FAI Cup preview: Big sides set for early FAI Cup exit ahead of quarter-finals

RTÉ News2 days ago
After all the excitement of the midweek European action, the focus turns to the FAI Cup last 16 with eight games taking place tonight, and over the weekend.
And yet, there remains a continental theme to tonight's game as the competition offers a viable route into Europe, especially with the league proving so competitive once again this season.
Four wins is all it will take for one of the remaining sides to secure that coveted place, and some big teams are set to tumble this weekend with eight top-flight sides drawn against each other, while at least two First Division teams will be in the draw for the quarter-finals.
Two of those all-Premier Division ties take place this evening with Sligo Rovers and Bohemians going head-to-head, while Cork City take the short hop east to face neighbours Waterford.
Contrasting seasons in the league for the Sligo and Bohs with the two teams sitting second from bottom and second from top respectively, however, the three games between the two sides have been competitive.
Sligo have only taken one point from Bohs but they will bring a strong element of confidence into this one despite coming into the game off back-to-back defeats.
John Russell's side looked to be really improving last month and will welcome the distraction of the cup to start to build momentum for a vital league run in.
And the manager also sees a great opportunity for the side to remain in the competition going into the business end of the season.
"It's a massive opportunity for both sides", said Russell. "You have four top-flight teams that are guaranteed to be knocked out this weekend and if you can make it through, with a bit of luck you might find yourself with a decent draw in a quarter-final.
"We are yet to beat Bohs this season but all three games between us have been extremely tight. I expect Friday will be just as competitive.
"We're looking for a more settled performance. We know we have more than enough in us to get through and of course Bohs will be very strong at home.
"I don't like the old cliches and that anything can happen. You need to be properly prepared and you need to make happen, what you want to happen.
"I have huge belief in this group and this a big opportunity for them. It's not a secret around Sligo that we would dearly love to go far in this competition this year."
Jad Hakiki is Sligo's only injury concern, struggling with a hamstring injury, while defender Paddy McClean is available after his recent red card was rescinded.
Cork City are another Premier Division side that will welcome the change of scene as they go on the road to the RSC to face Waterford.
The relegation-threatened Turner's Cross outfit, like Sligo, have looked a lot stronger in recent weeks, and while league survival remains the main objective, they will also look to take confidence into tonight's game.
Waterford will be buoyed by a recent victory over their Munster rivals, however, they have proved inconsistent this season and are unlikely to challenge for a top-three place in the league.
The cup looks like their best route to success this season with defeat potentially making for a long, laborious, and fruitless, end to the campaign.
Galway United are one of the two Premier Division sides to be handed lower league opponents, however, it should be a lively affair at Eamonn Deacy Park as a derby game awaits against one-time league side Salthill Devon.
The Galway outfit, who currently ply their trade in the Galway & District League, have given up home advantage to take the tie to Terryland – they have won their respective title for the past four years.
United showed promise early on in the league, however, they are in danger of getting dragged into a relegation battle, and anything other than a comfortable victory tonight could further damage confidence ahead of the run-in.
The other two ties tonight sees four second-tier sides going head-to-head for attractive quarter-final action later in the competition.
Bray Wanderers will be making the 530km round journey to Finn Park for the second time in 12 days to face Finn Harps, and are boosted by the news that defender Harvey Warren, midfielder Jamie Ryan and on-loan winger Matthew Britton have all resumed first-team training. But midfielder Sean Brennan and striker Danú Kinsella Bishop are both doubts.
"It should be an exciting Cup tie with both sides fancying their chances to progress to a Quarter Final" said coach Paul Heffernan.
"We know all about what Finn Harps are going to bring to the game. But we are more focused on ourselves, and we need to make sure we perform to our level."
Cobh Ramblers' season is still very much alive as they look to rein in Dundalk at the top of the First Division, and it could get even better by securing a quarter-final berth.
However, they face a much-improved Kerry side and it should be a competitive affair as the Mounthawk Park outfit will have a real go as they look to make it through to the last eight for the first time in their history.
Kerry knocked Cobh out of the cup last season away from home and will be looking to repeat the feat on their home turf tonight.
Colin Healy's side will be without Sean McGrath, Ryan Kelliher and Nathan Gleeson through injury, while Daniel Okwute is suspended, and Ewan Lee is cup-tied, having played for UCC in the first round. Tim-Oliver Hiemer is nearer to a return after a broken finger, and Luke Palmer has returned to training after an ankle injury.
"I'm sure there will be a buzz in Mounthawk Park," said Healy. "The fans will be in full voice, and we are all looking forward to it.
"It's a special cup. You have a chance to go to the Aviva, which is amazing. The players are looking forward to it, I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully it will be a good night for everybody."
There is one game up for decision on Saturday as Derry City host Drogheda United at the Ryan McBride Brandywell.
One of the cup favourites will bow out at the holders take on the Premier Division's third-placed team, and another will follow on Sunday as outgoing league champions Shelbourne face off in a Dublin derby against St Patrick's Athletic.
Shamrock Rovers Longford on Sunday evening.

