Blood test for early signs of pancreatic cancer trialled by Southampton doctors
The genomic test uses blood samples to look for markers of the deadly disease, which often has vague symptoms and can kill people within months.
The test is being trialled in patients with a recent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes – a known risk factor for pancreatic cancer.
People over 50 with a new case of type 2 diabetes have a higher chance of also being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer within three years.
Early data suggests the Avantect test is 68% accurate in picking up people with early stages of the disease, which kills almost 10,000 people every year in the UK.
It is also 97% accurate in ruling out people without pancreatic cancer.
The new clinical trial has been launched at the Cancer Research UK Southampton Clinical Trials Unit.
Zaed Hamady, consultant surgeon and pancreatic researcher at the University of Southampton, is leading the trial.
He said: 'There is currently no targeted early detection or surveillance test for the disease meaning patients are often diagnosed late when they become really unwell.
'If we can develop approaches to detect the cancer sooner, then there are more options we may consider to treat the disease, and patients will have a much better chance of long-term survival.
'Although most people with diabetes will not go on to develop the disease, new onset diabetes is associated with a six to eight-fold increased risk.
'This patient group gives us a way to test how accurate the new diagnostic blood test is, and that could potentially help thousands of people in the future.'
The test has been validated by biotechnology company ClearNote Health in patients at a high risk for developing pancreatic cancer, including those aged 50 and over newly-diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and those with a genetic predisposition and/or family history of pancreatic cancer.
According to researchers, newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients often have similar symptoms as a person with early-stage pancreatic cancer.
This is because the cancer destroys the same insulin-producing cells that are also destroyed in diabetes.
Sean Cleghorn's wife, Allison, discovered she had pancreatic cancer at Christmas 2020 but died four weeks later aged 54.
Mr Cleghorn, a father of three from Kingsclere in Hampshire, said: 'The only symptom Allison displayed was some slight indigestion and then she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the autumn of 2020.
'Allison had always eaten healthily, was active and avoided processed food, so this diagnosis was puzzling for us.
'When we learned that new-onset type 2 diabetes was a potential risk factor for pancreatic cancer, we asked for further testing and a scan confirmed she had terminal cancer.
'We hoped she could have chemotherapy to prolong her life, but she became too weak and died four weeks later.
'Perhaps if she had been diagnosed sooner with a test like the one that's currently being trialled, we may have had time to make more memories with our three children.'
Angelica Cazaly, senior trial manager for the trial, said: 'We are asking people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes who are attending GP surgeries or diabetic clinics whether they would like to take part in the study.
'Initially, we will collect blood samples from 800 people for testing.
'The results from the test, together with medical information collected from each patient, will help provide researchers with important information on how best to proceed with the rest of the study that will evaluate how accurate the test is at predicting pancreatic cancer.'
Around 10,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every year and just one in 20 survive the disease for 10 years or more.
Samuel Levy, chief scientific officer of ClearNote Health, said: 'Our early data demonstrate that our Avantect test can identify pancreatic cancer in stages I and II.
'We are excited to collaborate with the Cancer Research UK Southampton Clinical Trials Unit and the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust on this transformative study that could redefine how pancreatic cancer is detected and managed for patients at high risk.'
Dr Chris Macdonald, head of research at Pancreatic Cancer UK, said over 80% of people with pancreatic cancer are currently diagnosed too late for treatment.
He added: 'This is an exciting time for early detection research, with tests using blood, breath and urine in development which, if shown to be successful in clinical trials, could save thousands of lives every year.
'Early findings from these tests are very promising, but more research is needed to ensure that they are as accurate as possible before they will be available in the GP surgery.'

