Water supply to stabilise soon – Shahelmey

PUTATAN (July 18): Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya expressed confidence that the water supply in Kota Kinabalu, Putatan and surrounding areas will stabilise with the completion of phase two of the Telibong 2 water project.
He said the ongoing challenges, including ageing infrastructure, burst pipes and water theft, are being addressed, and assured that water supply recovery will show significant improvement by the end of this month — about two weeks from now.
'I urge the public not to make baseless assumptions regarding water disruptions. While legitimate concerns are valid and should be voiced, creating AI-generated videos that attack the government tarnishes the image of our administration and damages the state's reputation,' he said.
Shahelmey emphasised that the water supply issue is not new but stems from legacy problems due to delayed implementation of water development projects in Sabah.
He was speaking after receiving complaints about water supply disruptions affecting hotels and shopping malls in Kota Kinabalu and Putatan.
'Yes, I received complaints from hotel operators in Kota Kinabalu two weeks ago about low water pressure at certain times of the day. The Water Department informed me that this was due to high demand and some technical faults which caused delays in restoration,' he said.
However, he noted improvements in the past few days.
In the morning today, hotel operators confirmed that water pressure was gradually returning to normal.
Shahelmey attributed this to the recent completion of the second phase of the Telibong 2 project, which was finished two days ago.
'Testing, flushing and commissioning began on Wednesday afternoon, and by Thursday evening, some water had already reached Inanam. This signals improvements in treated water supply for northern Kota Kinabalu, and eventually to Kota Kinabalu and Putatan,' he said.
He also highlighted a critical situation in Putatan on Monday due to pipe bursts near Servay Putatan and minor technical issues in the distribution network.
'I was quite disappointed because the new UWSS project in Kasigui, with a five million-litre daily capacity, is already operational and producing three to four million litres daily. Yet, this additional supply wasn't reaching consumers,' he said.
He has since instructed the Water Department to identify and resolve the technical issues and implement recovery plans. He noted that water pressure in greater Putatan has started to improve since yesterday evening.
'I hope this trend continues and becomes more consistent. Once Telibong 2 phase two is fully completed, the water supply should be sufficient for users in Kota Kinabalu, Putatan and Penampang,' he said.
Shahelmey said the technical issues in Kasigui are mainly related to distribution programming, which is currently being resolved and expected to be completed soon.
Once the Telibong 2 interconnection pipeline is completed, water will be directed to Inanam and northern parts of Kota Kinabalu, such as Sepanggar. Water previously supplied from Moyog and Kasigui to those areas will instead be redirected to Kota Kinabalu and Putatan, ensuring adequate supply across the region.
He also noted that the Water Department has water tankers on standby to supply affected areas in the event of pressure drops.
Shahelmey made these remarks after presenting contributions to top STPM 2024 students in the Putatan parliamentary constituency at the Pan Borneo Hotel in Putatan today.
He also presented I-Boards to six secondary schools: SMK Putatan, SMK Tansau, SMK Petagas, SMK Stella Maris, SM La Salle and SMK Pulau Gaya.

Liberal Democratic Party urges Shahelmey to fix multiple woes

Published on: Friday, July 25, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 25, 2025 Text Size: Chin (left) accompanied by several supreme council members, recently paid a courtesy visit to Shahelmey (right) to raise concerns over persistent disruptions that continue to burden rural and suburban communities. Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) called on the Sabah Ministry of Works to urgently address long-standing infrastructure problems affecting the State, particularly water supply, electricity and road conditions. LDP President Datuk Chin Su Phin, accompanied by several supreme council members, recently paid a courtesy visit to State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, who is also Deputy Chief Minister iii, to raise concerns over persistent disruptions that continue to burden rural and suburban communities. 'Access to clean water, stable electricity and safe roads are fundamental needs of the people. These issues should not be hindering Sabah's development or burdening its citizens,' Chin said during the meeting. During the dialogue, the party proposed several key suggestions, including: Water Supply: Accelerate the construction and repair of dams and distribution systems, while improving water management to reduce leakage and prevent illegal tapping. Electricity: Upgrade infrastructure to ensure greater grid stability, especially in industrial and densely populated areas, in order to prevent frequent blackouts that impact both livelihoods and investor confidence. Road Infrastructure: Implement a scheduled maintenance system and prioritise upgrading roads that connect rural communities to ensure safer and more efficient transportation and logistics. Shahelmy welcomed the constructive input from LDP and expressed appreciation for the party's commitment to addressing the people's concerns. He assured that the Ministry will review the recommendations and continue engaging stakeholders for better solutions. Chin reaffirmed LDP's role as a bridge between the Government and the people, emphasising the party's commitment to championing issues that affect the daily lives of Sabahans. 'LDP will continue to fight for much bigger funding from the Federal Government to solve Sabahans' water and road woes. 'At the same time, we will continue go to the ground, listen to the people and push for practical and fair infrastructure development that truly benefits all Sabahans,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabahans ‘numb' over delays in infrastructure projects, says Warisan MP

Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis criticised contractors and lobbyists for contributing to the chronic delays in completing infrastructure projects in Sabah. KUALA LUMPUR : Sabahans have become desensitised to infrastructure delays after years of seeing numerous projects stalled or left incomplete, a Warisan MP said today. Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis (Warisan-Kota Belud) criticised contractors and lobbyists for contributing to the chronic delays, stating that many aggressively lobbied for projects they were not capable of executing. 'My message to the contractors and lobbyists is, if you want to submit tenders, be honest about your capacity. 'If you think you can't handle the project, don't lobby for it. Do not create more problems for others,' she said when debating the 2025 Auditor-General's Report Series 2 in the Dewan Rakyat. Last month, Sabah works minister Shahelmey Yahya said physical progress on Package 20 of the Pan Borneo Highway project in Sabah remained low at just 1.6% despite letters of acceptance having been issued eight months ago. In a Bernama report, Shahelmy, who is also the state's deputy chief minister III, attributed the delay to ongoing land and property assessment processes. Isnaraissah also raised concerns over the multiple layers of subcontracting in federal infrastructure projects, saying the system left no actual 'doers' on the ground in Sabah. 'The ones awarded the project hire subcontractors, who in turn hire other subcontractors. In the end, no one takes responsibility and the work doesn't get done,' she said. She questioned the works ministry's decision to use the selected pre-qualified open tender procurement system for Phase 1B of the Pan Borneo Highway project, an issue which was also flagged in the Auditor-General's Report Series 2. The report, tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, said open tenders were more suitable to ensure accountability and transparency in the procurement process.

Tribal uprising grows as thousands reject Pakistan's failed military solutions in Waziristan and Mohmand

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa [Pakistan], July 19 (ANI): Thousands of people across Mohmand, North Waziristan, and South Waziristan took to the streets on Friday in large-scale peace rallies, rejecting any fresh military operations and warning against further displacement of local communities, Dawn News reported. In Mohmand district's Mian Mandi Bazaar (Halimzai tehsil), a massive rally brought together tribal elders, political leaders, and civil society members under one voice. Leaders from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Awami National Party (ANP), and Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) joined hands to declare that the state had failed to deliver peace in the tribal belt, Dawn News reported. 'We pay taxes and abide by the law. All we ask for is peace in our homeland,' said local JI leader Firdous Safi. The killing of Maulana Khan Zeb, a respected voice for tribal rights and peace, was widely condemned. In North Waziristan, the Utmanzai Jirga Aman Pasoon held a demonstration in Miramshah, reiterating their opposition to any new military campaign. Spokesperson Mufti Baitullah stated that past operations like Zarb-i-Azb had not resolved the region's issues. 'We won't allow another military operation,' he said. The jirga demanded the release of elder Malik Akbar Khan, imprisoned for eight months, calling it essential for rebuilding trust with the government, Dawn News noted. Baitullah also announced the next protest would be held in Dattakhel, where residents have endured an 11-day curfew, severely restricting movement and livelihoods. Meanwhile, in Lower South Waziristan, an eight-day sit-in at Wana Bypass Chowk ended after successful negotiations between protest leaders and government officials. According to Dawn News, the district administration agreed to reopen the Angoor Adda border crossing, address law and order concerns, and affirm tribal ownership of local mineral resources. South Waziristan Chamber of Commerce president Saifur Rehman Wazir said the prolonged closure of Angoor Adda had devastated trade. 'Markets have collapsed, and traders suffered losses worth billions,' he stated. As Dawn News highlighted, these peaceful yet defiant demonstrations underscore widespread frustration and demand for peace, rights, and dignity across the tribal districts. (ANI)
