Paris: Three people have been arrested for climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris without permission - after one of them also performed a BASE jump by parachute from the famous landmark.
According to police sources, all three were arrested on Saturday after a representative of the tower's operating company filed a complaint.
The Eiffel Tower is one of France's most popular tourist attractions and is known in the country as the 'dame de fer' (iron lady). Around 6 million people visit the monument every year. Located not far from the Seine, the more than 130-year-old tower was built for the Paris World's Fair and completed in 1889.(DPA)

Two killed in large explosion in north-western Syria

Beirut: At least two people have been killed in a large explosion near the city of Idlib in north-western Syria, officials said on Thursday. Four others were injured, according to the local health authority. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor which obtains its information from a network of local informants, reported that four people had been killed in the incident, and two injured. Syrian civil defence said the cause of the explosion is not yet known, and that its workers at the scene are involved in a large-scale operation. Eyewitnesses spoke of several subsequent explosions. The Observatory said that the explosions occurred in a weapons depot belonging to foreign fighters. Drones were reportedly seen in the air at the time of the incident. (DPA)

Estonia expels Russian diplomat over alleged subversive activities

Riga: Estonia has declared a staff member of the Russian embassy in Tallinn persona non grata and expelled him from the country over alleged subversive activities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tallinn said on Wednesday the chargé d'affaires of the Russian mission has been informed of the decision. 'The diplomat in question has been directly and actively involved in undermining the constitutional order and legal system of Estonia, as well as in dividing Estonian society, contributing to the crimes against the state, including several offences related to sanctions violations,' Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in a statement. An Estonian citizen has already been convicted in connection with these activities, the minister said. 'The Russian embassy's ongoing interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Estonia must end and by expelling the diplomat,' Tsahkna added. (DPA)

Some 21,000 detained in Iran during 12-day war with Israel: Report

Iranian security authorities detained around 21,000 people during the 12-day war against Israel in June, according to official figures released on Tuesday. Among them, 261 individuals were arrested on suspicion of espionage and 172 for unauthorized photo and video recordings, police spokesman General Saeed Montazerolmahdi said, as reported by state radio. He did not provide details on the majority of the arrests. During the conflict, more than 40,000 police officers were deployed around the clock on the streets, Montazerolmahdi added. Nationwide, over 1,000 checkpoints were established, according to the report. In June, Israel, together with the United States, bombed key nuclear facilities in Iran. Despite the ceasefire, the fundamental conflict between the arch-enemies persists, with no diplomatic solution in sight. Iran's leadership has responded domestically with a wave of repression since the war. (DPA)
