CM Mann introduces reward policy for Punjab Police as part of anti-drug campaign
Addressing the gathering at the state-level function to mark 79th Independence Day here at Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium in Fardikot, CM Mann said that a first-time reward policy has been started in Punjab Police to felicitate cops performing well in the war against drugs. Under this policy, Rs 1.20 lakh will be given to the officers who recover more than one kilogram of heroin.
Mann said that the recruitment and promotions in the Punjab Police have been streamlined to enhance the manpower in force. "The government had created 1,600 new police posts to address promotion issues and strengthen the force," he said.
Mann said that, for the first time, an anti-drug syllabus has been introduced in the schools of the state to make students aware of the scourge of drugs, adding that mega PTMs have been organised in the schools in which 20 lakh parents and students have participated.
He said that previous governments patronised drug mafias, causing widespread addiction, adding that his government has launched a crackdown against drugs in the form of Yudh Nasheyan Virudh 'War Against Drugs'.
Mann said that the drug supply network has almost been dismantled, drug dealers are being dealt with strictly, and bulldozers have razed their properties, adding that leaders involved in the drug trade have been sent to jail, defence committees have been formed in towns and villages and youth.
He said that it is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction that this crusade has been transformed into a mass movement, and villages are passing resolutions declaring themselves drug-free. He said that an anti-drone system has been deployed along the 553-km Punjab-Pakistan border, adding that Punjab has become the first state to take this initiative.
He said that Punjab was leading the country in casualties due to road accidents, after which the Sadak Surakhya Force was formed in the state. He said that the Road Safety Force (SSF) has significantly reduced road accidents by 48 per cent as per a study of the Government of India, adding that they have provided 144 modern vehicles.
To recognise the sacrifices by the brave soldiers and cops who sacrificed their lives to protect the unity and integrity of the nation, the state government provides financial assistance of one crore rupees to their families.
He said that the state government has fulfilled many guarantees during the last three and a half years.

National level agitation in support of evacuees: CPM
VR Puram (ASR District): CPI (M) national leadership has announced that they will fight at a national-level to address the problems of those displaced and evacuees by the Polavaram project. CPI (M) General Secretary MA Baby, Rajya Sabha floor leader John Brittas, and other party state leaders, including K Lokanadham, Thulasidas, and Balaram, visited the project's submergence areas in Chintoor, VR Puram, and Yetapaka mandals of Alluri Sitarama Raju district on Sunday. The affected residents presented petitions to the CPI (M) national leaders, detailing their struggles. The leaders assured them that their hardships would be brought to the country's attention at the national level. A public meeting was held at Ramavaram in the VR Puram mandal, chaired by local party leader Puli Bujji. Speaking at the meeting, Baby questioned why the state government, which is planning to build a capital at a cost of thousands of crores, is failing to resolve the issues of the Polavaram evacuees. He criticised the BJP, TDP, and YSRCP governments for their 'miserable failure' in fulfilling promises made to the displaced. Baby highlighted that according to the 2013 Land Acquisition Act, the displaced people should be provided with a dignified life and colonies with improved infrastructure. However, he stated that the ground reality is completely different. He expressed his dismay that residents are forced to live under tarpaulins as the roofs of their new homes leak just four years after construction. He also said that while the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Polavaram national project was valued at Rs 55,000 crore, the central government has only released Rs 2,200 crore. Of this, only Rs 7,000 crore were spent on rehabilitation, and Baby alleged that there were commissions and corruption involved. He demanded an investigation and legal action against those responsible. He also called for skill training and employment opportunities for the displaced and compensation of Rs 20 lakh per acre for their land. He urged party members to fight for these demands. John Brittas, CPM's Rajya Sabha floor leader, said hewas 'stunned' by the conditions in the Polavaram rehabilitation colonies, which lacked even basic facilities. He questioned why MPs from Andhra Pradesh representing the TDP and YSRCP are not raising these issues in Parliament. He advised the AP MPs to visit the rehabilitation colonies built in Kerala, where displaced people were provided with education, health, transport, and employment opportunities. He condemned the attempt to complete the Polavaram project without providing a proper rehabilitation package, describing it as a conspiracy to force the displaced residents to leave by submerging their areas. Brittas affirmed that the CPI (M) would raise the voice of the Polavaram displaced in Parliament. Central Committee member K Lokanadham stated that Polavaram is not just a project, but also the government's responsibility to rehabilitate those who sacrificed their land. He alleged irregularities in the contour calculations made by officials in Ramavaram, noting that of the 279 houses in the village, only the 166 on one side of the road were notified for displacement. He questioned whether the houses on the other side of the road would not also be submerged. Boppena Kiran, CPI (M) district secretary of Rampachodavaram, expressed hisgratitude that the CPI (M) has recognised the struggles of the Polavaram displaced as a national issue. After Nagarathpete fire, Karnataka DyCM orders crackdown on unsafe, illegal buildings
BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday directed officials to identify unsafe and unscientifically built structures in Bengaluru, issue notices to negligent owners and file criminal cases against them. Shivakumar visited Rajanna Lane in Nagarathpete, where five people, including two children, died in a fire mishap due to a suspected short-circuit in a four-storey building that was constructed in violation of fire safety norms. After inspecting the spot with BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, and other officials, he told the media that many buildings in the city were being constructed beyond permitted limits, making them unfit for habitation. 'In places meant for two or three floors, people have built eight or 10. Such unsafe structures pose risks,' he said. The Deputy CM added that demolitions would not happen immediately, but owners must strengthen weak buildings without delay. 'If they fail to do so, strict action will follow. No permissions will be given in future for such unsafe constructions,' he warned. He announced that the government would give Rs 5 lakh compensation to the families of the deceased. 70 per cent of buildings are illegal Asked about illegal constructions in the city, Shivakumar said, 'Around 70 per cent of buildings in Bengaluru are illegal. In new BDA layouts, builders are putting up more floors than permitted. The Supreme Court has now ruled that water and electricity connections cannot be given without an Occupancy Certificate. Based on this, 4 lakh connections have been stopped.' Pointing to congested localities like Chickpet and Nagarathpete, Shivakumar said they had turned into commercial hubs despite being designated as residential. He added that rental-driven unsafe construction practices were endangering lives and it should be stopped.
