Covington Middle School faces ongoing delays following carbon monoxide leak
COVINGTON, Va. (WFRX) – Covington Middle School continues to delay the return of students and staff after a carbon monoxide investigation that caused an evacuation on January 31.
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Covington Emergency Services, and local first responders confirmed that a gas oven and a ventilation system were not working to standards leading to the release of carbon monoxide.
The oven and ventilation system were removed from the school, and the board of supervisors hired independent contractors to assess the building before students and staff return.
'All of those involved are working to be very thorough, and we appreciate the patience and grace of our students, staff, and community,' said AHPS leaders Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson.
'Important Information' on the main page, AHPS features 'CMS January 31 FAQ and other Documents.' Of particular interest is 'Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the January 31st Evacuation.' The document is updated regularly as part of AHPS' efforts to keep the community informed. Questions can be submitted to AHPSinfo@ahps.k12.va.us.
'We thank our community for its support as we continue to move forward with our investigations. We appreciate the support and help,' Halterman and Snead-Johnson said.
Students will continue remote instruction until the school is cleared to open.

Johnson joked, while Fallon looked towards the ceiling and admitted that he couldn't meet her gaze — and didn't know where he should look. Fallon tried to get the interview back on track but things were derailed once again when Johnson got concerned that she might be a little too exposed. "Tell me if there's a problem," Johnson pleaded. "Keep my posture real good. Does anyone have, like, a blanket I could wear?" While Fallon tried to reassure her that there was "not quite a problem" yet and everything was still going "according to plan," he did offer her a tiny handkerchief to attempt to cover up her chest. "That's perfect! No one will even notice the difference. You look great...[but] I don't want to ruin your outfit. You look gorgeous," Fallon said. After Johnson removed the handkerchief, Fallon joked that he was listing it on eBay as soon as he got home — although there's no listing on the auction website just yet! In the end, Fallon presented Johnson with a cardigan that her father Don Johnson had gifted him. A visibly relieved Johnson used it to cover up for the next few moments — but by the end of the interview, she had ditched her cover up. The actress, 35, portrays matchmaker Lucy in the romantic comedy, out June 13. "Materialists is about a matchmaker in New York City who is very, very good at her job, and she's also sort of trying to figure out for herself what love means and what is actually really valuable in life," Johnson told Fallon. "It's sort of a bit of a love triangle." The film follows Lucy as she is courted by a wealthy man who lives in a $12 million penthouse apartment (Pascal), and her ex who has not moved on (Chris Evans). Johnson said she knew Pascal prior to shooting. "Pedro and I were homies, yeah," she said. "We actually do hang out all the time, when we're in the same place." Fallon then presented a photograph of the pair at a Stevie Nicks concert in London. "He's wearing my -- that's my sweater," Johnson pointed out. "He does that a lot. He takes my clothes. Yeah, he's like always underdressed -- well, I mean like he's wearing a t-shirt, and it's cold outside. Not like he forgot his pants." Johnson and Fallon also played a game of Fast Forward during the actress' visit to The Tonight Show. Johnson, the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, is best known for starring in Fifty Shades of Grey and its sequels. Charles Ray selected for new Vigo County magistrate post
Vigo County judges have appointed Charles Ray to the county's new magistrate position, Vigo Superior Court Division 1 Judge Charles Johnson said Monday. Ray's start date will be July 1. Ray's appointment came on the heels of passage of House Bill 1144 in May, which reduced or added a number of judicial posts based on county judges' work loads. Vigo County was allowed to add one position, that of a magistrate of general jurisdiction. 'Prior to this bill, Vigo County had a juvenile court magistrate that was only able to handle juvenile issues such as Child In Need of Services cases and paternity cases,' Johnson said last month. 'With the addition of a general jurisdiction magistrate, we are able to provide relief to the court system by reallocating some of the case load from the juvenile magistrate to this new position.' The magistrate will also be able to oversee criminal cases. 'The case load allocation plan is still being worked on by the judges, but we do feel that this new magistrate will be of a great help to the court system,' Johnson said. Ray was born in Cincinnati and raised in West Terre Haute. He is a graduate of Wabash College and received his law degree from Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law. When Charles returned to Terre Haute, he joined the law firm of Cox, Zwerner, Gambill and Sullivan, representing clients in various civil matters. After several years in practice, Charles was hired by the Vigo County Prosecutor's Office in May of 2017 and worked as a deputy prosecutor.
