Charleen Murphy on Prime Time: How online harassment turned into a real-world attack

Irish influencer Charleen Murphy is set to appear on Prime Time on Thursday evening where she will detail how online misogyny has had larger impact on her offline life.
The Dublin native was assaulted on February 10, 2023 by Craig O'Brien while she was at the Grafton Capital Hotel in Dublin. O'Brien was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the assault.
O'Brien, who had previously messaged Charleen, punched her in the back of the head, with the hit so hard that a glass smashed into her face. In a special Prime Time programme viewers will get an insight into the impact on young Irish people who promote a negative form of masculinity.
The programme will feature research carried out by RTÉ journalists Kate McDonald and Jack McCarron, as well as insights from teachers, experts and individuals who have been personally affected.

'I looked to my left and I could see him standing there. Straight away, I knew who it was… He had been messaging me in the past online.'
The lifestyle creator detailed how her trauma was downplayed by online users, with Charleen noting: 'You don't have to have something worse than someone else to still have gone through something bad.'
In the interview, Charleen provides a personal account of how online misogyny is not just digital but has a larger impact.
'People think it's just a comment,' she said, 'But kids are reading that. That's saying to them, 'It's okay for me to post this too,' all the little things turn into big things.'
