BEIJING, June 25, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On June 23, a press conference held in Beijing announced that the 2025 Global Digital Economy Conference (GDEC 2025) will officially open on July 2. Themed "Building a Digitally Friendly City," this year's conference features a "1+6+N" framework encompassing opening ceremonies, a main forum, thematic forums, and special events. It aims to provide a platform for exchange and cooperation on global digital economy development, emphasizing harmonious coexistence between technology and humanity, cities and ecosystems. The conference will highlight four key aspects: openness and sharing, cutting-edge focus, industrial integration, and enhanced experience.
Building a New Platform for International Cooperation and a Model for Global Collaboration
This year's conference sees the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) joining as a co-organizer for the first time, launching the collaboration project "UNDP Digital Friendliness and Sustainable Innovation Lab for the Digital Economy." For the first time, the conference expands its international footprint to Europe, collaborating closely with events such as the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2025 and Germany's FUTUROMUNDO Multikonferenz & Festival. These partnerships aim to promote China's approach to global digital transformation.
Deputy Director Liu Weiliang of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization stated that the event will attract over 300 international guests from more than 50 countries and major international organizations, including the World Trade Organization, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This gathering will foster mutual trust and cross-border cooperation among cities across technological, economic, and cultural domains.
Focusing on Cutting-Edge Technological Innovation
The conference will host a signature program titled "First Launch, First Showcase" to spotlight groundbreaking technologies, products, and solutions. It will showcase top domestic digital application projects and unveil the "Top Ten Benchmark Applications of Beijing's Digital Economy," demonstrating how digital technologies empower urban development and enhance quality of life.
"A range of new technologies and products will be applied and promoted at the conference for the first time," said Liu Weiliang. For instance, the lyrics, music composition, vocals, and video production for the opening ceremony's theme MV will all be generated using AI throughout the process, with a global call for submissions created via AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content). Throughout the event, AI-powered real-time translation featuring voiceprint replication of speakers will be tested. Additionally, seamless access control and smart seating systems will be implemented at the opening ceremony venue, alongside interactive mid-air imaging teleprompters and other innovative technologies and products.
Igniting New Momentum for Industrial Integration and Development
With 46 specialized forums focusing on emerging competitive tracks such as AI integration, digital security, data elements, and digital healthcare, the conference will drive innovation. Events like the Tide-Watching Forum and the Global Open Source Innovation Forum will leverage frontier technology applications to drive industrial breakthroughs and promote deep collaboration through high-level dialogues. A Digital Economy Innovation Competition will also be launched, centered on internationalization, specialization, and industrialization. The competition will highlight promising domestic and international innovation projects, particularly introducing a new category -- the "AIGC Creator Track" -- to advance the application and implementation of AI in traditional artistic settings.
"The newly established 'Digital Economy Industry Experience Zone' at this year's conference will invite diverse participants to engage in professional activities and facilitate the implementation of international cooperation projects," said Zhao Junsheng, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Association of Communication Enterprises.
Upgrading Digital Interaction Experiences
As part of the "Digital Economy Experience Week," the conference will debut a 6,000-square-meter Digital Economy Experience Center, utilizing AIGC and metaverse technologies to create an immersive, interactive space offering engaging digital entertainment experiences. Collaborating with companies specializing in smart wearables, smart home appliances, and digital cultural products, the event will also launch a digital pop-up market -- the "Digital Trend Market" -- where attendees can explore firsthand how the digital economy enriches everyday life through one-stop access.

Vivo Vision Mixed-Reality Headset Steps Up to Apple, but Still a Tough Sell

Look-alikes of Apple products often pop up in China, and mixed-reality headsets have now joined the party. Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has introduced the Vivo Vision, a headset that mixes AR and VR and bears many similarities to the Apple Vision Pro. The company announced the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition at its 30th anniversary celebration in Dongguan, China, saying it's "the first MR product developed by a smartphone manufacturer in China, positioning Vivo as the first Chinese company to operate within both the smartphone and MR product sectors." The Vivo Vision, currently limited to an in-store experience in mainland China, has a curved glass visor, an aluminum external battery pack and downward-pointing cameras like the Vision Pro. But it also has some differences -- an 180-degree panoramic field of view and a much lighter weight at 398 grams (versus the Vision Pro's 650 grams). CNET asked Vivo if it plans to sell the Vivo Vision to non-China markets, but the company did not immediately respond. The Vivo Vision runs on OriginOS Vision, Vivo's mixed-reality operating system. It supports 3D video recording, spatial photos and audio, and a 120-foot cinematic screen experience. The starting cost in China will be relatively cheaper at $1,395 (converted to US dollars), compared to the Vision Pro at $3,500. Even if the Vivo Vision were made available in the US, it might not matter much to Apple's bottom line. The Vision Pro hasn't been a big seller, in large part because of the steep price tag. Still, the headset market is expected to grow quickly over the next several years, and Apple is already working on new versions of the Vision Pro, including one that's more affordable than the original. Jon Rettinger, a tech influencer with more than 1.65 million YouTube subscribers, says he's not overly enthusiastic about VR/AR just yet. "It's heavy, invasive and without a must-have use case," Rettinger told CNET. "If the technology can go from goggles to glasses, I think we'll see a significant rise. But if the current form factors stay, it will always be niche. The YouTuber loves that the technology exists, but still doesn't use it. "The honeymoon wore off. Aside from some gaming and content viewing, it's still cumbersome, and I tend to go back to my laptop," he said. Austin Evans, another tech influencer, says VR/AR headsets are still a somewhat flawed concept. Evans feels lukewarm about the price, lack of content and comfort level, though the Meta Quest takes a superior spot over the Apple Vision Pro. "The Quest is such a better value proposition, and even there it runs into issues with long-term retention and ultimately living in a drawer once the honeymoon period ends," he said.

