MyKasih puts pressure on Sabah retailers - SAPP

Borneo Post26-05-2025

Alex Soon
TAWAU (May 26): The federal government's MyKasih aid programme, while aimed at helping Low-income groups ease their living costs, has unintentionally increased the operational pressure on Sabah's local small and medium enterprises (SMEs), especially retailers, due to restrictions on product categories and merchant qualifications.
Pointing this out in a statement on Monday, Alex Soon, Supreme Councillor Tawau Sri Tanjong CLC Chairman, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), said under the programme, except for eggs, fresh agricultural products such as vegetables, fruits, and meat cannot be purchased using the subsidy.
Each eligible household is entitiled for RM50 to RM200 per month allowance, and the programme will continue until the end of this year.
Its impact is wide-ranging and long-term.
More critically, Alex said only large retail chains are equipped with the systems required to support the MyKad cashless credit system. The vast majority of local SMEs are unable to participate.
'This has directly caused small retailers to lose customers and suffer sharp drops in sales. Many grocery shops are unable to sell even basic goods like rice, cooking oil, and milk for an entire month, leading to severe inventory backlogs,' he said.
Despite this, he said the Sabah Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship (MIDE) has yet to respond or propose any solution, and has instead been making frequent official overseas visits. This has triggered concern and dissatisfaction within the industry.
While the MyKasih programme has indeed benefitted vulnerable groups, he said its implementation has also eroded the market share of local SMEs and disrupted the existing supply chain ecosystem.
'This kind of arrangement livens up already-thriving hypermarkets, while marginalising small retailers.'
Alex said MIDE must urgently face this issue and coordinate with the relevant federal agencies to ensure SMEs are not excluded from aid policies. At the same time, supporting measures must be put in place to ease market imbalance, maintain the diversity and resilience of the local economic cosystem, and prevent local SMEs from being completely eliminated or disappearing in this wave.

Transport Ministry launches 13 new bus routes in Kedah

ALOR SETAR: Thirteen stage bus routes have begun phased operations in Kedah from June 1,as part of the Transport Ministry's stage bus services transformation programme. The ministry said the programme is a federal government initiative under Budget 2024, with an allocation of RM80mil for a five-year service period, or RM16mil per year. "This initiative is part of efforts to improve the quality of stage bus services in Alor Setar and other towns, including Sungai Petani, Jitra, Kuala Kedah, Kuala Nerang, and Pendang. " Kota Setar services will operate at a frequency of every 30 minutes on urban routes and between 60 and 90 minutes on inter-district routes. The routes have been designed to connect major destinations around Alor Setar, such as Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Pekan Rabu, Darul Aman Stadium, Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, and the Kuala Kedah Jetty," it said in a statement on Thursday (June 5). The routes are K10 Shahab Perdana-Kuala Kedah; K20 Shahab Perdana-Jitra; K30 Shahab Perdana-Kuala Nerang; K40 Shahab Perdana-Pendang via Simpang Empat; K41 Shahab Perdana-Pendang via Kota Sarang Semut; K50 Shahab Perdana-Sungai Petani; K51 Sungai Petani-Tanjung Dawai; K52 Sungai Petani-Pantai Merdeka; K60 Sungai Petani-Bandar Baharu; K61 Sungai Petani-Taman Kelisa; K62 Sungai Petani-Taman Ria Jaya / Taman Batik; K63 Sungai Petani-Bandar Perdana and K100 Alor Setar Feeder. The ministry added that the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad), as the implementing agency of the programme in Kedah, appointed Gopi Travel Tours Sdn Bhd as the network operator for the bus services through an open tender process. "Gopi Travel Tours Sdn Bhd has experience in operating stage bus services under the programme in Seremban. "A total of 48 new buses of 'midi' and low-floor mini types will be used. These new low-floor buses make boarding and alighting easier and are disabled-friendly. They are also equipped with cashless payment systems and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to enhance passenger safety," it said. The government has also introduced a free fare initiative for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and students via the Concession Card. "Registered users can enjoy unlimited rides on Kota Setar services for 30 days at a cost of RM50. "Through this programme, services are expected to ease mobility for approximately 28,000 users per month, encourage the use of public land transport among the local community, and help reduce daily travel costs," it said. – Bernama

Malaysia remains key area for investments in upstream activities, decarbonisation, energy transition

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is expected to remain a key area for investments in the oil and gas sector, particularly in upstream activities, decarbonisation and energy transition projects, according to BMI Country Risk and Industry Research (BMI). In a statement, the Fitch Solutions Group company anticipated that the upstream sector in Asia would remain robust, driving capital expenditure (capex) growth for exploration and production activities. "Despite a lower oil and gas price environment, the majority of capital spending will continue to focus on upstream exploration and production,' it said. According to BMI, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd is expected to maintain a stable capital expenditure of around RM50 billion for 2025, given the investment requirements for several greenfield and brownfield projects through 2025-2027. In the upstream segment, it noted that Petronas plans to ramp up the drilling of development wells, raising the number of wells from 56 in 2024 to 73 wells in 2025. "In 2024, Petronas signed 14 production sharing contracts (PSCs) with local and foreign companies and held equity stakes in certain PSCs,' it said. BMI opined that capital requirements for overseas projects are expected to rise since the company has secured new oil and gas blocks for exploration in Suriname in 2024. "Petronas signed agreements for upstream assets in Angola, Indonesia, Brazil, the UAE and Oman,' it added. In August 2024, Petronas, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and UK-based Storegga signed a joint study and development agreement to explore the construction of carbon capture and storage opportunities in the Penyu Basin located in Peninsular Malaysia. The agreement covers investments to store five million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year by 2030, including CO2 shipping and logistics. "In the long term, Petronas will need to allocate higher capex for the development of Indonesia's Masela liquefied natural gas project, in which Petronas holds a 15 per cent equity stake,' BMI added. - Bernama
