clutter and I'm not really into twee,' says Brown, who has just signed up for an interior design course to develop her part-time passion.
Her flat mainly features white walls, and judiciously placed artworks, including Vettriano prints. The colour palette includes just a few of Brown's favourite hues.
'Green is my favourite colour, definitely. And then in the sitting room, I've got the gold, which also appears in the bathroom,' she says. 'In the sitting room, there's a bespoke rug that's pink and it was lovely to put that splash in there, and then the cushions pick up on all those colours'.
There are some lovely and tactile soft furnishings around the flat, but the most sybaritic room is probably the bathroom, with its gorgeous slipper bath.
The couple loved this piece so much that they bought it from The Albion Bath Company a year before the property renovation was finished, and had to move it from room to room while the work was completed.
However, Brown's favourite space of all is probably the downstairs kitchen, which was inspired by a New York apartment. It contrasts against the rest of the flat, as it has an industrial feel.
'The comfortable and understated style has always been what I've wanted for sitting rooms, bedrooms and so on, but the kitchen was my chance to do something different,' she says. 'I've always wanted to go slightly more industrial, and this was a chance to do it, because we completely gutted the place'.
So, there's granite and a dark floor, bare lightbulbs and a pair of glossy black tables that Brown had specially made. The look is softened with plants, and colourful prints. It's dramatic and extremely cool.
'We love entertaining friends and family there. I do love the kitchen, but then I also love my sitting room because it's cosy, and my bedroom because I can just sit and see the view to Dean Bridge,' she says.
However, we're sure that many viewers of Scotland's Home of the Year will be most jealous of the couple's vast wine cellar, which is under the pavement. Let's hope the judges haven't taken a corkscrew with them.
'I think they'll like that space,' says Brown. 'I don't know if many people have still got the original wine cellars and are using them for that purpose. The people we bought the property from, they just used it like a shed, as storage, with tools and stuff in there. I wanted to use it as a sort of larder, and my husband said, no, we'll start collecting wine'.
The couple might have to have a little snifter before watching their episode.
After all, Brown has the pre-fame jitters, and the couple will be coming back from holiday that day, and are hoping to get to the flat on time.
'I'm slightly wondering what I've done,' she says, 'I wasn't even expecting to get on the show'.
Episode three of Scotland's Home of the Year is on BBC One Scotland on Monday May 5 at 8.30pm-9pm, www.bbc.co.uk

Ioan Gruffudd And Bianca Wallace Are Expecting Their First Child Together
Actor Ioan Gruffudd and his new wife Bianca Wallace have revealed they are expecting a baby. The Welsh actor, 51, announced their big news on Father's Day with an Instagram post. 'Baby Gruffudd poppin' out to say hello!' he wrote, alongside a black and white photo of him kissing Bianca's blossoming bump. The couple were inundated with well wishes following their announcement. Their baby joy comes two months after Ioan and Bianca, 32, tied the knot. While it's the first baby for the pair, who went public with their relationship in October 2021, it would be Ioan's third child – he also shares daughters Ella, 15, and Elsie, 11, with ex-wife Alice Evans. Sources said that the news is a 'gut punch' to Alice, who has expressed her fears of becoming homeless following their split. The 56-year-old actress was married to Gruffud for 14 years before they split in early 2021. Despite being formally divorced in July 2023, they continue to be embroiled in a bitter battle over financial support and custody of their daughters. 'Alice will be absolutely fuming over this. She's made no secret of the fact she's destitute looking after the two kids, so to have him rub how well he's doing in her face is a real gut-punch,' a source said. 'For Ioan to not only break the news like that but do it on Father's Day… it's yet another horribly upsetting saga for her to deal with.' Last month, Alice posted that she was facing homelessness after being evicted from her LA home after being 'unable to pay' her rent amid financial woes. 'Four years of hell. And now the girls and I are going to be homeless. Somebody please help,' she wrote. 'I think I have reached rock bottom. In 16 days we have nowhere to go. Does anybody have a spare room? I'm so sorry for this. So embarrassed.' She set up a GoFundMe Divorce fundraiser which raised over $18,000, and earlier this month, she revealed that she, her daughters and their dog Emma have 'a roof over their heads'. 'We are in our new place! I am so happy, thrilled, grateful and especially thankful,' she told supporters. Shereen Low is a senior news and entertainment writer for Grazia UK

Touching moment Welsh bride left in tears by surprise at her wedding
