After an underwhelming opening week of Dana White's Contender Series, the second week opened with a dominant performance by Ramiro Jimenez.
Jimenez (11-0) came out of the gate on fire in his featherweight bout with Tommy Cuozzi Jr. (8-1) at DWCS 78 on Tuesday at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, badly hurting his opponent multiple times.
Cuozzi Jr. did his best to hand tough from the onslaught poured on by Jimenez, but eventually referee Herb Dean saw enough and halted it at the 2:53 mark of Round 1.

UFC CEO Dana White along with matchmakers Mick Maynard and Sean Shelby clapped on as Jimenez was announced the winner, and the 26-year-old shook hands with all them as he left the octagon as he looks to receive his UFC contract.
"It was hard at the beginning being around this place at this stage," Jimenez said in his post-fight interview with Heidi Androl. "It's been a long time coming. ... I want to say thank you to everybody."

Bryan Battle released from UFC roster after back-to-back weight misses

Bryan Battle's lack of discipline on the scale has been met with consequences in the form of a UFC release. UFC officials verified to MMA Junkie on Wednesday that "The Ultimate Fighter 29" winner Battle (12-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) has parted ways with the company after missing weight for the second consecutive fight at UFC 319. first reported the news. After failing to hit the mark in the welterweight division against Randy Brown in December, Battle was forced up to middleweight. He could not make it work there, either, registering at 190 pounds for a matchup with Nursulton Ruziboev, which was ultimately canceled. The 30-year-old also had another previous weigh-in infraction at UFC on ABC 4 in May 2013, missing by two pounds before scoring a 14-second knockout win. Battle is unbeaten in his pat five octagon appearances dating back December 2022, but he could not get win as consistently on the scale, and it cost him a place on the roster.

Johnny Walker ahead of UFC Shanghai: Xtreme Couture 'one of the best moves for my career'

Johnny Walker believes his training camp for UFC Fight Night 257 was the best of his career. According to Walker (21-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC), that's largely due to his recent move to Las Vegas, where he started training at Xtreme Couture with head coach Eric Nicksick. Walker is winless in his past three fights and will look to turn things around when he takes on rising light heavyweight contender Zhang Mingyang (19-6 MMA, 3-0 UFC) in Saturday's headliner at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. "It was a very good move, one of the best moves I did for my career," Walker told MMA Junkie Radio. "Not just because of Xtreme but because of the UFC Performance Institute. Of course, Eric is an amazing coach. He's been an amazing add to my career. A lot of big guys there to train (with). "Performance Institute have breakfast, lunch, dinner, physiotherapy, recovery, strength and conditioning, so everything I need to achieve the next level. I'm very happy. That was my best training camp that I did, and I just feel very excited and amazing." Light heavyweight has seen numerous champions in the past several years, which gets Walker excited. Newly crowned champ Magomed Ankalaev will run things back with Alex Pereira in the UFC 320 headliner on Oct. 4. "The division is very interesting because a few guys have potential to be champion," Walker said. "This is very interesting because it makes everybody excited to keep moving forward, always getting the challenge, and try to get the belt. I have a few guys here that believe they're going to be the champion. "They don't just believe. They actually have a big chance to become champion. That's exciting because you don't even know by the end of the year who's going to be holding that belt, so that's what's exciting about this division because anyone has the chance."

Brian Ortega hopes to 'bang it out' with Aljamain Sterling at UFC Shanghai

Brian Ortega hopes for a standup war against Aljamain Sterling at UFC Fight Night 257. Former two-time UFC featherweight title challenger Ortega (16-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) takes on Sterling (24-5 MMA, 16-5 UFC) in Saturday's five-round co-main event at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. After losing to Diego Lopes in his most recent outing at UFC 306 this past September, Ortega said he needed to make some moves to get better. So what's changed? "Just hired one new coach," Ortega told MMA Junkie. "In this sport, you can't get too excited and try to get better at everything because it's just impossible, but it was getting my life better. That's always been a thing for me. It's always just better, my life outside of the gym. So we were doing that, we were locking in that aspect, and once we locked in there, it was good. We were able to bring the people that needed to be around us and just start working. ... It's striking. "I re-hired someone that we had – not a bad fallout, but we went our own ways and then we had a good conversation about things in the past. We just talked it over and fixed that and patched that. The boxing coach, it was new. We gave him a shot, and I started learning again. I started learning things all over again. My striking has evolved and then talking to the wrestling coach about who should we bring in as partners. We just started bringing in high-level wrestlers, NCAA champs and stuff like that." In a matchup between two elite grapplers, many are salivating at the potential scrambles. However, if it were up to Ortega, the fight wouldn't hit the ground. "If it was my choice, we bang it out," Ortega said. "Simple as that. You see me, I kind of rarely shoot in. I'm not really the guy to shoot in. So, if it was up to me, we would bang it out on our feet and give the fans a hell of a fight. But something's telling me he's going to shoot in. ... He's good at keeping his distance and his range with those kicks, but yeah, it's something that we've trained for. We watch the fights, we study film.
