The Steelers' hideous 2025 throwbacks are somehow not their grossest

USA Today21-07-2025
The simple beauty of the Pittsburgh Steelers is a steadfast grip on tradition. The glory of the team's run through the 1970s established them as an icon, creating outposts at unofficial "Steelers bars" across the globe where the same fans gather each Sunday in the fall. The Terrible Towel preserved Myron Cope's legacy as not only a gravel-voiced chorus that rang across western Pennsylvania but as a fandom innovator.
The franchise has had three presidents in 89 years of existence, all from the Rooney family. Pittsburgh has had three general managers since 1991 and three head coaches since 1969. The team's uniforms are clean and classic enough that the University of Iowa, itself a sigil of throwback football now and until the heat death of the universe, copied them almost wholesale (with permission).
This is all to say, the Steelers persist. That means when it's time to dust off an old school uniform, they have to go all the way back to a time before the Super Bowl existed.
And when you're borrowing from the 1930s, you wind up in a place where stripes were considered a bold and innovative new design.
Let's dispatch the elephant in this room. The jerseys, busy as they may be, are not the problem on their own. But matching them with a yellow helmet that allows little room for contrast was always going to heighten that static. When you add beige pants -- a different color that's not nearly different enough -- things truly begin to look rough. Factor in yellow socks (not beige) and you get the distinct impression the 1930s were a time where post-war rationing was still a thing and mostly applied to pant fabric.
Still, it's a throwback to a different era that ties in plenty of local history from the franchise itself to the great city of Pittsburgh. That's a different time that saw the franchise go 25-71-6 in its first nine seasons, but it's a lovely sentiment.
More importantly, it's not the worst uniforms the Steelers could have dug up. Let us remember, friends, the bumblebee alternates of 2012 through 2016.
Pittsburgh chose the less gross of two options when it came to 1933, eschewing the pre-World War II swarm look for the slimming effect of vertical stripes. It also took advantage of the league's expanded helmet rules to bring back the yellow lids that came with those 30s kits and made a brief comeback in the late 2000s.
So the Steelers will certainly look different for at least one game this fall. And they'll look at least a little bit ugly, too. But they won't look the worst they ever have, because for five straight seasons we got to see Ben Roethlisberger clumsily lope through the backfield before winging touchdown passes like an overfed bumblebee.

Shahar relishing South Shields test

United's second-string were held to a 1-1 draw against their Hull City counterparts in their opening pre-season fixture of the 2025/26 season last weekend and face the Mariners, who compete in the National League North, at the 1st Cloud Arena. Shahar, who was named in a senior matchday squad for the first time during Newcastle United's 2-1 home win against Brentford in April, is one of a handful of Academy products to have trained with Eddie Howe's side, travelling to Austria in the opening weeks of pre-season, and the teenage defender feels he is reaping the benefits of his involvement with the senior squad. The 18-year-old right-back told "I started the first week of pre-season with the first-team and I feel like it's a good way to get into the pre-season flow. Being with the first-team, it gets you fit as fast as possible to be ready for the season. "I've had two games now, one with the first-team and then with the under-21s, drawing against Hull. It was good to get an opening of how my fitness levels are and I feel very good and happy with where everything is going. "To be in and around the first-team is going to benefit me. Training regularly with the squad is going to make me a better player as well as a person." Newcastle's youngsters face the Mariners in a pre-season fixture last season, with teenage winger Johnny Emerson on target in a 1-1 draw for the young Magpies in front of over 1,400 spectators. Shahar, who has captained England at under-18 level, is looking forward to another encounter against senior opposition after featuring in the Magpies' behind-closed-doors win against Carlisle United last month, playing the first-half of a 4-0 win against the Cumbrians. "Playing against men's teams is good as a younger player because that's where you strive to get to," Shahar added. "It's good to get those kinds of different challenges to help my development. "As a younger side playing against senior opposition, we'll have to be smart (against South Shields) in the way we play as we can't always go toe-to-toe with them due to their physicality but it will show the level we're at and how we've done during pre-season. It will be a good test." Kyle Crossley, who joined South Shields from United last summer after a four-year spell at Newcastle's Academy, will not feature in Sunday's friendly as the 21-year-old winger suffered a multi ligament injury after colliding with an opposition player during a pre-season friendly against Carlisle. Shahar offered sympathy to his former teammate, along with the Magpies' second-string squad, ahead of what will be a prolonged period on the sidelines. He added: "I heard the news and I was devastated for Kyle. He's a great lad and was a good character around the training ground whilst he was at the Academy. It's disappointing for him and, hopefully, we put on a good game for him. "It's part of football but it's never nice to sustain a big injury like that so all the lads were sorry for him and we had a chat about how good of a person he is." After multiple trades, Pirates GM Ben Cherington offers insight into deadline strategy

The Pirates were relatively busy during the MLB trade deadline, trading six players, including Ke'Bryan Hayes, David Bednar, Bailey Falter, Adam Frazier, Caleb Ferguson, and Taylor Rogers. Three of the six players dealt to other clubs were signed through next season and beyond. Cherington told reporters following the 6 p.m. deadline that the team's goal was to add younger talent, create opportunities for younger players, and give themselves payroll flexibility. "We wanted to try to accomplish parts of all three, and we believe we did," Cherington said. Perhaps the most talked about move leading up to the deadline was whether or not the Pirates would trade closing pitcher and Pittsburgh native David Bednar. Ultimately, the Pirates traded Bednar to the New York Yankees in exchange for three prospects. The prospects are Rafael Flores, Edgleen Perez, and Brian Sanchez. According to Cherington, the Pirates had the chance to acquire higher-ranked prospects from New York, but what they ended up getting was the best return. "We had access to players who were ranked higher," he said. "We did, and we preferred this package. It was our estimation and our opinion that this was not just a really strong collection of talent to get for Bednar but also the best one that we had access to in this market." There wasn't much chatter surrounding Pirates pitcher Bailey Falter in the lead-up to the deadline, but minutes before the 6 p.m. deadline arrived, the Pirates announced that Falter had been traded to the Kansas City Royals for a pair of prospects. In exchange for Falter, the Pirates received first baseman Callan Moss and relief pitcher Evan Sisk. The Pirates currently have multiple pitching prospects in Triple-A, including Bubba Chandler, one of the highest-ranked prospects in the MLB. "As we look towards that period of time in August, September, we're trying to set guys up towards going into 2026," Cherington said. "We felt the combination of players we got back and the opportunity it opened up for others made sense." Even with the flurry of moves in the lead-up and at the deadline, Cherington said that the team's roster movement isn't over. He pointed toward the offseason as the next chance for the Pirates to try to improve in 2026. "Certainly, we're not finished," Cherington said. "There's a lot more work to be done, and right now we'll turn our attention to the games on the field and take advantage of every day to help players get better. Then, we'll pick up the player acquisition part of it in November and keep that work going."