America's Top 10 Busiest Airports

As someone who practically lives in airports, I can confirm that they are packed. Forget the doom-and-gloom stories you may have heard in the media about people cutting back, or that the U.S. economy is sliding into recession. The foot traffic at America's airports tells a very different story. In fact, the latest data show that U.S. airports are operating at near-record capacity, with the top 10 alone accounting for more than a third of all domestic airline seats this summer. To keep up with demand, billions are being poured into new terminals, gates and runways. Let's take a closer look at the 10 busiest U.S. airports in 2025 and what they reveal about the resilience of the American consumer and traveler. The data comes from OAG Aviation Worldwide. Still the king of the skies, ATL holds the crown as the busiest airport in the U.S.—and the world—by scheduled seats. This summer, airlines are offering more than 38 million seats out of Atlanta, a staggering lead of nearly 7 million over the runner-up. And ATL isn't resting on its laurels. Airport officials are considering issuing nearly $1 billion in bonds—possibly labeled as 'green' bonds—to upgrade infrastructure and keep pace with growth. O'Hare has been on a tear, climbing back to pre-pandemic levels of operations. FAA data show that in 2024, ORD saw a 5.7% increase in flights compared to the previous year. In July 2025, O'Hare set an all-time record for daily Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screenings: 115,962 passengers on July 20. That was part of the busiest month ever for U.S. air travel, when TSA agents screened 85 million passengers. Chicago is also investing in the future. Work is underway on a $730 million Concourse D expansion, part of a $1.3 billion project that will add 19 gates by 2028. Everything's bigger in Texas, including air travel. DFW is now firmly in the #3 spot with 30.7 million scheduled seats this summer. Operations surged 8.2% year-over-year in 2024, outpacing many peers. And with population growth in Texas among the strongest in the nation, that demand isn't slowing down. DFW is rolling out a massive $9 billion 'DFW Forward' expansion plan, including new terminals, roadway upgrades and airfield improvements. The airport also recently won Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards from Airports Council International (ACI) for the third year running in the 40M+ passenger category. Denver is one of the most remarkable airport stories in America. Built on a 53-square-mile campus, DEN has more room to grow than any other airport in the U.S. It already hosts nearly 30 million scheduled seats this summer, placing it fourth overall. The airport is accelerating commercial land development and has the potential to scale up to 12 runways and 100+ million passengers annually. LAX is still the top West Coast gateway, with 27.1 million seats this summer. International traffic, particularly from Asia, is rebounding strongly. As many of you know, Los Angeles is gearing up for the 2028 Olympics with a massive facelift. In February, the City Council approved $5 billion in contracts, part of a broader $30 billion overhaul, to modernize the airport. The projects include rebuilding Terminal 5, upgrading Tom Bradley International Terminal and improving the notoriously congested horseshoe loop. JFK is booming again, handling 23.6 million seats this summer. International long-haul flights, especially across the Atlantic, are driving growth. The airport is undergoing a historic $19 billion redevelopment program. The crown jewel is the new Terminal 6, a public-private partnership with JetBlue and Vantage, featuring world-class design and even an arts program. The first gates are expected in 2026, with full completion in 2028. Las Vegas continues to shine as a leisure travel powerhouse. With 20.3 million scheduled seats this summer, LAS is the seventh-busiest airport in the U.S. That said, the latest numbers show a rare pullback. In June, the airport served 4.7 million passengers, down 6.3% from the same month a year earlier. Year-to-date traffic is off 4.1%, mirroring a broader slowdown in Las Vegas tourism. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported 3.1 million visitors in June, an 11.3% drop from last year, while hotel occupancy fell 6.5%. Charlotte may fly under the radar, but with 20 million seats this summer, it's a critical hub for American Airlines. This year marks major milestones. The Terminal Lobby Expansion—adding 175,000 square feet—finishes in the fall, and work is underway on a $1 billion Fourth Parallel Runway scheduled to open in 2027. To fund it all, CLT sold $291 million in revenue bonds this spring, while earning recognition as North America's most financially efficient airport for the third straight year. San Francisco rounds out the top 10 with nearly 19.6 million seats this summer. As the Bay Area recovers from pandemic-related slowdowns, SFO remains a vital hub for transpacific and tech-driven business travel. The airport is in the middle of a $2.6 billion Terminal 3 West Modernization, adding 200,000 square feet and new concessions while retrofitting for seismic safety, with completion set for 2027. Meanwhile, United Airlines is boosting its presence by 20% in 2025, offering 300 daily flights, its largest schedule from San Francisco since 2019. Tied with SFO at 19.6 million seats, SEA has become a major West Coast hub, anchored by Alaska and Delta's strong operations. The airport is undergoing a $5 billion upgrade program, timed for the 2026 World Cup, which Seattle will help host. Recognized with a 4-Star Skytrax Rating and 'Best Airport in North America' three years running, SEA is also advancing its Sustainable Airport Master Plan, the largest expansion in its history, which aims to boost flight capacity by a third over the next decade. People are traveling in record numbers, and airports are straining to keep up. The investment response is a bullish signal not only for air travel, but for the U.S. economy overall. So the next time you hear someone say that consumers are pulling back or that travel is slowing, just point them to the lines at TSA, the packed gate areas and the billion-dollar construction cranes looming over America's busiest airports. As someone who's walked those concourses countless times, I can tell you firsthand that America is on the move. Wheels up!
