Mavericks GM Harrison defends Dončić trade

Axios21-04-2025

Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison doubled down on his belief that "defense wins championships" in an end-of-season news conference Monday.
Why it matters: Harrison said that he knew former Mav Luka Dončić "was important to the fan base" but "didn't quite know to what level" before trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.
Fans have railed against Harrison since the trade, regularly chanting, "Fire Nico," at games.
Driving the news: The news conference comes less than a week after a closed doors roundtable with reporters and Harrison. No cameras or recordings were allowed, which didn't play well for Harrison among fans and on social media.
The intrigue: Hours before the planned news conference, ESPN published a report detailing what it described as dysfunction and discord in the Mavs front office.
The story recounts the firing of health and performance director Casey Smith, who Dirk Nowitzki credits with extending the basketball great's career to 21 seasons.
Employees told ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon that Smith was fired for being "too negative." Harrison is known for preferring a positive spin.
Between the lines: The Mavs were plagued with injuries before and after Dončić was traded. Davis was hurt in his first game, Kyrie Irving suffered a season-ending ACL injury, and Dereck Lively II missed months with a stress fracture.
Harrison said the fan anger stemmed from not seeing the winning team he envisioned.
"If we would've put the team that we intended to put on the floor, I think that would've quieted some of the outrage," Harrison said.

Stephen A. Smith Had Words for Caitlin Clark 'Resentment' in the WNBA

Stephen A. Smith Had Words for Caitlin Clark 'Resentment' in the WNBA originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Stephen A. Smith isn't mincing words when it comes to Caitlin Clark's treatment in the WNBA. Advertisement The longtime ESPN analyst joined the "PBD Podcast" this week and didn't just offer sympathy — he offered a stark explanation for what's really happening. According to Smith, the controversy around Clark isn't just about her rough treatment in the league. It's about something deeper: resentment. 'There's resentment. It's not just about her play. It's what she represents,' Smith said bluntly. 'That's the reality. It's undeniable.' He likened Clark's current reception to what generational athletes before her endured — from Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson to Kobe Bryant and Larry Bird. But Smith argued that Clark's case carries extra tension because of the layers involved. She's not only a sophomore with superstar hype — she's also someone drawing massive media attention and money to a league still growing. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark reacts to a call in the second half against the Washington Mystics at Entertainment & Sports Faith Morgan-Imagn Images And according to Smith, not everyone is happy about that. Advertisement 'There's a few who actually resent her popularity so much, they would rather not benefit from it,' he added. 'That's how deep it goes.' His words come at a time when debate around Clark's presence in the league has reached a boiling point. From hard fouls and viral highlight clips to ongoing chatter about jealousy and marketability, the Fever rookie has stayed at the center of headlines even while missing time due to a quad injury. But while many voices in the sports world have danced around the topic, Smith took the gloves off — making it clear that the pushback Clark's facing isn't just physical. Advertisement It's personal. Arizona Cardinals could re-sign 2 players if competition at their positions isn't great

Arizona Cardinals could re-sign 2 players if competition at their positions isn't great Will Hernandez and Kyzir White remain unsigned this offseason. The Arizona Cardinals appear to have completed the offseason moves they intend to make for the roster. They added many defensive players, improving the defensive front seven. They still have questions at a couple of positions currently, though. Right guard and inside linebacker appear to have wide-open competitions. But if no one stands out, the Cardinals could bring back a familiar faces. Who are the two unsigned free agents the Cardinals could bring back? OL Will Hernandez Hernandez is coming off a torn ACL so he might not be healthy yet, but if the Cardinals discover that Isaiah Adams, Royce Adams and others are not standing out enough to be the starter, you might see the Cardinals re-sign him close to training camp. And his return seems possible, as the Cardinals did not assign No. 76, his number for the last several seasons, to any other player. LB Zyzir White 'White remains unsigned. The Cardinals signed Akeem Davis-Gaither in free agency and drafted Cody Simon in the fourth round. Davis-Gaither has only started 11 games in his career and Simon is a Day 3 rookie. White's No. 7 now belongs to backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett but perhaps would be an option if neither Davis-Gaither nor Simon show enough to start.
