No. 2 Penn State primed to make run at first Big Ten title since 2016; Ohio St, Oregon in hunt again
While defending national champion Ohio State, defending Big Ten champ Oregon and heavyweight Michigan are breaking in new quarterbacks, Penn State goes into the season with a three-year starter in Drew Allar, a pair of 1,000-yard rushers and a top-10 defense with first-year coordinator Jim Knowles.
'I think when you look at all of our personnel, not just the players, but the staff and players, it's the best combination that we've had in my 12 years here,' coach James Franklin said. 'The depth, the experience, the talent is impressive.'
The Nittany Lions have won at least 10 games three straight years, and last season they made the College Football Playoff for the first time and beat overmatched opponents SMU and Boise State before a 27-24 loss to Notre Dame in the semifinal at the Orange Bowl.
The knock against Franklin and the Lions is that they win the games they are supposed to but not the ones when the lights are the brightest.
'We were a drive away from playing for the national championship last year, and 99% of the programs in the country would be jacked about that season and how it went, and I don't know if that was necessarily the case here, right?' Franklin said.
Except for a Sept. 27 home game against No. 7 Oregon, the Nittany Lions probably won't be tested until the back end of their schedule. They'll be trying for their first conference championship since 2016 and the automatic CFP bid that goes with it.
If not Penn State, who?
No. 3 Ohio State and No. 7 Oregon are poised to return to the playoff if their new quarterbacks keep the offenses on the rails.
Buckeyes coach Ryan Day is still deciding between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz. Ohio State is going for its first Big Ten title since 2020 along with a repeat national championship. With so many elite players spread across the field, both are possible.
Former UCLA five-star QB Dante Moore takes over for Dillon Gabriel at Oregon, which went 13-0 with a win over Penn State in the conference championship game to earn the CFP top seed before losing to Ohio State in the quarterfinals. Much is expected of Dakorien Moore, the top-rated receiver in the 2025 recruiting class.
No. 14 Michigan landed the nation's No. 1 recruit in quarterback Bryce Underwood. The Wolverines didn't win the Big Ten last year, but they did beat Ohio State a fourth straight time. Underwood and a new group of receivers should improve the Big Ten's worst passing game.
Team on the rise
There's chatter about No. 12 Illinois being a CFP contender. It's not crazy talk. The Illini bring back QB Luke Altmyer and 15 other starters from their 10-win team, and the schedule is manageable. The Illini last season knocked off a program record-tying four Top 25 opponents, and their six Big Ten wins were their most since 2007.

No. 20 Indiana was the nation's surprise team last season. Can Curt Cignetti keep it going? Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza, who threw for over 3,000 yards, is the new QB. … Iowa's hopes ride the arm of Mark Gronowski, who put up monster numbers at South Dakota State and could have just as easily entered the NFL draft. … Minnesota needs to get its offense going. Four of the Gophers' five losses a year ago were one-score games. … Rutgers went to the portal to improve a defense that tied for second-most touchdowns allowed in the Big Ten.
Jayden Maiava enters his first full season as starting QB for Southern California, whose five one-score losses tied for the most in the FBS. … Washington's defense will be coordinated by Ryan Walters, an ace DC at Illinois before a failed run as Purdue's head coach. … Michigan State needs more from QB Aidan Chiles, who has yet to find his rhythm. … Matt Rhule's teams at Temple and Baylor made big jumps in Year 3. The same should happen at Nebraska with QB Dylan Raiola back and a manageable schedule.
UCLA can build on a strong finish with Tennessee transfer QB Nico Iamaleava. … Wisconsin, in its first eight games, faces three top-10 opponents and another in the top 15. … SMU transfer QB Preston Stone is next in line to spark a Northwestern offense that has struggled for going on seven years. … Freshman QB Malik Washington is a bright spot for a Maryland team that incurred huge losses in the portal. … Barry Odom takes over a Purdue team whose only win was against FCS member Indiana State.