An ancient 250-mile-wide blob is heading towards New York City
Picture a cross between the movies, The Blob and Volcano (Picture: Getty/Metro) A gigantic blob is slowly creeping towards New York City – and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Well, kind of. Researchers from the University of Southampton have discovered a mass of molten rock underneath the Eastern US. The slime, known as the Northern Appalachian Anomaly, stretches 2249 miles wide and is oozing southwest at 12 miles per million years. But don't worry about being stuck behind it and being late to work – it sits 124 miles underground, according to the study in the journal Geology. It's considered a thermal anomaly because it's far hotter than where it sits in the asthenosphere, a semi-molten layer of Earth. Study lead and geoscientist Tom Gernon told Metro that the thermal lump has long puzzled scientists, as it doesn't quite fit into our understanding of how contents formed. The anomaly may have split Greenland from North America 80 million years ago, the study suggests (Picture: University of Southampton) Earth used to be a supercontinent called Pangaea. But our planet is a massive puzzle and its pieces, tectonic plates, are always moving around on a layer of molten rock. Gernon said: 'Imagine pulling a toffee bar apart, the toffee thins. That's exactly what happens to continents when they're stretched apart.' About 180million years ago, Pangaea broke apart and North America drifted from Africa. Experts have long believed that the blob was leftover magma from this geological shift. Yet the study, which included the Helmholtz Center for Geosciences in Germany, said the blob is a lot 'younger' than that. 'We proposed it formed when Greenland and Canada separated. So, admittedly not too much younger, it's 90million years old,' Gernon said. To map the molten sludge's route, scientists used seismic tomography, which is essentially an MRI for tectonic plates. The idea, Gernon said, is that hot rock sitting just outside the Earth's core rises to fill the cracks in the crust caused by rifts. This hot goo peels off the weakest layer of tectonic plates, 'like the blobs of a hot lava lamp', and lifts the crust from below. 'Think of a hot air balloon, you're happily bopping along and you drop the weight, you rise up. This anomaly is cutting the weight – the weakened layer of the crust – so the whole plate becomes lighter and lifts,' Gernon said. The seismic lava lamp could explain why the Appalachian Mountains are still standing tall despite years of erosion and why volcanic activity in the region causes diamonds to reach the surface. As the blob drifts away from the Appalachians, the mountain range will slowly begin to sag without the thermal lift. This syrup isn't anything for New Yorkers to be concerned about – its centre won't pass through the Big Apple for the next 15trillion years. Nor will it bring about the Apocalypse when it does so. 'It's not going to be a big, crazy, super volcanic eruptions, nothing like that at all,' he said. While the study was focused on the Northern Appalachian Anomaly, the team also looked at a hot zone beneath North Central Greenland, which is influencing the region's miles-thick ice sheets. 'Something that happened 90million years ago can still have an impact on us today,' Gernon added. 'It's an interesting thought experiment, to go and re-examine these ancient things that we didn't really understand. 'Maybe, in the light of this new idea, we can realise what interesting effects they're having on the surface.' Family 'over the moon' with Southampton albinism research funding
The mother of a two-year-old girl with albinism has welcomed funding for research into improving eyesight for children with the daughter Amelia is severely visually impaired as a result of albinism.A research project at the University of Southampton will use over half a million pounds of funding to look at whether Levodopa, a drug commonly used to treat Parkinson's Disease, could improve the eyesight for children like her."As a family we are over the moon that the research has been given the go ahead," said Amelia's mother, Abby. "It's really exciting to imagine how many children could benefit in the years to come." Albinism affects between one in 12,000 and one in 15,000 people in European countries, and affects the production of melanin - pigment which colours eyes, skin and condition is associated with a deficiency of a chemical called L-DOPA, which is essential for the normal development of a result, babies with albinism can have severe sight problems as they grow years, Dr Helena Lee has looked at whether replacing L-DOPA could improve eye research project, called OLIVIA, has been granted £542,000 from the Medical Research Council to investigate whether Levodopa could hold the key if given to children below the age of two."We believe we've found a treatment which will help [children with albinism], and this award means we can start testing this in the real world," said Dr Lee. Abbey and another parent, Joe, whose daughter also has albinism, have already raised over £43,000 to help support the whose two-year-old daughter Raya wears glasses for short-sightedness to protect her eyes, completed seven marathons in seven cities in seven days in aid of the University charity, Gift of Sight."News of this new funding to allow trials to go ahead is fantastic," he university said the OLIVIA study, which is set to begin as a small-scale trial with about 10 children, could also pave the way for identifying new therapies for other childhood eye conditions. Buckler's Hard: Slipway where HMS Agamemnon built revealed
A slipway from the 18th Century where ships for Lord Nelson's fleet were built and launched has been excavated by archaeologists. The team from the University of Southampton said it was the first time one from this period has been totally uncovered in the Hard, the small hamlet in the New Forest where the slipway is located, was once home to one of the busiest private shipyards of the researchers said they hope the findings would help improve their understanding of shipbuilding techniques and infrastructure during the period. The dig was supported by the newly formed Buckler's Hard Shipyard Trust, a conservation charity.A total of 55 wooden warships were built at Buckler's Hard for the Royal Navy in the 1700s, some of which were comparable in size to HMS Victory. "No other private yard built as many ships for the navy during this period," said Professor Jon Adams, director of the university's Centre for Maritime Archaeology. Unlike the slipway at Buckler's Hard, most slipways from the 18th Century are now buried under Adams said that made this one uniquely suited for learning about traditional shipbuilding."The only opportunity is a place like this where you can actually see the whole of the whole of the infrastructure and the logistical structures needed to build ships of that size," he said. One of the most famous ships built at the site was HMS Agamemnon, which took part in the Battle of Trafalgar and was known as Lord Nelson's "favourite".There are now plans to place a replica of the vessel on the end of the slipway as it would have looked under construction.A 3D model of the slipway has also been created to aid research, and the site will be covered with a new layer of soil and topped with timbers in the style of the 1700s."The visitor would then come into the village and actually see what the yard might have looked like," said Prof Adams.
