Business-class comfort on low-cost flights soon
Kolkata: Days after Emirates and Thai Vietjet announced four-class and three-class cabin configurations on their respective flights to Dubai and Bangkok, domestic carrier IndiGo Airlines announced a two-class configuration in its cabin on flights to Delhi and Mumbai. At present, Air India offers business class seats on its flights, while Air India Express has business class on select flights to Chennai, Bengaluru, and Jaipur. Travel agents in Kolkata said the introduction of business class on 11 flights to Delhi starting Sept 12 and on three flights to Mumbai from Sept 16 has triggered excitement among flyers. Executives, businessmen, and traders who prefer flying IndiGo because the airline offers the highest frequency on most sectors, said they were willing to pay more for better comfort. "Jet Airways set the benchmark in business class. Kingfisher also had a good product. After the two went bust, there was Vistara and Air India. After the merger, only AI had business class. But since it did not have many flights, passengers had to compromise on flexibility of travel to avail of it. The introduction of business class by IndiGo will make a big difference," said Travel Agents Federation of India national executive committee member Anil Punjabi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in Kolkata SpiceJet does have a product called SpiceMax that offers greater legroom and priority check-in, but it is essentially a premium economy offering. While all 11 daily flights that IndiGo operates to Delhi from Kolkata will offer IndiGo Stretch, which includes meals and beverages, higher baggage allowance, and priority check-in, only three out of eight flights will offer business class. "As more aircraft with twin configurations are available, more flights to Mumbai will offer business class," said an official. In addition to Stretch, the airline has a Stretch+ offering that provides an even higher baggage allowance and lower cancellation fee. Travel Agent Association of India chairman (east) Anjani Dhanuka said the business class offering would do well as business class in Air India flights from Kolkata have an average occupancy of 65-70%, with some Delhi and Mumbai-bound flights going full. "At present, people who wanted extra legroom on IndiGo flights used to pay for first row or emergency seats. Those travelling to Delhi or Mumbai will now buy business class seats. There is also a good demand on the Kolkata-Bengaluru sector where IndiGo has 10 flights a day," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Mopa-London direct flights from Oct 26
Panaji: Offering hope to Goan expats and British tourists, Air India indicated the resumption of direct flights from Mopa to London (Gatwick) from Oct 26. Air India, currently facing a shortage of aircraft, is expected to operate three flights per week. The airline announced that the route will be operated thrice a week — on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays — using its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Officials at Mopa's Manohar International Airport said that the private airline has slots for the direct flight and can resume operations whenever feasible for the airline. The airline's website has opened up bookings for the direct flight, with economy fares beginning at Rs 31,300 for a one-way flight to London on Oct 26. 'Air India has not cancelled their slots with us. They still have the slots for the London flights, and they can resume operations as soon as they want,' said GMR Goa International Airport Ltd official. Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade had mentioned the need to restore the Goa–London Gatwick flight during the Zero Hour in Parliament. Air India launched the non-stop flight to London in July 2023 with three flights per week. The flight offered a vital travel link for thousands of Goans, including students and senior citizens, living in the UK. The suspension of the flight following the crash at Ahmedabad caused inconvenience to Goans travelling to London. Air India is currently undergoing a $400 million fleet-wide refurbishment programme, with a significant focus on upgrading its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and the Boeing 777 aircraft. This modernisation programme, which will continue well into 2027, has proved to be a challenge for the airline in terms of operational deployment. Resumption of the direct flights to London comes just as Goa's charter season picks up and tourism inflows commence for the travel season. Andhra Pradesh CM inaugurates Ratan Tata Innovation Hubs
Agency: Amaravati, Aug 20 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday inaugurated Ratan Tata Innovation Hubs (RTIHs) at Amaravati and five more centres in the state. The CM was accompanied by Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran and other officials. CM Naidu inaugurated the RTIH zonal centres of Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Anantapur and Tirupati virtually from the Amaravati hub. Named after former chairman of the Tata conglomerate, Ratan Tata, the RTIHs will foster innovation, entrepreneurship ecosystem and mentor startups. 'To keep his (Ratan Tata's) ideas alive, we wanted to create something. That is where this idea has come, Ratan Tata Innovation Hub," said Naidu, addressing the audience during the inaugural function. Ratan Tata died on October 9, 2024. Naidu said he discussed the idea over the phone with Chandrasekaran and the latter accepted it. 'This is where (what) we are thinking, if you (Chandrasekaran) don't have any objection, we wanted to promote his (Ratan Tata) brand for the benefit of this great nation," he said. Naidu said he had requested GMR Group to spearhead the Vizag RTIH, followed by Greenko (Rajahmundry RTIH), MEIL (Vijayawada RTIH), Adani Group (Tirupati RTIH) and Jindal company (Anantapur RTIH). The CM said India is positioned very well, especially after the 1991 reforms, which radically changed the country, and added that the nation enjoys a demographic dividend while several countries are beset with an aging crisis. Highlighting that youngsters can take risks, Naidu said no country can beat India if the population is well managed. In the last 11 years, he said, India rose from being the 11th largest economy to the fourth largest one and exuded confidence that the country will emerge as the third largest economy next year. Emphasising that Andhra Pradesh will become the number one place for innovation and entrepreneurship, Naidu said over 1.64 lakh people signed up for an online entrepreneurship or startup business programme in 24 hours, creating a Guinness world record. The CM had launched the 'Avishkarana Andhra' programme, which aims to create one entrepreneur per family, where the world record was achieved. Naidu said 175 industrial hubs will be created in all the 175 Assembly constituencies of the southern state. He promised to create wealth on one side and take care of the poor on the other. Moreover, he requested all entrepreneurs to help and handhold the RTIH concept to turn it into a success.