Experience from that run is part of why the Tigers are the runaway preseason pick to finish atop the ACC again. 'Experience, as they say, doesn't come at a discount,' coach Dabo Swinney said. Clemson won at least 10 games from 2011-2022, including two national championships and eight ACC titles, before a nine-win year in 2023. The Tigers (10-4) beat SMU for last year's title. 'I think our mentality is, man, we're keeping our head down, just kind of keeping it low,' said quarterback Cade Klubnik, the preseason ACC player of the year. Clemson returns four Associated Press All-ACC picks from last year, including first-team offensive lineman Blake Miller and two defensive linemen (Peter Woods and T.J. Parker) ranked in the top three among returners at their position nationally by Pro Football Focus. Overall, Clemson held 11 of 27 spots on the preseason all-ACC team. No other team held more than three. If not Clemson, then who? The ACC has two other teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 with No. 10 Miami and No. 16 SMU. The Hurricanes were the league's highest-ranked team much of last year, though they missed the ACC title game after losing at Syracuse. They brought in Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck as the successor to No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Cam Ward. The Mustangs have back-to-back 11-win seasons under Rhett Lashlee, who led SMU to an 8-0 record in its first league season. SMU returns quarterback Kevin Jennings (28 total touchdowns last year), and AP all-ACC picks in offensive lineman Logan Parr, safety Isaiah Nwokobia and kicker Collin Rogers. Seminoles' response Florida State entered last season as the reigning ACC champion and preseason favorite, then went 2-10. Coach Mike Norvell's offseason included hiring two coordinators, notably former Auburn and UCF head coach Gus Malzahn for the offense. 'When you come to Florida State, you'd better embrace the highest of expectations, because it's what I have, it's what our program has,' Norvell said. New faces Three new coaches arrive in North Carolina's Bill Belichick, Wake Forest's Jake Dickert and Stanford's Frank Reich. Belichick led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles but this is his first college season, while the school is betting on the 73-year-old to elevate its football profile after moving on from Mack Brown. Dickert left Washington State for Wake Forest after Dave Clawson unexpectedly stepped down after the season. Reich, who joins Belichick and Boston College's Bill O'Brien as the ACC's national-high three former NFL head coaches, is an interim coach after the spring firing of Troy Taylor due to off-field concerns. Irish factor Sixth-ranked Notre Dame has six games against ACC teams as part of its annual scheduling partnership with the league, with the football independent being a member of all other ACC sports. Those don't count in the league standings but certainly have CFP implications for last year's national runner-up. The biggest comes with an opening-game trip to Miami (Aug. 31), along with trips to Boston College (Nov. 1), Pittsburgh (Nov. 15) and Stanford (Nov. 29). The Irish's home games come against N.C. State (Oct. 11) and Syracuse (Nov. 22). Heading west Boston College, Duke, FSU, UNC, Pittsburgh and Virginia are this year's teams to touch all four U.S. continental time zones for a league road trip in Year 2 of westward expansion. California hosts the Blue Devils (Oct. 4), Tar Heels (Oct. 17) and Cavaliers (Nov. 1). Stanford hosts the Eagles (Sept. 13), Seminoles (Oct. 18) and Panthers (Nov. 1). That would leave Clemson and Georgia Tech as the only ACC teams yet to travel to California. Both go next year, the Tigers to Cal and the Yellow Jackets to Stanford. Marquee matchups The league gets immediate measuring-stick matchups. Week 1 features LSU visiting Clemson, Alabama visiting Florida State, TCU visiting UNC and Georgia Tech visiting Colorado. There are also Atlanta games with Syracuse meeting Tennessee and Virginia Tech facing South Carolina. Key conference games include Clemson visiting Georgia Tech (Sept. 13), hosting SMU (Oct. 18) and traveling to Louisville (Nov. 14). No. 3 Ohio State still doing some shuffling along the offensive line ahead of opener vs. No. 1 Texas
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State coach Ryan Day says there's still some shuffling along the Buckeyes' offensive line ahead of their Aug. 30 season-opener. Some of that the coaches credited to a new emphasis this preseason: players learning primary and secondary positions. But as the third-ranked Buckeyes get closer to their matchup with top-ranked Texas, Day is hoping to lock in his frontline sooner rather than later. 'It's important as we get closer to this first game for guys to really dig in and get the majority of the snaps at where they're going to play,' Day said this week. Austin Siereveld, a third-year sophomore who entered preseason as the presumed starter at right tackle, has been working at left tackle over the past week. That's because Phillip Daniels, who transferred in January after two years at Minnesota, is in the running to start on the right side. Rice transfer Ethan Onianwa is the potential backup at either spot. He is also getting a look at guard, where Tegra Tshabola and Luke Montgomery finished last season as starters flanking Carson Hinzman at center. 'We'll see,' Day said. 'By the end of this week, we'll have more and more snaps, more and more information, and go from there.' Onianwa started 25 games at right tackle and nine at left tackle for Rice. 'I feel like it's kind of important for all the O-linemen to have experience in these positions because you never know how the season's going to progress, and that's just been kind of like the plan,' Onianwa said Tuesday. 'I've been playing guard, I've been playing tackle on both sides, and it's just a learning experience, and I'm enjoying every second of it.' Daniels redshirted in 2023 and played in 12 games last season for the Golden Gophers. If outsiders were surprised at his ascension, he indicated he is not. 'I know the plays now, so everything's just clicking,' Daniels said. 'Once I know the plays, I feel like I can kill anybody.' Offensive line coach Tyler Bowen, who is in his first season in Columbus after spending three at Virginia Tech, downplayed the significance of the movement to a certain degree, but he confirmed the staff is putting an emphasis on learning multiple positions. 'It's something we believe in, and that's a good example of it,' Bowen said of Siereveld's moving around. 'He's bounced to tackle. He's played guard. I think what you see up front, we do that a lot. Nothing's set in stone. We have a lot of versatility. We have some depth, but we've got to be able to perform at a high level on the spot we settle into, and that's what we've got to figure out this week. And we've got to figure it out fast.'
