The Sox managed to hold Shohei Ohtani, whom manager Alex Cora before the game dubbed 'the best athlete in the universe,' to an unremarkable 1-for-4 line with a single, a walk, and two strikeouts.
With two on and two out in the bottom of the ninth, Rob Refsnyder represented the would-be tying run. But he grounded out against Ben Casparius, a Connecticut native and UConn alumnus who recorded his first career save.

Red Sox righthander Brayan Bello (5⅓ innings, three runs) and Dodgers righthander Emmet Sheehan (five innings, two runs) took turns pitching OK.

Bello's outing was the first time since May 28 that he failed to complete six innings in a start. He had gone eight in a row meeting that minimum. On the season, he owns a 3.32 ERA.
'It feels like the bad one is six innings, three runs,' Cora said before the game. 'That's the mark of a good pitcher.'
Also present throughout his strong run: Wong. Friday marked Bello's 10th consecutive start with the backup as his batterymate.
'I just like it,' Cora said, noting that they work well together and cracking a smile to add: 'One day Carlos [Narváez] was very emotional with Bello. I was like, we need to split up the Latino guys.'

For Sheehan, it was a homecoming of sorts. The Darien, Conn., native played at Boston College. The Dodgers drafted him in the eighth round in 2021, and this was his first time pitching at Fenway Park as a major leaguer.
Los Angeles struck first, scoring a run in the second frame when Andy Pages (double) came in on Tommy Edman's two-out single looped to left field.
Bello grinded through a 40-pitch third inning but managed to limit the damage to two more runs. A couple of soft singles — plus a hard one from Will Smith — loaded the bases with one out. Bello walked Hernández to force in a run. Pages' sacrifice fly brought in another.

The Dodgers bailed out Bello with a double steal attempt. Hernández reached second, but shortstop Trevor Story threw out Freddie Freeman at the plate.

The Sox battled back with two runs in the bottom of the third, but it could have been more. Connor Wong opened the rally with a double off the Green Monster — his first extra-base hit of the season. Duran singled, then scored on Alex Bregman's Monster-scraping double.
Sheehan rebounded to retire the next nine Sox to finish his outing.

Mets' 10-Year Veteran Sends Optimistic Message Following Brewers Sweep
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets are struggling. They entered Monday on a seven-game losing streak and had lost 11 of their last 12 games. The starting rotation has not been great, Francisco Lindor is struggling at the plate and the bullpen is crumbling in big spots. However, one Mets star thinks they can still turn things around. "We can go on a run -- we've still got time," outfielder Brandon Nimmo said, per The Athletic's Will Sammon. "It just takes putting it together, playing some good baseball. We've still got a shot, and this team has been known to go on runs." NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 03: Brandon Nimmo #9 of the New York Mets reacts during the eighth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field on August 03, 2025 in the Queens... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 03: Brandon Nimmo #9 of the New York Mets reacts during the eighth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field on August 03, 2025 in the Queens borough of New York City. MoreThe Mets were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. While the Brewers are the owners of the best record in baseball, the Mets were in a position to win every game in the series. On Sunday, coughed up a five-run lead before eventually being walked off. Nimmo has spent 10 years with the Mets and was a part of the team's improbable run last year. While he is correct, and there is still time for the team to turn things around, that time is running out. The Mets entered Friday with just a 1 1/2-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for the final wild-card spot in the National League. They can still go on a run like last year, but they need their stars to start playing to their potential. Lindor, Pete Alonso, Nimmo and Juan Soto are capable of carrying the Mets offense when all four are clicking. However, that has not been the case during this stretch. Former star Jeff Teague debates Sixers' Joel Embiid Hall of Fame case
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has accomplished a ton in his NBA career. The No. 3 pick in the 2014 NBA draft, Embiid has career averages of 27.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while being named an All-Star seven times, earning the scoring title twice, and also has an MVP award under his belt. All that's missing really is a championship on his Hall of Fame resume. However, Embiid doesn't necessarily need to win a title to get into the Hall. There are plenty of players who have not won a title that have earned the honor. For example, Sixers legends Allen Iverson and Charles Barkley are Hall of Famers, but did not win that elusive title in their careers. Former NBA All-Star Jeff Teague gave his thoughts on Embiid's Hall of Fame candidacy on his podcast "Club 520" (h/t Yahoo!): "It ain't matter, just get your chicken, brother. He's done after these three years for sure… "That (expletive) missed so many games, though. He missed years. He missed three years. He missed his whole first year or something," the retired guard said on his "Club 520" podcast. "That boy ain't never played 70 games. He might not make the Hall of Fame, bro. How many points he scored?… 12,000 ain't that many, I scored 10 (thousand)." Please be advised that the clip below contains language that some might consider offensive! Teague makes a good point about his injury history. It's a shame that many will remember Embiid for being injured and the games he missed more than for his incredible feats on the court. One has to believe the big fella will have a strong case for the Hall when it's all said and done, but that remains to be seen.

How good is Houston's top trio? Bleacher Report ranks them among NBA elite
'Adding Kevin Durant in place of Jalen Green to a young, successful, and elite defensive team was the perfect fit for the 15-time All-Star,' Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz writes. The Houston Rockets have a deep roster for the 2025-26 NBA season, but they also have plenty of star power near the top. With that in mind, Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz ranks Houston as having the fourth-best trio among all 30 NBA teams. 'The Rockets already had a strong net rating when Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson shared the floor last season (plus-11.1),' Swartz writes. 'The trade for Kevin Durant was also addition by subtraction, however, as Houston was a ridiculous plus-26.8 with Şengün, Thompson, and noJalen Green in 772 possessions last season.' 'Adding Durant in place of Green to a young, successful, and elite defensive team was the perfect fit for the 15-time All-Star,' he adds via Bleacher Report. Sengun earned his first All-Star honor last season, and the hope is that Thompson isn't far behind. The three superior trios on Bleacher Report's list are the No. 3 Cleveland Cavaliers (Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Darius Garland); the No. 2 Denver Nuggets (Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon); and the No. 1 Oklahoma City Thunder (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren). Immediately behind Houston at No. 5 are the Los Angeles Clippers, who have former Rockets star James Harden paired with Kawhi Leonard and Bradley Beal. Honorable mentions went to the Los Angeles Lakers (Luka Dončić, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves), New York Knicks Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby), and Golden State Warriors (Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green).
