Madhya Pradesh League to start on May 27 in Indore, introduces Women's League
The Madhya Pradesh League (MPL) is set to return for its latest season, commencing May 27 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Organised with an aim to foster grassroots cricket talent across the state, the league promises to be bigger and more inclusive than ever before.
This season will witness the launch of a Women's Cricket League, which will be held alongside the men's matches. The women's competition will feature three teams, including one representing the capital city of Bhopal, according to MPL press release.
Organised by Gwalior Division Cricket Association (GDCA) under the aegis of MP Cricket Association, the men's competition, which featured five teams last season, has been expanded to seven, with the inclusion of teams from the Bundelkhand and Chambal regions.
Speaking about the League, Vice President of Gwalior Division Cricket Association Mahanaaryaman Rao Scindia said, "Here's to another incredible year with MPL! We're excited to discover and nurture fresh talent, giving them the platform they deserve to kickstart their careers. This year, we're especially proud to launch our Women's League -- one of the few of its kind in the country. Let's keep empowering youth and driving the future of Indian cricket forward."
Speaking about the date and tournament, Madhya Pradesh League (MPL) CEO Ravi Patankar said, "With the addition of new teams and the introduction of the women's league, we are committed to offering a robust platform for players to showcase their talent and take a step closer to professional cricket. The response from regional associations and players has been overwhelming, and we look forward to an exciting season of cricket."
Men's team: Gwalior Cheetahs, Bhopal Leopards, Jabalpur Royal Lions, Rewa Jaguars, Indore Pink Panthers, Chambal Ghariyals, Bundelkhand Bulls.
Women's team: Chambal Ghariyals, Bhopal Wolves and Bundelkhand Bulls

Quek controlled the early pace to take the first game 11-7, but Jha edged a tense second game on Golden Point with a forehand winner, before powering through the quickly drew level through Maria Xiao, who overcame a strong start from the in-form Britt Eerland to win 2-1, before the Delhi duo of Sathiyan and Xiao beat Jeet Chandra and Eerland, extending their perfect mixed doubles run to edge their team ahead on the kept Jaipur Patriots in the fight. After saving three game points in the opener to win on Golden Point, the youngster came from behind again in the second game to clinch it 11-9, marking his first win in IndianOil UTT. Sathiyan responded with an 11-6 win in the third, leaving the tie level at 6-6 heading into the final a high-stakes decider, Sreeja took the opening game 11-9 despite Diya clawing back from 1-5 down. With Dabang Delhi TTC's hopes on the line, Diya responded with a strong 11-6 win in Game 2. BCCI requests ECB to name award for individual performance in India vs England Tests after Pataudi
The England and Wales Cricket (ECB) board's decision to retire Pataudi Trophy and rename the forthcoming England vs India five-match Test match series as 'Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy' has received a mixed response worldwide. However, to keep the legacy of former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi alive, it is learnt that the Indian board has now requested the ECB to name one of their awards for individual performance on Pataudi in the forthcoming Test match series. The ECB had decided to retire Pataudi Trophy from this year onwards and has instead introduced 'Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy' in line with the modern trend of naming series after former players. In recent times, the ECB in association with Cricket West Indies renamed the Wisden Trophy established in 1963 and played between the two teams as Richards-Botham Trophy from 2020 in mark of respect to the two greats Viv Richards and Ian Botham. Similarly, the bilateral series between England and New Zealand takes place for Crowe-Thorpe Trophy which is named after Martin Crowe and Graham Thorpe. And since 1996, India have been playing the Test series against Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which has now gained iconic status. And the decision to rename the Pataudi Trophy seem to be done on similar lines. 'It's the ECB who decides on whom they want to name their series. The BCCI has no role in it as it's their home series. We have requested them to name one of the post match Trophy on Pataudi and they will revert to us,' a BCCI official told The Indian Express. The ECB had decided to move on from Pataudi's name earlier this year without giving any official reason. However, they had informed Pataudi's son, a well known actor Saif Ali Khan about it in April this year. India will be playing a five-match Test series against England which is scheduled to start from June 20th at Headingley, Leeds. The Pataudi Trophy came into existence in 2007 to celebrate India's 75th anniversary of their first Test in 1932. At 21, Pataudi had become the youngest Indian Test captain. His father Iftikar Ali Khan played for both England and India. Though ECB is yet to make their series name official, it is learnt that they have informed Anderson and Tendulkar about it and the duo is set to unveil the trophy before the first Test. The English pacer Anderson retired from all forms of game in July 2024 where he took 704 wickets in 188 Tests. Tendulkar played 200 Tests and scored 15921 runs in a long illustrious career. Talking to Zoom, Pataudi's daughter, Soha said, 'For us, it is disappointing that they are considering or have chosen to retire the Pataudi Trophy because I think that my father's contribution to Indian cricket has been immense and in some form, I feel that it is important to recognise the contribution of the people in early years, especially somebody like him, who really inculcated the sense of Indian-ness and oneness and a sense of pride, winning the first overseas Test and things like that.' She added, 'I think he should be remembered in some form, in some way and hopefully the BCCI will consider some other way of doing that, if not this.'

FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship: Arjun Erigaisi and Team MGD1 win historic Rapid title
It was a landmark day for Indian chess as Team MGD1, led by Arjun Erigaisi, clinched the Rapid title at the third edition of the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Team Championship, becoming the first Indian-sponsored team to achieve this feat in the event's history. MGD1 is not only a chess team but also a Pune-based chess management and investment firm that nurtures talent, organises tournaments, and fields Team MGD1 as its flagship venture. Distinct from other teams that feature one or two Indian players, MGD1's line-up is predominantly Indian, and includes Arjun Erigaisi, Pentala Harikrishna, Leon Luke Mendonca, Pranav V, and Atharvaa P. Tayade. In a tense final round against Malcolm's Mates, it was Erigaisi, Pranav, and Tayade who delivered crucial victories to secure the title after an intense day marked by a neck-and-neck contest with Hexamind Chess Team, featuring the likes of Levon Aronian, Vidit Gujrathi and Divya Deshmukh. Hexamind ultimately finished just one match point behind MGD1, while Viswanathan Anand's Freedom claimed third place with 17 match points. About the event The third edition of the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship commenced in Hammersmith, London, on Wednesday and will run till June 15. This year's event features an extended five-day format featuring 55 teams: three days dedicated to rapid chess (a 12-round Swiss system) followed by two days of blitz. The tournament has drawn grandmasters, prodigies, and amateur enthusiasts from around the world, all vying for the €500,000 prize fund, with €310,000 allocated to the rapid section and €190,000 to the blitz. Each team consists of six players per match, with the requirement to field at least one female player and one recreational player (rated below 2000 FIDE).
