Lorry in FRU crash passed Puspakom inspection, says company owner

The crash which killed nine FRU personnel in Teluk Intan on Tuesday occurred when a gravel-laden lorry collided with a FRU truck transporting personnel. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The owner of the lorry involved in the crash that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit personnel in Teluk Intan on Tuesday says the vehicle passed a Puspakom inspection just last month. The man, who only wished to be known as Ravi, 58, told Utusan Malaysia that the lorry also had all the necessary documents. On Tuesday, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said while the preliminary findings into the crash suggested a steering issue, the accident could have been prevented if the vehicle had undergone a Puspakom inspection. 'Last month, I went to Puspakom and the lorry passed inspection. After that, I renewed the road tax,' said Ravi. Ravi added that the driver involved in the crash had only been working for about a month and a half. The driver, Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, 45, was charged with causing death by reckless driving yesterday. The 8.40am crash, which also left two FRU officers critically injured, occurred when a gravel-laden lorry was involved in a collision with a FRU truck transporting personnel back to their base in Ipoh after they had provided security support at a festival in Teluk Intan. Ravi said he was deeply saddened by the incident and its impact on the victims' families. He said he was constantly thinking about the victims' families and hoped to meet them, if possible. 'Of course, I feel heartbroken,' he said. 'On behalf of the company, we apologise to the families of the victims, and I also extend my condolences to them. I would like to meet them to express my sympathies. 'I constantly think about how they must feel. They've lost family members, lost husbands — how will they go on with their lives? When the head of the family is gone, of course their lives will be difficult.'

Oil majors seek bids for transport of carbon from Singapore

The S-Hub consortium has issued a request for proposal to companies for the provision of services to transport and store carbon dioxide. (Shell pic) SINGAPORE : A carbon capture project in Singapore led by oil giants Exxon Mobil Corp and Shell Plc is seeking bids for transport and storage of the gas, as part of the country's efforts to limit industrial emissions. The S-Hub consortium, which is the lead developer, 'has issued a request for proposal to companies across Asia Pacific for the provision of services to transport and store carbon dioxide,' a spokesman from Singapore's Energy Market Authority said in response to a Bloomberg query. The feasibility study for the cross-border carbon capture and storage project was started last year, with the aim of storing emissions from sectors such as oil and gas under the seabed or deep underground. Indonesia and Malaysia are among the few countries in Asia where CO2, once captured, can be viably stored underground. 'Exxon Mobil has secured 'exclusive' rights to CO2 storage in Indonesia and Malaysia,' CEO Darren Woods said in 2023.

Singapore clears 1GW of solar imports from Indonesia

The move is part of efforts to shore up energy security via cross-border links. (Bernama pic) SINGAPORE : Singapore took a step toward importing up to 1 gigawatt of solar power from Indonesia, part of the tiny city-state's efforts to shore up energy security via cross-border links. The country's Energy Market Authority granted a conditional license to Indonesia's Singa Renewables Pte Ltd. – a joint venture between France's TotalEnergies SE and Royal Golden Eagle Pte. Ltd., according to a statement. It will also partner with Singapore Energy Interconnections Pte. Ltd. to explore building a subsea power cable between the neighbours, the statement said, without providing an investment amount or timeframe for the project. It's the latest of several planned connections in Southeast Asia aimed at carrying low-carbon energy across borders. Singapore, which depends on imported liquefied natural gas for most of its electricity, has signed deals worth billions with countries as far away as Australia to bring in up to 6 gigawatts of clean power by 2035. The country has approved 3.4 gigawatts of mostly solar energy imports from Indonesia. Earlier this week, it said it's exploring bringing in wind power from Vietnam. In February, it inked a hydropower deal with Malaysia. The subsea cable project 'strengthens its partnership with Indonesia in contributing to the Asean power grid which aims to integrate the power systems of member states in the region,' the companies said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which both countries are members. The announcement came as Singapore and France signed a wide-ranging deal during President Emmanuel Macron's visit to the city-state to enhance cooperation in clean energy, defence and cyberspace.
