Purchase limits have tightened on Costco gold bars as popularity boomed

Yahoo15-05-2025

Gold has become such a hot commodity that Costco is apparently limiting how much its members can buy.
The warehouse retailer began selling 24-karat gold bars to its members in 2023, with a limit of two bars per person. Now, that limit has changed to one per transaction and a maximum of two bars per 24 hours, when you look on the retailer website.
The price tag for a 1-ounce South African-made gold bar? $3,279.99, much higher than the $2,000 they were going for 19 months ago, shortly after Costco began selling them. However, that price increase is understandable as gold prices have risen more than 70% over that time – hitting record highs in April.

Another listing, for the 1-ounce Gold Bar PAMP Suisse Lady Fortuna Veriscan, limits members to one item per transaction and a maximum of two items per 24 hours, down from a limit of five items per 24 hours in January. The same product had a cap of two purchases per membership in September 2023, according to an archived snapshot of the listing.
The retailer also has limits on other precious metals including:
1-ounce American Eagle gold coin ($3,329.99; one per transaction and two per 24 hours)
10-ounce silver bar ($359.99; one per transaction and 10 per 24 hours)
One option without a limit is the smaller 5-gram gold bar on an 18-karat gold chain, priced at $1,149.99.
Costco did not respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY.
The gold bars constantly sold out when they were first available online in 2023. "When we load them on the site, they're typically gone within a few hours, and we limit two per member,' Costco's then-chief financial officer Richard Galanti told analysts during the company's earnings call in September 2023, according to a transcript from S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Sales of gold and other categories including jewelry were up double digits in the 24-week period ending Feb. 16, chief financial officer Gary Millerchip said. The retailer also began selling silver Canadian coins in March 2024.
Costco could be making $100 million to $200 million a month by selling gold bars, Wells Fargo Equity Research estimated in April 2024.
If gold prices remain high – prices rose more than 1% on Thursday, May 15 – and economic uncertainty continues, the bars could remain popular purchases.
"You know things are getting weird when your mom starts eyeing gold bars at Costco like it's toilet paper in 2020," one social media user quipped.

Wildfires Prompt Hudbay and Alamos Gold to Evacuate Canada Mines

Raging Canadian wildfires have forced evacuations from several mining operations as heat and wind push flames across the resource-rich western provinces. Fires prompted Hudbay Minerals Inc. to evacuate its gold and copper mine near northern Manitoba's city of Flin Flon, the company said in a Wednesday statement. Only essential personnel, authorized by emergency services, will remain at the company's Snow Lake mine to help with emergency activities.

Trump steel, aluminum tariffs taking effect

President Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs doubled on Wednesday to 50 percent, in a dramatic move aimed at protecting U.S. industries that economists say could increase prices for American consumers. The tariff hike on foreign metals went into effect just after midnight on Wednesday, and they apply to nearly all imports of steel and aluminum. The United Kingdom is exempt from the tariff hike — and will continue to face a 25 percent tariff rate — because of the trade deal announced by Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer last month. Trump on Friday announced plans to hike tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum imports from the 25 percent rate that has been in effect since March 12 — when Trump's steel exemptions on tariffs expired and his import tax hike on aluminum imports took effect. He told steelworkers in a speech at U.S. Steel's Mon Valley Works–Irvin Plant in Pittsburgh that the increase 'will even further secure the steel industry in the U.S.' The president reiterated that sentiment about aluminum imports later that day. Trump formalized the tariff hike in a proclamation on Tuesday, saying the increase would ensure 'such imports will not threaten to impair the national security.' 'In my judgment, the increased tariffs will more effectively counter foreign countries that continue to offload low-priced, excess steel and aluminum in the United States market and thereby undercut the competitiveness of the United States steel and aluminum industries,' he wrote in the proclamation. The anticipated bump in metal duties drew criticism from U.S. foreign trading allies. Canada — the largest exporter of steel and aluminum to the U.S. — called the move 'unlawful and unjustified.' 'Canada's new government is engaged in intensive and live negotiations to have these and other tariffs removed as part of a new economic and security partnership with the United States,' Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office said in a statement. Mexico reportedly plans to ask the Trump administration for an exemption from the steel tariff hike. 'It's not fair and it's unsustainable,' the country's economy minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said on Tuesday, Bloomberg News reported. 'We will present our arguments on Friday to exclude Mexico from this measure.' The move received praise from the industry group American Iron and Steel Institute. Kevin Dempsey, the group's president, said the tariff hike 'will help prevent new surges in imports that would injure American steel producers and their workers.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Popular sparkling water brand sold at Costco recalled due to possible contamination

A popular brand of sparkling water has issued a recall over possible contamination fears. On Monday, Coca-Cola sent a letter to Costco members announcing that they were voluntarily recalling Topo Chico Mineral Water due to the possible presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria that occurs naturally in water sources, including mineral water. According to the letter sent to customers, the health risks of consuming mineral water with Pseudomonas are 'very low' in healthy individuals and will only cause 'minor health consequences' in people with 'weakened immune systems.' 'The safety and quality of the products we offer our consumers is our top priority,' the letter read. The recall specifically applies to bottles that were sold at select Costco warehouses in Texas and Louisiana from May 20 to May 29, 2025. The water bottles were sold in 18-packs and have the lot number 13A2541 printed on both the case's packaging and the neck of the individual bottles. Customers who have purchased the affected water bottles are urged to return them to their local Costco in exchange for a full refund. Any questions regarding the recall can be directed to Coca-Cola using the phone number 1-800-GET-COKE. The news of the recall comes a few days after an ongoing tomato recall had been elevated by the FDA after it found the contamination could lead to death. The initial voluntary recall of H&C Farms Label tomatoes was announced at the beginning of May when Williams Farms Repack LLC distributed the potentially contaminated tomatoes to wholesalers in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Sold in different-sized packages, ranging from three-packs to 25-pound bags, the tomatoes were distributed between April 23 and 28, according to the FDA's notice. No illnesses were reported at the time. The New York Times reported that the FDA upgraded the recall last week to a Class I, described as 'a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.' At this time, the FDA doesn't expect that customers will come into contact with fresh tomatoes from the contaminated batch. However, customers may have frozen the tomatoes for future consumption. Salmonella bacteria can survive for weeks in a wet environment like a freezer. Customers are urged to throw away any affected tomatoes immediately. The source of the contamination is not known.
