Three, including two minors, from TN's Karur killed in Kolkata hotel fire
KARUR: 14 people, including an elderly man and two minors from Karur district in Tamil Nadu, were killed in a fire accident at a hotel in Kolkata on Tuesday night.
According to police, the deceased from Karur were identified as Muthukrishnan (61), P Diya (10), and P Rithan (3), all from Uppidamangalam in Karur district.
Police said that Prabhu (40), an entrepreneur dealing in Aloe Vera by-products across the country, had been on a tour in Kolkata since April 17, along with his father-in-law Muthukrishnan, daughter Diya, son Rithan, and wife P Mathumitha. The family had been staying at the Rituraj Hotel on Madanmohan Street in the city's Burrabazar area.
At the time of the incident, Prabhu and his wife had stepped out of the hotel to buy dinner, while the others remained in their room.
All 14 victims, including the three from Karur, were unable to escape and died in the blaze, police sources said.
When contacted, Prabhu told

that they had planned to check out of the hotel after dinner on April 29, Tuesday.
'We left Tiruchy on April 17, 2025, and toured various places across the state. We had been staying at the hotel for the past two days. We had already packed our luggage and were about to check out after dinner. My wife and I went downstairs to get food. Within a few minutes, everything was over. As there was no proper emergency exit, nobody could escape from the hotel,' he said.
District Collector M Thangavel spoke to Prabhu and assured him of assistance bringing the bodies back to Karur, Prabhu added

Newly-wed dies in tragic fall while boarding train to Goa at Secunderabad
HYDERABAD: A 28-year-old private employee, Vurugonda Sai, died after accidentally falling between a moving train and the platform at Secunderabad Railway Station on Friday. Sai, who had married Battula Maduri, a nurse, just three months ago on March 12, was on his way to Goa with his wife and three family friends. According to a complaint lodged by his wife, the group arrived at Platform No. 9 around 9.30 am to board the Vasco-Da-Gama Express. Around 10.30 am, Sai reportedly slipped while attempting to board the moving train and fell between the platform and the train, sustaining severe injuries. He was immediately rushed to Yashoda Hospital but succumbed during treatment. During the investigation, Government Railway Police (GRP) officials said eyewitnesses and platform vendors reported that Sai had been boarding and deboarding the train multiple times before the accident. 'He boarded and got off the train at least three times before slipping during his final attempt,' a GRP official told TNIE.

Maoist's family appeals for his body to perform final rites in Andhra's Eluru district
RAJAMAHENDRAVARAM: The family of top CPI (Maoist) leader Thentu Lakshminasimha Chalam, alias Sudhakar, who was killed in an encounter in the Indravati National Park in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, has appealed to the State and Central governments to hand over his body to conduct his last rites in their native village of Satyavolu in Pedapadu mandal, Eluru district. Sudhakar (66), originally hailed from Vizianagaram district, but his father Ramakrishna Naidu, belonging to the BC community, migrated to Pragadavaram in the erstwhile West Godavari district in 1970 before settling in Satyavolu. Speaking to TNIE, Sudhakar's elder brother Anandarao (75) and sister-in-law Satyavati expressed a deep desire to give him a proper farewell. 'Sudhakar was a brilliant man. He chose his own path and left home in 1983. We last met him around 30 years ago in Rajamahendravaram Central Jail,' said Satyavati. She said police have been visiting their home for the past 24 hours. Recalling Sudhakar's life, she said he could have lived a peaceful life had he married his cousin in Vizianagaram. 'His father even allotted him an acre of land. But fate took a different turn,' she said. Sudhakar's sisters are now settled in Vizianagaram and Vizag. The family lost contact with him for decades after he joined the Maoist movement. The second brother, who settled in Guntur, passed away recently. Sudhakar, who carried a bounty of Rs 1 crore, was elevated to the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee in 2021.

BENGALURU: With 11 RCB fans dead and 64 injured in Wednesday's stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium, informed sources told TNIE on condition of anonymity that Bengaluru City Police (BCP) was literally hijacked by the premier cricketing club and people 'at the helm of affairs' in the state. The BCP has come under tremendous flak for the shoddy and unprofessional handling of the crowd that converged outside the stadium, and the stampede that followed and led to 11 casualties -- all young people in the prime of their lives, including two minors. An extremely tragic and unprecedented event could have been averted if the government and police had exercised caution and planned the celebration later, in consultation and coordination with all agencies and stakeholders concerned, and after the public frenzy had come down. 'Where was the question of permission for the stadium event? RCB had already announced the victory celebration on social media early Wednesday morning, and followed it up with more posts. People were all charged up and the government was keen on the event, in keeping with public sentiment. They simply failed to anticipate the impending catastrophe, despite cautionary advice,' the sources added. 'A senior police officer cautioned those at the helm of affairs on Wednesday after RCB, from their handle @RCBTweets at 7:01am posted on microblogging platform 'X', announcing a victory parade in Bengaluru. He suggested a delayed and better planned event on Sunday but it was overlooked. Police then refused permission for the open bus victory parade but allowed the stadium event under pressure. They should have asserted and put their foot down,' said placed sources. Narrating the buildup of events -- from RCB's post on X early on Wednesday on the Bengaluru celebrations, to the meeting with political leadership to discuss the planning of the event, to the stampede -- sources said, without naming anybody, that the government 'failed to gauge the previous evening's frenzy in the city after RCB won IPL 2025'. Why did the police, caught between RCB and their political bosses, throw their hands up?
