Richland man sentenced for killing wife while speeding to pass a truck
A Richland man is headed to prison nearly four years after killing his wife in a dramatic south Richland wreck. Investigators believe Melvin D. Williams Jr., 65, was speeding up a hill on Leslie Road trying to get ahead of a merging truck when he lost control of the Saturn he was driving in June 2021. The car spun into the oncoming lane and crashed, killing his wife Victoria Deberry, 61. He was charged with vehicular homicide seven weeks after the crash and a lengthy hospital stay. On Tuesday, Williams entered an Alford plea to the charge. The plea means he doesn't admit to the crime, but believed the prosecutors could prove the charge if it went to trial. Williams faced between a year and three months and a year and eight months in prison.. Both sides agreed to a maximum sentence, and Judge Norma Rodriguez followed the recommendation. Deberry's family also asked for the judge to impose the maximum sentence, according to statements read into the record. William's attorney Deric Orr said his client took responsibility for his role, but the other driver remained free. 'Ultimately, while we firmly believe that (the other driver's) actions did contribute to Ms. Deberry's death, the prosecutor maintains the sole ability to charge someone with a crime. We are happy that Mr. Williams was able to put this behind him,' Orr told the Tri-City Herald. Williams told investigators that he was heading south on Leslie Road from Columbia Park Trail when he first tried to pass a Ford pickup. The two-lane section of Leslie Road goes uphill before narrowing from two lanes to one. Vehicles in the right lane have the right of way, while drivers in the left were instructed to 'merge right' with painted arrows on the road and signs. The pickup moved into the left lane in front of his Saturn and Williams moved into the right, he told investigators. The data recorder in the car showed he was going 76 mph with the gas pedal pushed nearly to the floor when the Saturn struck the right curb, court documents said. The posted speed limit was 40 mph. When he lost control, the car slid sideways in front of the truck. It kept skidding across the road and into oncoming traffic. It slammed into an SUV heading north. Deberry was killed in the crash and Williams was left in the hospital for weeks

Women arrested for drug driving after serious crash
Two women have been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a crash between two cars which left an 18-year-old critically injured. The teenager was driving a black Citroen C1 when it was in collision with a grey BMW near Halifax just after 20:00 BST on Friday. West Yorkshire Police said the BMW had been travelling on Hopwood Lane towards Queens Road when it collided with the Citroen, which was coming out of the lane from Gibraltar Road. Three passengers from the Citroen were also taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Police said the BMW left the left the road after the collision and crashed into the front of a shop. The women who were in the BMW, both aged 25, were treated in hospital and have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. They remain in custody and enquiries into the incident are ongoing, police said. Anyone who witnessed the collision or the circumstances leading up to it, particularly anyone with relevant dashcam footage, is asked to contact the roads policing unit. Hamilton man with history of gun crimes, including being shot twice, faces charges
A 26-year-old Hamilton man — who has survived being shot twice and was also twice convicted in connection with shootings — is facing new gun and drug charges. Hamilton police major drugs and gangs unit searched a residence and vehicle in Hamilton's east end on Thursday, police said. Detectives seized a loaded Glock 22 handgun, 26 rounds of ammunition, about 35 grams of suspected fentanyl, along with codeine and hydromorphone pills, C$1,740 and US$170. Donavan Hines , 26, and a 24-year-old woman were arrested and jointly charged with firearm, drug and proceeds of crime offences. Hines faces four further charges of possession contrary to an order, because he is already prohibited by the courts for life from possessing weapons. The Spectator has previously reported on Hines, who was shot in a gunfight during broad daylight on July 28, 2021 that left him with paralysis. He was still in a wheelchair in August 2023 when he was convicted in that shooting. Hines also survived being shot at in a drive-by shooting at Mohawk Road East, east of Upper James Street, in October 2020. And was convicted of robbery in another, earlier shooting. In the brazen July 2021 shooting Hines was shot eight times by a masked gunman around 5:10 p.m. A then 23-year-old Hines was shot while sitting in a black BMW parked behind a restaurant on Oak Avenue at Barton Street East. Video showed Hines indiscriminately firing retaliatory shots, despite people being out on the street and sitting on nearby porches. 'Quite frankly we're just lucky nobody died to as a result of this,' Ontario Court Justice Michael Wendl said while sentencing Hines to four years. Donavan Hines, in a photo from a 2018 Hamilton police release, is facing new gun and drug charges. Hines pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and breaching a weapons prohibition order in that case. After credit for pretrial custody he had about 11 months left on his sentence, which would have concluded last summer. Hines also pleaded guilty to robbery in another shooting in March 2018 at Emerald Street North at Barton Street East. In that case a 20-year-old, who Hines new from high school, was shot in the neck during an attempted robbery. 'The Hamilton Police Service remains committed to removing illegal firearms and dangerous drugs from our streets,' police said in a release about the latest gun and drug charges.
