Mitch Fong went to a few stores in Dartmouth Crossing on Sunday to get road salt before another round of snow and ice.
He visited three stores, but came away empty-handed.
"It's been a hot commodity," said Fong.
The CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon said this weekend's storm will bring "a messy mix of ice pellets, freezing rain and rain."
Fong said the streets have not been properly cleaned following the last storm on Thursday, which means they will only get worse with a second layer of ice and snow.
"Today I walked the dog, I saw so many people fall," he said. "There's not a lot being done to make the sidewalk safe for people."
Free salt in Spryfield
While Fong, who lives on Agricola Street, struggled to find salt at stores, a landscaping company in Spryfield was giving it away Sunday.
Ali Alizy, the owner of Carlton Landscaping, a company that does plowing, says his company keeps a big supply of salt on hand.
He said he was selling the salt all week ahead of the storm, but he decided to give it away at a parking lot after seeing the need in his community.
Alizy said they gave away more than 1,300 kilograms of salt. "Everybody we were delivering salt to, they were super grateful."
He said demand was so high, he initially limited it to one bucket per person. But he had to limit it again because so many lined up in front of his pickup truck. Eventually, he ran out.
