'One Step At A Time': Canada Foreign Minister Anita Anand Says India Ties Will Be Repaired
Last Updated: India-Canada ties hit an all-time low during Justin Trudeau's tenure after he accused India of being involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Days after her telephonic conversation with Dr S Jaishankar, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Thursday (local time) said that Ottawa looks forward to rebuilding its ruptured ties with New Delhi and it is taking 'one step at a time" in that direction, according to a report. Mentioning the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023 – the blame of which was brazenly put on India by then prime minister Justin Trudeau, leading to India-Canada ties hitting an all-time low – Anand said that while the investigation into the case is underway, the Mark Carney government aims to rebuild a partnership with the Modi government. The India-Canada ties suffered a major blow in September 2023, when Trudeau accused India of playing a role in the killing of the Khalistani terrorist, who was a Canadian citizen. He claimed that he had 'credible allegations" of the involvement of Indian government officials in Nijjar's death. India denied the baseless allegations. These tensions led to reciprocal expulsions of diplomats, a freeze on trade negotiations, among other steps. Around 20 months since this diplomatic fallout, the ambassador-level posts in each other's nations still remain vacant. Anand spoke to her Indian counterpart, Jaishankar, on Sunday and discussed 'strengthening Canada-India ties". When asked if she believed that the conversation would lead to the appointment of new high commissioners between the two countries, Anand said that they are taking 'one step at a time". 'We are certainly taking it one step at a time. As I mentioned, the rule of law will never be compromised, and there is an ongoing investigation regarding the case that you mentioned," she said in an interview, while referring to Nijjar's murder, The Globe And Mail reported. 'At the same time, we are looking forward to continuing to build this partnership, and we're looking forward to that as a government – it's not just me. It's part of the process of diversifying our relationships and building relationships around the world," the Foreign Minister added, indicating the country's efforts to diversify trade away from the United States – which has threatened Canada's sovereignty under President Donald Trump. According to Goldy Hyder, president of the Business Council of Canada, India is important to Canada's economic interests. He said that he plans to travel to India in July to set the stage to prepare for a bigger business trade delegation, which could take place either this fall or early next year, The Globe And Mail reported. 'You can't have an Indo-Canadian strategy without the Indo, and at some point in time, a mature democracy dealing with another mature democracy finds a way to deal with difficult situations," he said. Journalist, Wife Consume Poison On Camera Over 'Harassment' By SDM, Two Others In UP
Last Updated: Israr claimed that he had recently published a news report on alleged corruption in the Barkheda nagar panchayat, which he said had caught the attention of the CMO. A local journalist and his wife in Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit posted a video on social media accusing a sub-divisional magistrate, a nagar panchayat chairman and a contractor of harassment before apparently consuming poison on camera on Thursday, police said. According to officers from Barkheda police station, the journalist, Israr, alleged in the video that they were driven to taking the extreme step due to ongoing harassment by Bisalpur sub-divisional magistrate Nagendra Pandey, Barkheda nagar panchayat chairman Shyam Bihari Bhojwal and contractor Moin Hussain. The couple was rushed to the district hospital, where Israr is reportedly out of danger while his wife remains in a critical condition, an officer said. In the video, Israr claimed that he had recently published a news report on alleged corruption in the Barkheda nagar panchayat, which he said had caught the attention of the Chief Minister's Office. Following this, Israr said he began to experience harassment. He alleged Hussain, Bhojwal, and Pandey continuously threatened the family and falsely implicated them in a case. 'We are drinking poison and ending our lives. Yogi ji, we need justice," Israr said in the video. Responding to the viral video, sub-divisional magistrate Pandey told the media that he has directed the Barkheda Station House Officer to investigate the matter. He dismissed the allegations as 'baseless" and claimed 'there is no such issue." Bisalpur Circle Officer Prateek Dahiya told reporters that the police are conducting a thorough investigation from all angles. Meanwhile, Bhojwal, in his statement to the press, said that he has no involvement in the incident. 'I have come to know about the incident, but I have nothing to do with it. There may have been some dispute with the contractor," he said. Contractor Hussain defended himself by claiming that Israr had visited one of his construction sites on 18 May and allegedly demanded Rs 15,000 and threatened to publish a negative news report if his demand was not met. Hussain claimed that Israr used abusive language and issued death threats. He added that he had filed a complaint with the police following the incident. The couple's family members claimed that Israr and his wife were facing continuous harassment. They accused Pandey, Bhojwal and Hussain of issuing threats and framing them in false cases, with the police also allegedly being complicit. The family demanded that a case be registered against the three individuals named in the video. Watch India Pakistan Breaking News on CNN-News18. 'Making My Life Miserable': Canada Landlord On Tenants Flying Khalistani Flag, Skipping Rent
