‘World's oldest marathon runner', the ‘Turbaned Tornado', dies aged 114 in road accident

Malay Mail15-07-2025
NEW DELHI, July 15 — India's Fauja Singh, believed to be the world's oldest distance runner, has died in a road accident aged 114, his biographer said Tuesday.
Singh, an Indian-born British national, nicknamed the 'Turbaned Tornado', died after being hit by a vehicle in Punjab state's Jalandhar district on Monday.
'My Turbaned Tornado is no more,' Fauja's biographer Khushwant Singh wrote on X.
'He was struck by an unidentified vehicle... in his village, Bias, while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja.'
Singh did not have a birth certificate but his family said he was born on April 1, 1911.
He ran full marathons (42 kilometre) till the age of 100.
His last race was a 10-kilometre event at the 2013 Hong Kong Marathon when 101, where he finished in one hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds.
He became an international sensation after taking up distance running at the ripe old age of 89, after the death of his wife and one of his sons, inspired by seeing marathons on television.
Although widely regarded as the world's oldest marathon runner, he was not certified by Guinness World Records as he could not prove his age, saying that birth certificates did not exist when he was born under British colonial rule in 2011.
Singh was a torchbearer for the Olympics at Athens 2004 and London 2012, and appeared in advertisements with sports stars such as David Beckham and Muhammad Ali.
His strength and vitality were credited to a routine of farm walks and a diet including Indian sweet laddu packed with dry fruits and home-churned curd.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on social media.
'Fauja Singh was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness,' said Modi on X
'He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world.' — AFP

Latham missed the opening test last week, with Mitch Santner stepping in to lead the side to a nine-wicket victory. Santner will continue to skipper the team after Latham failed a fitness test ahead of the second match of the two-test series starting on Thursday in Bulawayo. "It's hugely disappointing to lose Tom again," coach Rob Walter said in a statement. "He's been working hard and had been tracking well towards the second test but unfortunately today he couldn't pass his fitness tests. He's extremely gutted he won't be able to take the park and we're really feeling for him." New Zealand have called up middle-order batter Bevon Jacobs for cover. South Korea's Son draws fans to LA airport

LOS ANGELES: South Korean star Son Heung Min has not even been officially announced as joining Los Angeles FC, but excited fans are already waiting to welcome him. ESPN and The Athletic report that Son, who left Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, will sign with LAFC for an MLS-record transfer fee of US$26 million. LAFC on Tuesday night announced a news conference for a "major announcement" on Wednesday that would seem to be the unveiling of Son. After press reports about Son's possible arrival on Tuesday at Los Angeles International Airport, about 40 fans of Son went to see if they could get an autograph or photograph or even a glimpse of their idol. They were unable to see Son, however, after his sendoff in South Korea a few hours earlier. "Son is immensely important to me. I used to wake up at five or six in the morning to watch him play in England," Jun Kwon, a 19-year-old fan, told AFP. "He's going to change things here. My father and I, who had no interest in MLS, are already won over." He was wearing a gold and black LAFC jersey purchased Tuesday morning and printed with his idol's name. In a decade with Spurs, Son scored 173 goals in 454 matches. The winger confirmed his plans to leave Tottenham in Seoul last weekend after a final match with the Premier League club. At LAFC, Son will replace French striker Olivier Giroud, who was sold to Lille in July, and will share a dressing room with French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, his former teammate at Tottenham.

South-East Asia's rising golf star Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand is now the No. 1 in the Rolex Women's World Golf Ranking

For the second time in her career, Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul has reached No. 1 in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings. Currently the top golfing superstar in South-East Asia, Thitikul achieved the feat thanks to her tie for 30th at the AIG Women's Open, the final Major tournament of the women's golf season. Thitikul moved one spot on the Rolex Rankings, passing American Nelly Korda, who had held the top spot since March 25, 2024. Thitikul first ascended to the top of the Rolex Rankings on October 31, 2022, and held the position for two weeks. She is the second Thai player to reach Rolex Rankings No. 1, along with Ariya Jutanugarn. 'I am very grateful to become the No. 1 player in the world for the second time. This is not just about me – this is about my family, my team, and my friends, not to mention the amazing support I feel from my fans in Thailand and all around the world,' said Thitikul. 'There are so many incredible golfers competing every week, and I will work my hardest to make sure I am a strong representative of our game.' For the record, Thitikul has recorded eight top-10 finishes this season, the most on the LPGA Tour. She captured the title at the Mizuho Americas Open, finished solo second at the Amundi Evian Championship, and earned a tie for second at the HSBC Women's World Championship. She currently leads the Race to the CME Globe with 2,204.950 points, the Rolex Player of the Year standings with 104 points, and the scoring average standings at 69.511. Thitikul won twice in 2024, starting with a successful partnership at the Dow Championship with China's Ruoning Yin. She then capped the year with a victory at the CME Group Tour Championship, earning the largest single prize in the history of women's golf with the US$4 million winner's check. Thitikul has finished second twice at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia, losing an epic nine-hole play to France's Celine Boutier in 2023 and settling for runner-up again last year, just one shot behind champion Yin. Before joining the LPGA Tour, Thitikul became the youngest player ever to win the Ladies European Tour's Race to Costa del Sol in 2021 while also securing Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honours. At 14 years, 4 months, and 19 days, Thitikul also became the youngest golfer to ever win a professional golf tournament with her victory at the LET's Thailand Championship in 2017. Korda first became No. 1 in June 2021 and has spent 108 total weeks atop the Rolex Rankings, becoming the sixth player to reach triple digits in weeks at World No. 1. Thitikul, Yin, and Korda are also expected to be among the star players for Malaysia's premier golf tournament, the Maybank Championship, scheduled for October 30 - November 2 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC). The tournament over the last few years has seen the world's best players taking part in the tournament, and this year Thitikul will certainly be out to grab the top spot after two runners-up performances.