Athlone edge Peamount United to achieve FAI Cup semi-final spot

FAI Cup drama continued as Athlone Town overcame a spirited Peamount United to put themselves in the hat for the semi-final thanks to a goal of the season contender from Aoife O'Connor. In a tense opening, played at a frightening pace it was the hosts, whose performances of late haven't reflected their results, that started confidently. Irish under-19 international Jess Fitzgerald was influential in the middle of the park, beginning a number of intricate moves to keep her team high up by playing the early exchanges in the opposition half. Having weathered the early pressure the visitors, who have had the glamorous distraction of two historic Champions League wins recently, began to grow into the game as their fantastic front three got more involved. Although the Town have been overtaken by Shelbourne at the top of the league, they showed why they are Champions coming from behind at the in-form team in the country in Bohemians to rescue a draw at Dalymount Park but the point came at a cost losing the influential Izzy Groves in the middle of the park. But to counter the busy workload having bolstered the squad in recent weeks with Katharina "Kat" Oelschlaeger and Alexis Stickland with the latter establishing herself in the starting 11 with some impressive displays in the engine room as her side went close to opening the scoring when O'Connor saw her back post header narrowly miss the near post. There was a big scare for the home side when the impressive Eleanor Ryan-Doyle went down midway through the first half with an innocuous looking ankle injury but after some lengthy treatment, was ok to resume. With a war of attrition developing it was going to take something special to break the deadlock, and just after a half hour O'Connor went one better than her miss minutes previous, hitting a stunning right footed effort from 25-yards out that flew in off the underside of the bar. Goal | Aoife O'Connor puts Athlone Town in front against Peamount United 👏 — FAIreland (@FAIreland) August 16, 2025 Immediately after taking the lead, skipper Madie Gibson went agonisingly close to doubling her lead smashing a left footed volley across goal narrowly missing the foot of the post. On the stroke of half-time the American was brilliantly denied by Amanda Budden, in almost a carbon copy of her previous effort, but the former Shels and Shamrock Rovers stopper got down sharply to tip around the post. Following a slightly extended half time break, which saw the Champions receive a ticking off by the officials, both teams were back going hell for leather once again. Just a couple of minutes after the restart Athlone Town thought they had doubled their lead when Gibson's vicious in-swinging corner was touched onto the back post by an under-pressure Budden before being bundled over the line but referee John Sconnie Walsh saw an infringement in the crowd of bodies. The hosts raised the intensity once again, pressing high and forcing their opponents into turning the ball over, leading to an animated Colin Fortune screaming at his team to try get back to passing the ball and take the sting out of the game. Having been restricted to shots from distance, a frustration grew in the home side at where that one clear opportunity to level might come from as Natalie McNally and Shauna Brennan looked imperious at the back. And with a quarter of an hour remaining The Peas did manage to force a couple of corners to build up a head of steam to earn their clearest chance of the half. From yet another quality Fitzgerald delivery, substitute Rebecca Watkins was aggressive winning her header but just couldn't guide the ball on target. With just five minutes remaining Fitzgerald hit a rocket of a free kick from all of thirty yards that looked destined for the roof of the net but at the final moment was acrobatically tipped over by Maria Matthaiou leaving the Peamount bench with their heads in their hands and a feeling that it wouldn't be their day. And with the last kick of the game, Mattaiou proved the hero once again standing big to deny Watkins who had raced clear on goal but at the crucial moment shot straight at the Cypriot keeper. The visitors held strong to book their place in the semi-final and keep the dream of a double this season alive and must dust themselves down as they look forward to hosting title rivals Shelbourne in a mouth-watering clash next Saturday night whilst the Peas travel to Dalymount on Tuesday night looking to put this disappointment behind them. Peamount: Amanda Budden; Lauryn O'Callaghan, Abbie Tuthill, Mary Phillips, Dearbhaile Beirne; Karen Duggan, Jess Fitzgerald; Ellen Dolan, Sadhbh Doyle, Aisling Spillane (Sorcha Melia, 86'); Eleanor Ryan-Doyle (Rebecca Watkins, 46') Athlone Town: Maria Matthaiou; Kellie Brennan, Kayleigh Shine, Natalie McNally, Shauna Brennan: Aoife O'Connor (Kate Slevin, 67'), Sarah Rice; Roisin Molloy, Alexis Strickland, Madison Gibson; Kelly Brady Referee: John Sconnie Walsh Elsewhere, Tr eaty United secured their semi-final spot in a dominant 2-0 win over DLR Waves at the UCD Bowl. Second-half goals from Madelyn Robbins and Bella Flocchini ensured the Shannonsiders progress to the final four of the FAI up for just the second time.

