Belize to send Lev Tahor Jewish sect leader, 2 others to Guatemala

Reuters26-02-2025
BELIZE CITY, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Belize on Tuesday said it was sending three men, including a leader of the Jewish sect Lev Tahor, back to Guatemala after arresting them at the Central American countries' shared border.
Avraham Dinkel, a Canadian citizen who has acted as spokesman for Lev Tahor, was among the group detained at the Belize-Guatemala border on Monday, according to Belizean authorities.
Founded in 1988, Lev Tahor ("Pure Heart" in Hebrew) has faced multiple allegations of kidnapping, child marriage and physical abuse. The community has frequently moved, often fleeing child welfare agencies.
Belize's head of immigration, Tanya Santos, told Reuters that Dinkel and Chaim Malka - whom Belizean media identified as a member of Lev Tahor - had aided another member, Moshe Yhida Alter, in attempting to enter the country with a falsified document. The three have been convicted and fined.
Police also released a photo of Alter's falsified identification.
Reuters was not immediately able to reach the three men or a lawyer representing them, though Lev Tahor has always denied allegations of abuse.
'Our only crime is being Jewish,' the organization said in a post on X this month.
In December, Guatemalan authorities rescued 160 children from a compound run by Lev Tahor in southeastern Guatemala after receiving allegations of child abuse, including rape.
Belizean officials are coordinating with their Guatemalan counterparts to send the men back, according to police commissioner Chester Williams.
Malka and Alter are U.S. citizens. It was not immediately clear what their legal status in Guatemala was, and Guatemala's interior ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Lev Tahor has come under fire in several Latin American countries in recent years, with one raid in southern Mexico in 2022 coming to a head after around 20 members escaped detention.
On Sunday, El Salvador received a request from Israel's government to extradite another Lev Tahor member on charges of abusing two minors.

Russian drone fell in eastern Poland, Warsaw says

OSINY, Poland, Aug 20 (Reuters) - A Russian drone crashed in a field in eastern Poland, according to early findings, Polish officials said on Wednesday, in an incident the nation's defence minister described as a provocation. The drone hit and scorched a cornfield in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province overnight, just over 100 km (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border and around 90 km from Belarus. Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pawel Wronski told Reuters that the findings so far and some experts have suggested a Russian version of the Shahed drone developed by Iran was involved in the latest incident. General Dariusz Malinowski said the drone appeared to be a decoy which was designed to self-destruct. He said it had a Chinese engine. Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as defence minister, said the incident bore similarities to cases in which Russian drones flew into Lithuania and Romania, and could be linked to efforts to end the war in Ukraine. "Once again, we are dealing with a provocation by the Russian Federation, with a Russian drone. We are dealing with it in a crucial moment, when discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are underway," he told journalists. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on X his ministry would issue a protest against the airspace violation but did not name the perpetrator. "Another violation of our airspace from the East confirms that Poland's most important mission towards NATO is the defence of our own territory." The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. U.S. President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a group of European allies in the White House on Monday, following his meeting on Friday in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, national news agency PAP reported. Police said they found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site and that corn had been burnt in an area of 8-10 m (26-33 ft) diameter around the spot where the object fell. "I was sitting in my room at night, around midnight, maybe, and I heard something just bang," local resident Pawel Sudowski told local news website "It exploded so loudly that the whole house simply shook." Air raid sirens rang out for about an hour over the border in Ukraine's Volyn and Lviv regions from around midnight local time (2100 GMT), according to messages from its military posted on Telegram. There were no reports of air attacks in those regions, their governors said.

China to show off troops, high-tech weapons at massive WW2 parade

BEIJING, Aug 20 (Reuters) - China will stage a massive military parade next month in Beijing to commemorate 80 years since the end of World War Two following Japan's surrender, mobilising tens of thousands of people and showcasing weapons never seen before. Hundreds of aircraft including fighter jets and bombers as well as high-tech armaments such as precision-strike weapons capable of travelling at five times the speed of sound will be featured, officials said at a press conference on Wednesday. The parade, the second such procession since 2015 to observe the formal surrender of Japanese forces in September 1945, will be a show of China's military strength as some of its neighbours and Western nations look on with concern over the projection of power by the People's Liberation Army in recent years. From trucks fitted with devices to take out drones, new tanks and early-warning aircraft to protect China's aircraft carriers, military attaches and security analysts say they are anticipating a host of new weapons and equipment. Additions to its expanding suite of missiles, particularly anti-ship versions and weapons with hypersonic capabilities, will be particularly scrutinised as the U.S. and its allies prepare to counter China in any future regional conflict. "(The weapons and equipment) will fully demonstrate our military's robust ability to adapt to technological advancements, evolving warfare patterns, and win future wars," said Wu Zeke, deputy director of the military parade. New armaments due to debut at the parade will account for a significant share of those on display, according to the military officials. The exact number of troops, weapons and equipment to be shown was not disclosed. Hundreds of troops were seen practicing manoeuvres in formation at a military camp in a northwestern suburb of Beijing during a visit by Reuters on Wednesday. Groups of honour guards, both men and women, and in rows of 15 or 20, spread out along a runway-like track as officers shouted out commands. The roughly 70-minute, "Victory Day" parade on September 3, comprising 45 formations of troops, will be surveyed by President Xi Jinping at Tiananmen Square alongside a number of foreign leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also attended the 2015 parade. At the last World War Two parade, more than 12,000 soldiers, including diverse contingents ranging from Russia and Belarus to Mongolia and Cambodia, marched through the Chinese capital alongside veterans, including a handful from Taiwan who fought for the Republic of China's military. Many Western leaders shunned the 2015 event, wary of the message China would send with its exhibition of military might. Then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declined to attend. Foreign attendees at the time included former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former British prime minister Tony Blair. Authorities have stepped up security in downtown Beijing since the first rehearsals this month, setting up checkpoints, diverting traffic and shutting malls and office buildings. Beijing has so far conducted two large-scale rehearsals on the weekends of August 9-10 and 16-17, attended by 22,000 and 40,000 people involving troops, police and spectators. Among participants in Wednesday's practice manoeuvres in suburban Beijing was Staff Sergeant Lan Yu, 28, who was deployed to South Sudan in 2019 as part of a U.N. peacekeeping mission. "This year marks my 11th year in the military, and it's my first time representing the peacekeeping force in a parade," Lan said. He said China had always been a peace-loving nation, when asked about concerns overseas about China's growing military.

Early findings show military drone fell in Poland, prosecutor says

OSINY, Poland, Aug 20 (Reuters) - An object that hit and scorched a corn field in eastern Poland was a military drone, according to the preliminary findings of an investigation, a Polish prosecutor said on Wednesday. Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck the southern Polish village of Przewodow in 2022, killing two people. "Examination of the explosion indicates that the ... object is most likely a military drone," Lublin regional prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz told reporters. He said it was probably damaged by explosives. Police had earlier announced that an unidentified object had fallen in a field in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province, just over 100 km (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border and around 90 km from Belarus. State news agency PAP cited a person close to the defence ministry as saying that the drone had no warhead, contained only a small amount of explosives, and was most likely a decoy. Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, who serves as defence minister, said the incident bore similarities to cases in which Russian drones flew into Lithuania and Romania, and that there could be a link to efforts to end the war in Ukraine. "In this analysis we should not rule out a connection between the ongoing peace talks in the United States, inspired by President Trump, and the provocative actions of the Russian Federation," he said. The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. U.S. President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a group of European allies in the White House on Monday, following his meeting on Friday in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, PAP reported.
