Ops Mega Khas: 117 people detained in Kuala Muda district
ALOR SETAR: Police detained 117 individuals via 'Ops Mega Khas' which was implemented in the Kuala Muda district from April 17 to yesterday (April 21).
Kedah Criminal Investigation Department (CID) head SAC Muhammad Yazid Muhammad Yew said the arrests included 51 individuals who tested positive for drugs and 22 people who were on the police's wanted list.
He said the operation was conducted at locations and against suspects who were identified as contributing to an increase in the crime index in the district.
'The operation was targeted at elements of gambling, immorality, gangsterism, potential criminals such as drug addicts and traffickers, as well as areas identified as high-crime areas.
'As a result, we managed to successfully solve 66 property crime cases involving housebreaking and theft that occurred in the Kuala Muda district,' he said in a statement here today.
He also said that the integrated operation involved 163 police officers and personnel as well as other agencies including the Sungai Petani Municipal Council, Health Ministry, Tenaga Nasional Bhd and Department of Environment.
'This operation proves the commitment of the Kedah police contingent in ensuring that the safety and well-being of the community is maintained. This enforcement action will be implemented from time to time,' he added.

Cops want 'Take It Down' law to curb online sexual exploitation
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should introduce a law similar to the United States' "Take it Down" Act, which criminalises the publication of non-consensual intimate images, including deepfakes, police said. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said such legislation would curb online sexual exploitation. "We need clear boundaries and laws to deal with the challenges of the digital age," he told the New Straits Times. "This is especially important to protect young people from becoming victims of online sex predators." Shuhaily said immoral and malicious conduct should not be condoned, whether in the physical or digital world. "I believe that if we can introduce similar legislation here, enforcement agencies will greatly benefit from it," he said. He was commenting on the "Take it Down" Act enacted in the US last month. The law requires online platforms, social media companies and web hosts to establish a mechanism for people to report and request the removal of intimate or sexually explicit content shared online without consent. Platforms that fail to act within 48 hours face penalties. Federal CID, Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) principal assistant director Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan said other agencies, not just the police, should be empowered to act against online sexual exploitation. "Other enforcement agencies, tech companies and telecommunications providers can also play their part, especially in the context of data storage. "Another aspect that could be looked into is the acceptance of digital evidence without having to go through complex legal processes. "This is especially important when dealing with cross-border offences, where mutual legal assistance (MLA) usually applies. This process can be complex and lengthy," she said. Siti said there was also a need to have post-case support systems. "Take, for example, children who have become offenders. Let's say a minor is addicted to pornographic material and is in possession of such content. They cannot be charged because they are underage. "Currently, it is not mandatory for parents to send these children for intervention. What this means is that these children will be affected by the addiction and may develop unhealthy habits into adulthood," she said. Siti said such individuals had the potential to become sexual offenders within the community. "If they hold jobs where they interact regularly with children, they then have the opportunity to commit sexual offences against minors who are easy to exploit. "So, we need legislation that will help us not only curb online sexual exploitation, but also ensure that children who have been involved in such offences receive intervention and are guided back to the right path," she said.

Negeri Sembilan Commercial Crime Cases Rise, Losses Hit RM47.74 Million
SEREMBAN, June 5 (Bernama) -- Commercial crime cases in Negeri Sembilan have increased, with losses reaching RM47.74 million from January to May this year, compared to RM33.84 million in the same period last year. During this period, 1,351 commercial crime cases were reported in Negeri Sembilan, compared to 1,033 cases reported the previous year, said state deputy police chief SAC Muhammad Idzam Jaafar. He said this reflected an increase of 318 cases, or 30.8 per cent, while the total losses also rose by RM13.9 million, or 41.1 per cent, compared to the same period last year. "Online scams were the main type of commercial crime reported in the state, constituting 82 per cent of all commercial crime cases. "These scams, involving telecommunications fraud (480 cases), online purchase scams (248), non-existent investment schemes (208), fake loan scams (151), and love or parcel scams (22), have resulted in losses exceeding RM42 million," he said in a statement today. Meanwhile, he said police had detected a new phone scam, where perpetrators pose as Touch' n Go card agents and police officers. Muhammad Idzam said the scammers would claim that the victim's Touch 'n Go card had been misused by a third party and that the victim was allegedly involved in money laundering and drug-related crimes. "To resolve the issue, the victim is asked to provide details of their assets, including cash and jewellery. They are then instructed to transfer money to a specified bank account and hand over their jewellery to a runner for investigation purposes. "Following investigations, police traced and seized jewellery that had been pawned by the runner at gold shops and pawnshops around Selangor," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
