Belize to send Lev Tahor Jewish sect leader, 2 others to Guatemala
Avraham Dinkel, a Canadian citizen who has acted as spokesman for Lev Tahor, was among the group detained at the Belize-Guatemala border on Monday, according to Belizean authorities.
Founded in 1988, Lev Tahor ("Pure Heart" in Hebrew) has faced multiple allegations of kidnapping, child marriage and physical abuse. The community has frequently moved, often fleeing child welfare agencies.
Belize's head of immigration, Tanya Santos, told Reuters that Dinkel and Chaim Malka - whom Belizean media identified as a member of Lev Tahor - had aided another member, Moshe Yhida Alter, in attempting to enter the country with a falsified document. The three have been convicted and fined.
Police also released a photo of Alter's falsified identification.
Reuters was not immediately able to reach the three men or a lawyer representing them, though Lev Tahor has always denied allegations of abuse.
'Our only crime is being Jewish,' the organization said in a post on X this month.
In December, Guatemalan authorities rescued 160 children from a compound run by Lev Tahor in southeastern Guatemala after receiving allegations of child abuse, including rape.
Belizean officials are coordinating with their Guatemalan counterparts to send the men back, according to police commissioner Chester Williams.
Malka and Alter are U.S. citizens. It was not immediately clear what their legal status in Guatemala was, and Guatemala's interior ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Lev Tahor has come under fire in several Latin American countries in recent years, with one raid in southern Mexico in 2022 coming to a head after around 20 members escaped detention.
On Sunday, El Salvador received a request from Israel's government to extradite another Lev Tahor member on charges of abusing two minors.

Russian drone fell in eastern Poland, Warsaw says
OSINY, Poland, Aug 20 (Reuters) - A Russian drone crashed in a field in eastern Poland, according to early findings, Polish officials said on Wednesday, in an incident the nation's defence minister described as a provocation. The drone hit and scorched a cornfield in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province overnight, just over 100 km (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border and around 90 km from Belarus. Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people. We are dealing with it in a crucial moment, when discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are underway," he told journalists. China to show off troops, high-tech weapons at massive WW2 parade
BEIJING, Aug 20 (Reuters) - China will stage a massive military parade next month in Beijing to commemorate 80 years since the end of World War Two following Japan's surrender, mobilising tens of thousands of people and showcasing weapons never seen before. Hundreds of aircraft including fighter jets and bombers as well as high-tech armaments such as precision-strike weapons capable of travelling at five times the speed of sound will be featured, officials said at a press conference on Wednesday. The parade, the second such procession since 2015 to observe the formal surrender of Japanese forces in September 1945, will be a show of China's military strength as some of its neighbours and Western nations look on with concern over the projection of power by the People's Liberation Army in recent years. From trucks fitted with devices to take out drones, new tanks and early-warning aircraft to protect China's aircraft carriers, military attaches and security analysts say they are anticipating a host of new weapons and equipment. Additions to its expanding suite of missiles, particularly anti-ship versions and weapons with hypersonic capabilities, will be particularly scrutinised as the U.S. and its allies prepare to counter China in any future regional conflict.