Touching moment Welsh bride left in tears by surprise at her wedding Elanwy Evans-Carpenter was left shocked when the surprise unfolded as the curtains opened during the wedding speeches, saying: 'I had no idea about it' A Welsh bride was left in years after being surprised with a touching tribute at her wedding. Elanwy Evans-Carpenter, from Glanaman, sadly lost her father Linden Evans suddenly in 2021 and her mother Yolanda Evans suddenly in 2023. While getting married to her partner, Matthew Edwards-Carpenter, at Oldwalls in Gower, Elanwy's maid of honour Ffion Thomas pulled out all the stops for an incredibly touching surprise. Linden was the co-founder of the Cor Meibion Dyffryn Aman Choir in Ammanford, which he began 35 years ago and which Elanwy describes as a big part of his life. As a touching surprise, Ffion organised for the Cor Meibion Dyffryn Aman Choir to attend and perform at Elanwy's wedding so that her father's voice could still be heard at her wedding. Speaking about the emotional moment, Elanwy said: "I had no idea about it... it was a complete surprise! At the end of her speech she mentioned having my dad's voice around the place and having him here with us. "Then all of the sudden the curtains opened during the speeches and just as she finished hers and the choir was revealed and they just started singing. "It was amazing. It is an emotional day anyway and I managed to, throughout most of the day I kept my tears in, but when that happened I just burst out into tears then. It was really nice, I loved it." Article continues below Elanwy with the choir (Image: Tayla and Co ) Talking about how Ffion, who also enlisted the other bridesmaids and Matthew in on the secret, managed to organise such a moving moment, Elanwy said: "Really lovely of her, she went above and beyond." The choir actually sneaked in through the supplier entrance to be able to pull off the full surprise, without Elanwy suspecting a thing. Having lost both her mother and father Elanwy said: "It's been a really tough few years, it has just been so lovely to have a friend dear to me, do something like that for me, I couldn't have asked for anyone better." Elanwy and Ffion have been friends since school, becoming close friends in 2010. Stay informed on Carms news by signing up to our newsletter here . 'One of a kind' Roald Dahl sketches to be sold at auction
Rare drawings by celebrated children's author Roald Dahl are to be sold at an auction in Edinburgh after being found in an envelope. The 'one-of-a-kind' sketches were drawn with a black ballpoint pen by the Welsh-born author for his memoir 'Boy' in 1984. They are the only known drawings that Dahl produced before his death aged 74 in 1990. The sketches will now be sold as part of Lyon & Turnbull's books and manuscripts sale in the Capital on June 18, and are estimated to fetch between £20,000-£30,00. In Boy, Dahl recalled various exploits from his childhood, including playing a prank with his friends on the local sweetshop owner, Mrs Pratchett, by putting a dead mouse in a gobstopper jar. Dahl drew a mouse lying on top of the sweets with its legs in the air to illustrate the escapade. He had being approached to help by publishing house Jonathan Cape as his usual illustrator, Quentin Blake, was on holiday. The drawings were found in an envelope marked 'Dahl's drawings & odds and sods' which belonged to Ian Craig, the art director at Jonathan Cape. Mr Craig, who died in 2023, created the final illustrations for the book, inspired by Dahl's drawings, and received a blue cashmere cardigan as a gift from the author. The sketches being auctioned are part of the production archive for Boy from Mr Craig's estate. Mr Craig oversaw the production of Boy and the archive includes his designs, as well as the original page layouts and correspondence. He also came up with the title, and received a letter from Dahl saying: 'I must thank you for coming up with the first sensible title for my book. 'Boy' is fine. We all like it…' Mr Craig, who grew up in Ipswich, graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and joined Jonathan Cape in 1973, five years before Dahl began a partnership with illustrator Blake. His widow Kate Craig, who also worked at Jonathan Cape, said: 'The publication of Boy was on a very tight publication schedule. 'As Quentin Blake was away on holiday, Ian asked Dahl if he could help with the illustrations. 'Dahl ended up producing a variety of sketches which Ian used as inspiration for his own drawings. 'Ian never got paid for the illustrations, but Dahl did give him one of his trademark blue cashmere cardigans as a thank-you, which he treasured.' Dominic Somerville-Brown, Lyon & Turnbull's rare books and manuscripts specialist, said: 'It's absolutely thrilling to see Roald Dahl's one-of-a-kind, hand-drawn sketches up close. 'They are a unique addition to his canon and allow us to observe the transformation of his childhood memories into the printed form, a medium in which they would be cherished by generations of readers. 'Ian Craig undoubtedly played a key role in Dahl's publishing success, overseeing not only the production of Boy, but many more of his famous children's stories. 'This archive gives an insight into the creative processes behind a book still enjoyed by children across the world today.'