Last Updated: Landlord Raman Kumar said five students moved in October 2024, paid rent till December, but stopped paying the monthly rent and utility bills from January A landlord in Canada's Ontario is facing serious distress after his tenants, alleged supporters of the Khalistan movement, have reportedly not paid rent or utility bills since January this year. The matter was brought to light by independent journalist Nitin Chopra, who shared a video report on social media platform X, including interviews and footage from the property. 'Another Victim Landlord in #Ontario Tenants have not paid rent since Jan 2025, not paying Utilities bill either What a Landlord should do? When can we fix the system ? Enough is Enough!," Chopra wrote in his post. Chopra also shared visuals of the rented property, where a Khalistan flag can be clearly seen tied to a post outside the house. The property owner, Raman Kumar, told Chopra that five students moved into the house in October 2024 and paid rent till December. Since January, however, they have stopped paying the monthly rent, which Kumar says is around 3,300 Canadian dollars, as well as utility bills. 'I'm paying the mortgage, property tax, and insurance out of my own pocket," Kumar said. 'This is putting me under extreme mental stress. I myself live in a rented house and have my own expenses. These tenants are making my life miserable." Kumar also claimed that the Khalistan flag tied outside the house was put up without his permission. 'I am very scared by these kinds of activities, and the neighbourhood is also unhappy," he said. 'Authorities need to intervene. We've always lived peacefully as a community, and this is creating unnecessary tensions." Kumar alleged that while he rented the home to five people, he believes more individuals are living there. 'I can't give the exact number, but there are a lot of people coming and going," he added. The landlord further claimed the tenants have been disturbing the neighbourhood, especially at night, and local residents have lodged complaints. Although Kumar has taken legal steps to address the situation, he said the process is slow. 'I've started legal proceedings, but it will take time," he noted. Gujarat Woman Alleges Sexual Abuse By HIV+ Husband, Seeks Help From 181 Helpline
Last Updated: The woman, who has been married for over 10 years now and has a 8-year-old child, told counsellors that her husband had been forcing her into sexual relations despite having HIV. In a troubling case from Gujarat, a woman in Ahmedabad has reached out to the state's 'Abhayam 181' women's helpline, alleging relentless physical and mental abuse by her husband. According to her, her husband turned violent and coercive towards her after being diagnosed HIV positive two years ago. The woman, who has been married for over 10 years now and is the mother of an 8-year-old child, told counsellors that her husband had been forcing her into sexual relations despite having HIV. She alleged that each time she resisted, she was beaten and threatened with being thrown out of the house. According to her statement, the situation deteriorated after her husband's HIV diagnosis. She claims he began exhibiting erratic behaviour, sank into drug addiction, and became increasingly abusive. When she tried to warn him that another pregnancy could pose serious health risks to them and the child, he dismissed her concerns with threats and aggression. Abhayam 181 is a helpline launched by the Gujarat government to support women in distress. Recounting the woman's ordeal, a counsellor from the Abhayam service said that the woman had supported her husband through his illness, hoping their family would remain intact. But when he attempted to force her out of the house, she feared for her and her child's safety and reached out to the helpline. The counselling team facilitated a session with both the woman and her husband, during which they educated the couple about the legal rights of women, the importance of consent in marital relationships, and the consequences of abuse. While the woman has chosen not to file a formal police complaint for now, she has been assured that legal recourse remains open should the harassment continue. In what appears to be a temporary resolution, the husband reportedly acknowledged his actions and promised to change. However, experts caution that without sustained support or legal intervention, such cases often risk relapse into patterns of abuse. Watch India Pakistan Breaking News on CNN-News18.
