Saudi Arabia To Lift Decades-Old Alcohol Ban Ahead Of 2034 FIFA World Cup
Last Updated:
The sales of wine, beer, and cider will be limited to 600 licensed locations across the country, including five-star hotels, luxury resorts, and expat-friendly compounds.
In a historic move, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is planning to lift 73-year-old ban and allow the controlled sale and consumption of alcohol in 2026. The change is part of the country's preparations for hosting international events, including the Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup 2034.
Saudi authorities believe allowing alcohol at certain tourist sites would help the country compete with the UAE and Bahrain, where alcohol is allowed at some tourist hotspots.
As per the media reports, the sales of wine, beer, and cider will be limited to 600 licensed locations across the country, including five-star hotels, luxury resorts, and expat-friendly compounds like Neom, Sindalah Island, and the Red Sea Project.
What Drinks Would Be Allowed?

Permitted locations will be able to serve wine, beer and cider. However, this allowance does not extend to stronger alcoholic drinks, such as spirits. Drinks and liquor with more than 20% alcohol content will remain banned, according to a report by the UK-based Metro, which quoted local Saudi media.
The government will not allow alcohol in homes, shops or public places. Personal alcohol production will also remain banned.
Additionally, only licensed venues and trained staff will be allowed to serve alcohol. The sale of alcohol will follow fixed procedures, the reports said.
Decision Will End 73-Year-Old Ban
The alcohol policy is part of Vision 2030. The move will in effect bring to an end Saudi Arabia's 73-year ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol.
The Kingdom aims to expand tourism, entertainment and hospitality with its more-inclusive national plan. Officials believe the change will help create jobs and bring in foreign investment.
As per the reports, Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932 under Abdulaziz Al Saud with a legal system based on Wahhabi Islam. It followed Sharia law and alcohol was always forbidden, but the actual enforcement and legal ban on alcohol was enforced in 1952.
Saudi Arabia, once an ultra-conservative country, is giving up its traditional image and ushering in a new era of openness and modernity under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The country has eased some limitations on women's rights, allowing them to drive, go to athletic events and concerts with men. In 2018, it abolished a ban on cinema and screened 'Black Panther', which marked the historic return of film to the kingdom.

Nykaa shares drop despite strong Q4 performance
Nykaa parent FSN E-commerce saw shares decline in early trade as Indian market opened with losses on Monday. The counter opened 2 per cent lower at Rs 199 against the previous closing of Rs 203.26 on the BSE. It was trading at Rs 201.26 as of 9:53 am. The beauty and fashion retailer posted strong March quarter numbers last Friday, with nearly doubling to Rs 19 crore. The Mumbai-based company's operating revenue rose 23.6 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2,016.7 crore for the fourth quarter, up from Rs 1,667.9 crore, driven by customer acquisition, brand partnerships, and network expansion. The performance was in line with the company's guidance issued in April, when it projected consolidated net revenue growth in the low to mid-20 per cent range for the March quarter. However, on a sequential basis, Nykaa's Q4 profit declined 29.3 per cent from Rs 26.9 crore reported in the previous quarter. Nykaa's beauty vertical, which contributes over 90 per cent of the company's total revenue, posted a 24.7 per cent YoY increase to Rs 1,895 crore from Rs 1,519 crore. The fashion segment saw muted growth, rising 11 per cent to Rs 161 crore from Rs 145 crore, with gross merchandise value (GMV) growing 18 per cent year-on-year. For the full fiscal year, Nykaa reported a consolidated gross merchandise value (GMV) – total value of goods sold across its platforms – of Rs 15,604 crore, a 25 per cent increase from the previous year. Nykaa currently serves 42 million customers and operates 237 offline stores across India, offering products from over 8,600 brands. In FY25 alone, the company added around 50 stores — its highest annual addition to date. "While BPC segment continues to deliver healthy growth with better profitability, revival in fashion business remains a key monitorable, given the heightened competitive intensity across the industry," said brokerages house Nuvama in a note on Monday. Nuvama analysts continue to expect improvement in profitability on the back of lower losses in fashion and eB2B segment.

Nomura raises Nifty March 2026 target to 26,140 on supportive macros
Nomura on Nifty50: Japan-based brokerage firm Nomura has raised its Nifty50 target for March 2026 to 26,140, up from its previous projection of 24,970, citing favourable domestic macroeconomic conditions and stable equity valuations despite persistent risks to corporate earnings growth. The revised target implies a potential upside of about 6 per cent from current levels. Nomura's analysts believe the market is being supported by falling bond yields, steady domestic inflows, and relatively resilient performance in Indian equities, even as earnings estimates for FY26 and FY27 have been cut. 'We assess the fair value range for the Nifty at 18-24x one-year forward earnings, which implies upside/downside of 24 per cent/12 per cent from current levels. Assuming benign risk premium and low yields, we raise the target valuation multiple to 21x (from 19.5x previously),' Saion Mukherjee and Amlan Jyoti Das, research analysts at Nomura said, in a note. 'Based on 21x P/E on FY27F earnings, we arrive at our March 2026 Nifty target of 26,140 (versus 24,970 previously), suggesting potential upside of 6 per cent from current levels.' Earnings cuts weigh on outlook Despite an earnings season with more beats than misses, Nomura analysts flagged a deceleration in overall growth. The brokerage reviewed Q4FY25 results from 223 companies (including the BSE 200 and its coverage universe), where aggregate profit after tax rose 10 per cent Y-o-Y—6 per cent ahead of consensus—but earnings expectations continue to trend lower. Consensus estimates for FY26 and FY27 earnings have been revised down by 2.3 per cent and 1.4 per cent, respectively, since March 2025. Compared to September 2024, the downgrades are deeper—7.6 per cent and 6.3 per cent, respectively. Nomura expects further earnings cuts of 4–8 per cent for FY27. 'The corporate earnings-to-GDP ratio is already close to its peak,' Nomura noted. 'Significant outperformance to nominal GDP growth appears unlikely in the near term.' Risks to earnings include a weak investment cycle, fiscal consolidation, reduced household financial savings, and sluggish export demand. However, these pressures may be partially offset by softer oil prices, easing inflation, and declining interest rates. Valuation holds up amid global volatility Indian equities are trading at 20.5x one-year forward earnings, near the upper end of their three-year range. Still, the earnings yield to bond yield spread of -1.4 per cent remains within a comfortable band, according to Nomura. 'The favourable spread is comforting and supports our positive view on market valuation,' analysts at Nomura said. 'Even with trade-related global uncertainties and policy risks, equity risk premiums remain low.' Sector preferences tilt to domestic plays, consumption Nomura has shifted its sectoral bias in favour of domestic-oriented stocks and consumption themes over export-led and investment-driven sectors. 'We prefer domestic-focused sectors to exporters given global uncertainties. Within that, consumption themes look more promising due to tailwinds from low inflation, rate cuts, and fiscal support such as income tax reductions,' the report said. The brokerage is overweight on financials, consumer staples, autos, discretionary spending, oil and gas, power, telecom, internet, and real estate. It also favours select domestic healthcare plays and stocks linked to the supply-chain relocation trend—particularly in autos, chemicals, and electronics. Conversely, Nomura remains cautious on IT services, industrials, cement, and metals—sectors tied to capital expenditure cycles and global demand. It also flagged US tariff risks as a near-term headwind for Indian pharma exports, though it sees any correction as a buying opportunity. 'In our view, the investment cycle may be delayed due to global uncertainty,' it said. 'But selective opportunities still exist, particularly in power sector-related industrials.'