Eve McMahon finishes eleventh overall at European Championships

With a miracle final day needed for Eve McMahon to deliver big, the Dublin sailor appeared to be back on form this morning in Sweden as she convincingly won the opening race of the day at the European Championships. That result brought her back into contention for a solid finish to the six-day event but in the two races that followed, small errors on the race course meant that she finished in the bottom half of the fleet each time. She finished eleventh European overall and as consolation won the bronze medal for the under-23 age group. There was good news for the McMahon household as her elder brother, Ewan scored a personal best at the regatta with ninth European in his ILCA 7 men's event. His final day also opened well with a third place, then a tenth followed by a 19th. His team-mate Finn Lynch never found his regular top ten form this week and ended 16th European in the 153-strong field. The main season is now over for the one-person dinghy sailors but all three have been invited to compete in the Sailing Grand Slam final in The Netherlands next month.

Mark Dowd to become new Roscommon manager

MARK DOWD has been selected as the new manager of the Roscommon senior football side. The move will be subject to ratification at the next county board meeting, with Dowd's backroom team to be announced in due course. Advertisement Dowd succeeds Davy Burke, who last June announced he had decided to step down at the end of his three-year term. Currently the manager of Roscommon Gaels, the Strokestown native was previously part of the management team when Roscommon won the All-Ireland Minor Championship in 2006. He also guided Ballaghaderreen to the 2012 Mayo Senior Football Championship title and coached the Roscommon U21 team to Connacht Championship glory in 2015. Dowd was part of the coaching setup for Roscommon's 2010 and 2019 Connacht Senior Championship triumphs, and he helped his home club, Strokestown, win the 2022 Roscommon Senior Championship. 'Mark has an outstanding track record at both club and county level, and he brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion for Roscommon football,' Roscommon GAA County Chairperson Brian Carroll said. 'We are confident that his leadership will help drive this team forward and build on the progress of recent years. 'I have had the pleasure of working with Mark on numerous occasions over the last 12 years, and I know the Roscommon Senior Football team is in safe hands going forward.'
