Western Wall in Jerusalem painted with anti-war message

The Hindu3 days ago
The Western Wall in Jerusalem on Monday (August 11, 2025) was painted with graffiti condemning Israel's ongoing war in Gaza, authorities said, triggering widespread condemnation from religious leaders and politicians.
'There is a holocaust in Gaza' was graffitied in Hebrew on the southern portion of the wall, the holiest site where Jews are allowed to pray, located in the Israeli-annexed Old City of Jerusalem.
A similar message was also written on the wall of the Great Synagogue, elsewhere in the city.
Israeli police said a 27-year-old suspect had been arrested and would appear in court later on Monday (August 11, 2025), having requested an extension for his detention, without disclosing his identity.
The incident sparked immediate outrage in Israel, with the Western Wall's Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch calling it a 'desecration'.
'A holy place is not a place to express protests... The police must investigate this action, track down the criminals responsible for the desecration and bring them to justice,' Mr. Rabinovitch said in a statement.
The office in charge of the site's management said that the graffiti was scrubbed off in the morning.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who oversees Israel's law enforcement agencies, vowed that the police would act 'with lightning speed'.
Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich also weighed in, saying the perpetrators 'forgot what it means to be Jewish'.
Sharp condemnation also came from the opposition. Former defence minister Benny Gantz, now an opposition leader, called it 'a crime against the entire Jewish people'.
The Western Wall lies in the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem, which Israeli forces captured during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

'If America pulls the plug on Israel, God will...': Lindsey Graham's speech viral; he says he's tired of the word 'genocide' because...

Senator Lindsey Graham said God will not forgive US if US does not support Israel. US senator Lindsey Graham delivered a uniquely pro-Israel speech as he was addressing the Republican Party's evangelical supporters in South Carolina, where he said God will pull the plug on the United States if the US pulls the plug on Israel. "Israel is in a fight for their lives. Our friends in Israel are surrounded by people who would kill them all if they could. I am tired of the word genocide. Let me tell you about genocide," the US senator said before diving into a strong defence of Israel. "If Israel wanted to commit genocide, they could. They have the capability to do that. They choose not to. Hamas, they would commit genocide in thirty seconds. They just can't. That's the big difference, folks. To people in my party: I'm tired of this crap. Israel is our friend. They're the most reliable friend we have in the Mideast," Graham said. "They're a democracy surrounded by people who would cut their throats if they could. This is not a hard choice if you are an American. This is not a hard choice if you are a Christian. A word of warning: If America pulls the plug in Israel, God will pull the plug on us. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo And we are not going to let that happen," the senator said. As Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans a broader offensive in the Gaza Strip, he said the Palestinians would be allowed to leave before the broader offensive begins. "We are not pushing them out, but we are allowing them to leave," Netanyahu said. "Give them the opportunity to leave, first of all, combat zones, and generally to leave the territory, if they want," he said, citing refugee outflows during wars in Syria, Ukraine and Afghanistan. Trump may visit Israel next month, contingent on progress in negotiations with Hamas over a ceasefire and hostage release deal, the Ynet news site reported Thursday, citing American and Israeli officials. 'The president will visit Britain in September, and it's possible he will stop in Israel, but it's not certain and not finalized,' a US official tells Ynet.

Middle east tensions: Netanyahu's 'greater Israel' comments spark criticism; Arab nations slam 'delusional claims'

Arab nations have critised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over remarks apparently endorsing the idea of an expanded 'Greater Israel', warning that such comments threaten their sovereignty at a particularly volatile moment for the Middle East. The term refers to a biblical interpretation of Israel's borders during the reign of King Solomon, stretching beyond the current Palestinian territories of Gaza and the occupied West Bank to include parts of present-day Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Ultra-nationalist Israelis have called for these areas to be occupied. When asked on Tuesday by i24NEWS interviewer Sharon Gal whether he supported such a 'vision' for a Greater Israel, Netanyahu replied 'absolutely', adding, 'If you ask me what I think, we're there.' He then spoke about the founding of Israel and the 'great mission' of ensuring its survival. Neighbouring Jordan condemned the comments on Wednesday as a 'dangerous and provocative escalation' and 'a threat to the sovereignty of states'. A spokesman for its foreign ministry rejected what he called Netanyahu's 'inflammatory' rhetoric and 'delusional claims'. Egypt had also 'requested clarification on this matter', describing it as amounting to a 'rejection of the option of peace in the region'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The remarks come amid a 22-month war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, which has repeatedly spilled over into the wider region, fuelling tensions and drawing frequent Arab condemnation. On Thursday, Iraq's foreign ministry said Netanyahu's words showed Israel's 'expansionist ambitions' and were 'a clear provocation to the sovereignty of countries'. Gaza mediator Qatar also condemned the comments, calling them 'absurd' and 'inflammatory'. The suggestion of an enlarged Israel comes as far-right members of Netanyahu's cabinet press for the conquest of Gaza and the annexation of the West Bank, where the government recently approved a wave of new settlements deemed illegal under international law. Saudi Arabia on Wednesday voiced 'its total rejection of the ideas and plans for colonisation and expansion adopted by the Israeli occupation authorities', reaffirming 'the historical and legal right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state'. In February, Netanyahu caused anger among Arab states when, in a television interview, he suggested a Palestinian state could be set up on Saudi land. During Tuesday's interview, he also renewed calls to 'allow' Palestinians to leave Gaza, telling i24NEWS, 'We are not pushing them out, but we are allowing them to leave.' Previous suggestions to resettle Gazans outside the war-ravaged territory, including from US president Donald Trump, have sparked fears of displacement among Palestinians and drawn condemnation from the international community.
