Groves avoids crash to win Tour Stage 20, Pogacar retains lead
PONTARLIER, France - Australian Kaden Groves completed his set of grand tour stage wins when he prevailed on the Tour de France's penultimate ride, avoiding a crash on slippery roads before powering to a solo triumph on the 184.2km journey from Nantua on Saturday.
Groves's bike-handling skills were on display when he managed to stay up as Spain's Ivan Romeo and France's Romain Gregoire skidded out of control in front of him on a wet descent 21 kilometres from the finish.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider then attacked from a reduced breakaway bunch and never looked back in the remaining 17 kilometres, bursting into tears in a mix of disbelief and exhaustion after the line.
Groves, who gave his team their third victory in this year's Tour after Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel also won, has seven Vuelta and two Giro d'Italia stage wins to his name.
Dutchman Frank van den Broek took second place, 54 seconds behind, with his compatriot Pascal Eenkhoorn third, five seconds further back.
Defending champion Tadej Pogacar spent a quiet day in the main peloton and made another step towards a fourth Tour title as he retained his overall leader's yellow jersey with a 4:24 advantage over Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard.
The final stage is a 132.3km ride from Mantes-la-Jolie to Paris, where the peloton will cycle up the famous Butte Montmartre three times before the final laps on the Champs-Elysees. REUTERS

Red Bull's Max Verstappen is third but 81 points behind with his hopes of a fifth successive title fast receding. There are 11 races left and the intra-team rivalry will be the major focus with McLaren set to retain the constructors' crown with ease as they now a massive 268 points clear of second-placed Ferrari. Norris won in Britain after Piastri was penalised for braking erratically behind the safety car but the Australian triumphed at Spa by slipstreaming past from second on the grid. "There is very, very little between our two drivers and this is because the two drivers are racing at a very, very high level," Stella told reporters. "I think the difference will be made by the accuracy, the precision, the quality of the execution," added the Italian, who worked with champions at Ferrari and said Piastri and Norris were both operating at that level. Piastri had discovered the same during the Saturday sprint, when Verstappen won from second on the grid after seizing the lead on the opening lap. "We saw in Silverstone that an issue, a sporting issue for Oscar, during the safety car restart and the consequent penalty cost him the race," said Stella. "Here we saw that, somehow related to the circuit characteristic, it would have been very difficult for Lando to keep the position, starting first at the safety car restart." Stella discounted a battery problem that appeared to be an issue initially, saying a slight anomaly had occurred on both cars and Norris should not have been any worse off. French trimaran takes line honours in 100th anniversary Fastnet Race
SVR Lazartigue surged to line honours in the 2025 Rolex Fastnet Race on Monday, the sleek blue trimaran slicing through the darkness to become the first of a record-breaking 444-strong fleet to reach Cherbourg, France. Skippered by 28-year-old Tom Laperche and packed with ocean-racing royalty — Franck Cammas, Peter Burling and Amelie Grassi among them — the 32-metre foiling Ultim completed the 695-nautical mile course in one day, 17 hours and 18 minutes. That was short of her own record of one day, 8 hours, 38 minutes from 2023, but still more than enough to comfortably seal victory. In offshore racing, line honours go to the first boat to finish the course — typically the fastest, most technologically advanced yacht in the fleet. But the overall winner of the Fastnet Race is awarded the Fastnet Challenge Cup, based on corrected time under the International Rating Certificate (IRC) handicap system. The IRC system levels the playing field across different boat sizes and designs, meaning a well-sailed 12-metre yacht can beat a 30-metre racing machine once handicaps are applied. SVR Lazartigue crossed the line just before 0538 CET (0338 GMT) on Monday, more than 50 minutes ahead of Banque Populaire. Actual Ultim 4 came home third among the Ultim class, nearly three and a half hours behind the winner. With two Ultims still racing and the bulk of the monohull fleet spread across the Channel, the battle again showcased the blistering speed and cutting-edge design of offshore trimarans. Monohull line honours, awarded to the first monohull to finish regardless of rating, are still to be decided. The Rolex Fastnet Race has tested sailors' skill and endurance for a century. First held in 1925 with seven boats, the biennial contest now draws hundreds of yachts from around the globe, setting off from Cowes on England's Isle of Wight and tracing a 695-nautical mile course around the famous Fastnet Rock off Ireland's south coast before finishing in Cherbourg. Triathlon-PTO announces investment by Saudi Arabia-backed sports fund
Find out what's new on ST website and app. The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), a governing body which organises professional triathlons around the world, said on Monday that it had secured investment from Saudi Arabia-backed sports fund SURJ. Sources close to the deal valued it at around $40 million. "The funding will support the PTO's continued international growth, innovation in race formats, and long-term athlete and fan engagement," the PTO said in a statement. "It will also help accelerate the PTO's expansion into the MENA region, with Saudi Arabia a likely future host market for its flagship T100 Triathlon World Tour. "Today's announcement follows a $10 million investment from Cordillera Investment Partners in March 2025 and builds on previous rounds led by Divergent Investments, Warner Bros. Discovery, and health-focused venture fund Eckuity." The PTO and governing body World Triathlon jointly launched the "T100" race series last year, which features races comprising a 2km swim, 80km bike and 18km run.
