Abhinav Bindra Named Among Nine IOC Mental Health Ambassadors
Abhinav Bindra has been named an IOC mental health ambassador to prioritise mental health in sports through open discussions and support.
Abhinav Bindra, India's first-ever individual gold medallist at the Olympics, has been named one of the nine mental health ambassadors by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Alongside Abhinav Bindra, who secured gold in the men's 10m air rifle shooting at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the list includes Olympians Holly Bradshaw (British pole vaulter), Camille Cheng (swimmer from Hong Kong, China), Bruno Fratus (Brazilian swimmer), Gracie Gold (American figure skater), Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith (sprinter from Ivory Coast), Ryan Pini (swimmer from Papua New Guinea), Akani Simbine (South African sprinter), and Masomah Ali Zada (Afghan cyclist).
'The IOC believes that mental health is just as important as physical health, and no athlete should face challenges alone. That's why, as part of the IOC Mental Health Action Plan, we've brought together a group of Olympians from around the world to lead the way in creating a more open and supportive sporting environment," IOC said in a statement.
'The IOC Mental Health Ambassadors are using their voices and experiences to break down stigma, encourage honest conversations, and champion mental well-being in sport.
'Each Ambassador serves as a trusted advocate, helping to share evidence-based messages, offer valuable feedback on IOC mental health initiatives, and inspire open and honest conversations, within sport and beyond.
'Whether through social media, one-on-one conversations or IOC educational programmes, they're here to inspire and support the athlete community, and ensure that mental health remains a vital part of the high-performance environment. With athletes leading the conversation, we're working together to build a culture where mental health matters, and where every athlete feels safe, supported and heard," the statement concluded.

Joakim Alexandersson names 23-member squad for SAFF U-17 Womens Championship
New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI) India U-17 women's team head coach Joakim Alexandersson on Sunday named a 23-member squad for the SAFF U-17 Championship to be played in Thimphu, Bhutan from August 20 to 31. Alexandersson, who historically guided the India U-20s to their first AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup qualification in two decades earlier this month, will now lead the U-17s as they gear up for the SAFF Championship in the lead-up to the AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers, which will be held in October in Kyrgyz Republic. In a new format that will provide the players more game time, the SAFF U-17 Women's Championship will feature four teams — India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh — competing in a double round-robin league. Each team will play six matches, and the one with the most points will be crowned champion. India will begin their campaign against Nepal (August 20), followed by contests against Bangladesh (August 22), Bhutan (August 24 and 27), Nepal (August 29), and finally, Bangladesh again (August 31). 'If You Keep Playing, Won't Be Able To Walk': Ex-All-Rounder Defied 5 Fractures To Make India Comeback
Last Updated: Irfan Pathan took 300 international wickets and became an all-rounder. Injuries shortened his career, ending his Test run in 2008. Irfan Pathan is regarded as one of the finest left-arm pacers to have played for India across formats. With 300 international wickets in 29 Tests, 120 ODIs, and 24 T20Is, the former pacer used to be a nightmare for some of the greatest batters in international cricket. He kicked off his career as a pure fast bowler, but with time, he ended up being an all-rounder. Speaking of which, he has a hundred (against Pakistan) and 6 fifties in Test cricket, five half-centuries in ODIs. But despite such impressive numbers, Pathan played his last game for India just a few weeks before turning 27. Being a fast bowler isn't easy in international cricket, given the risk of getting injured if not managed properly. Pathan had a similar fate while representing India. Back in 2012, he was on the course of a spirited comeback, but excessive cricket denied him the chance to play Test cricket anymore. Speaking to Lallantop, the former all-rounder believes that better self-management could have let him play more for the country. 'When I look back, I think had the situation been handled better, I would have ended up with 700 wickets. But I never regret that," Pathan said. The former cricketer recalled how excessive cricket after some serious back injuries cut his career short. 'Before I made a comeback in 2012, I had a tough phase with injuries between 2010-11. I suffered five stress fractures in my back. I played through the pain for nearly a year and a half until it got so bad that I couldn't even stand, let alone run. My pace dropped, and despite multiple scans nothing showed up—until I went to Australia, where doctors revealed the five fractures, a collapsed disc, and a cracked bone," Pathan said. 'When I was on the comeback trail in 2012, the physio even warned me, ' Bas karo. Ab aur kheloge to shayad aage jaakar chal nahi paoge (If I kept pushing, I might not be able to walk in the future). But I just wanted to be pain-free and play. I returned to domestic cricket, picked wickets, earned an India call-up, and performed." 'After the Champions League in South Africa, I was informed about a possible Test comeback. Once back in India, I spoke to coach Duncan Fletcher, pointing out that I was scheduled to play eight out of nine days and requested some workload management. However, chief selector Sandeep Patil insisted it was mandatory to feature in the practice game before the Test series. I pushed through those eight days, and on the final day, my back gave way—I ended up with another fracture," he added. Pathan last played a Test in 2008, against South Africa in Ahmedabad. In 24 matches, the former left-arm pacer picked up 100 wickets with best figures of 7/59.
