Steve Sarkisian earns spot on Dodd Trophy preseason watch list

USA Today08-07-2025
With the 2025 college football season just a few months away, the Texas Longhorns have been popular on preseason watch lists. That continued on Monday when Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian was named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Dodd Trophy. The award celebrates a coach who has achieved success on the field while also emphasizing the importance of scholarship, leadership, and integrity.
As Sarkisian looks to add to his trophy case, he will have competition. He was one of 26 coaches in the nation on the list. This is not unfamiliar territory for the architect of the Longhorns' success. Last year, Sarkisian was honored on both the 2024 Dodd Trophy preseason and midseason watch lists.
During Sarkisian's tenure, the Longhorns have been one of the most successful programs in the country. They have one of the best chances at winning a national title after tying the program record with 13 wins last season. Over the last two years, with Sarkisian leading the way, Texas has 25 wins. However, his impact on his players extends beyond the box score.
He has also helped his players reach their dreams. Just a few months ago, former Longhorns stars such as Matthew Golden, Gunnar Helm, Quinn Ewers, and Andrew Mukaba were drafted by NFL teams. The year before, Adonai Mitchell and Xavier Worthy heard their names called after being coached by Sarkisian. That is partly why the Longhorns head coach is up for another honor.
Although Sarkisian's focus is on winning a national title, he won't have to wait long to see if he advances to the next round. The field will be narrowed down at midseason. The winner will then be picked by a panel that includes previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family, and a College Football Hall of Fame member.
While Sarkisian will ultimately be judged by wins and losses, adding more hardware to his trophy case would be a reason to celebrate. He has a good resume to back it up with what he has accomplished during his time in Austin.

Longhorns unveil jaw-dropping new high-tech locker room complete with reclining chairs

Back in the Tom Herman era, renovating the Texas locker room became a big story. Images of Herman taking a sledgehammer to the old lockers and the reported $8,700 dollar per locker price tag was the talk of Longhorns Nation. But it's now been eight years and the Longhorns Football program decided it was time for an update. And what an update! Instead of current Texas coach Steve Sarkisian destroying the old lockers, they were put up for auction in May, clearing the way for the renovation to begin. Each new locker has its own reclining chair. There are smartly appointed drawers for shoes and a cabinet for personal belongings. The lockers are custom decorated for each player. The players name and number face out into the room and each player's picture and name are on the inside. There are also cabinets and cubbies for the pads and helmets. The carpet in the new locker room is black with a wide burnt orange border and "Texas Longhorns" in burnt orange block lettering. Each row of lockers has a big screen TV at the end for players to gather around. There are also SEC, Longhorns and Nike logos etched above the lockers. Somewhere, maybe even Tom Herman is proud. Longhorns women's basketball reveals 2025-26 conference schedule

With the women's college basketball season just a few months away, Longhorns fans can start marking their calendars. On Tuesday, Texas revealed its SEC slate for the 2025-2026 season. After falling just a few wins short of a national title last year, they have a few exciting matchups on the horizon. During the 2025-2026 campaign, Texas is set to welcome Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M to the Moody Center. In conference play, they will go on the road to face Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. The Longhorns' first conference home game will come on January 4th when they take on Ole Miss. Four days later, Auburn will make the trip to Forty Acres before Texas goes on the road to face LSU and South Carolina. The January slate also includes trips to Fayetteville on the 25th and Gainesville on the 29th. When the regular season comes to an end, Texas will shift its focus to the 2026 SEC Women's Basketball Tournament. It will be held at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. The tournament, which will include all 16 games, is set to start on March 4 and end on March 8th. While the Longhorns will be looking to add another conference title to the rafters, they also have unfinished business. Last season, they made it to the Final Fur before their season came to an end. With a roster full of talent and retiring stars such as Madison Booker, they are poised to build on their success. In conference play, Texas will be able to show just how good they are. If they can mirror their success from the 2023-2024 campaign, the rest of the SEC could be in trouble. Actor Glen Powell surprises Texas Longhorns walk-on linebacker with scholarship

Actor Glen Powell hands out Longhorns scholarship to walk-on linebacker Hard work pays @marshlandwehr, you're now on scholarship! 🤘Special thanks to @glenpowell for the assist!#ChadPowers premieres Sept 30 only on Hulu It is always cool when a walk-on gets presented with a scholarship. It is great when the coach awards the scholarship at an all-team meeting. It is amazing when a famous actor and alum assists. That's what happened to Texas Linebacker Marshall Landwehr, as he got a full ride presented by Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and actor Glen Powell. After starting a team meeting, Sark told the team they had a video first. Glen Powell, famous for Top Gun: Maverick, Twisters and Hitman, popped up on the big screen. Powell has also been making Chad Powers, about a football imposter created by Arch Manning's uncle Eli. "What's up Longhorns? It's Glen Powell, fellow Texas alum. I have new found respect for what it takes to join a football team. It takes grit. It takes grind. And most importantly, it takes heart. Marshall, your hard work has not gone unnoticed. That's why Texas is giving you a scholarship." - Texas Ex Glen Powell After the message, the team absolutely erupted and mobbed Landwehr at his seat in the meeting room. Finally, the Highland Park native hugged his coach. "When we talk about everybody in this room has a role in the organization, this is the epitome of that dude. I couldn't be more fired up for you man. Congratulations!" -- Texas coach Steve Sarkisian Ironically, Landwehr and Michael Taaffe are the only players left on the roster from the 5-7 2021 Longhorns team. Both were walk-ons. Taaffe got his scholarship in 2022 just before the Alamo Bowl. Now Lendwehr joines him just in time for his senior year. Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.
