Hooplandia unveils wall of 2024 champions at Basketball Hall of Fame
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The champions of Hooplandia 2024 have officially secured their place in basketball history, with their names now displayed at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
On March 17, organizers of the Northeast's Ultimate 3×3 Basketball Tourney + Festival unveiled a new exhibit honoring last year's top-scoring teams, further cementing the event's growing legacy in the sport.
Major events coming to Amelia Park Arena in April and May
The exhibit features a Hooplandia-branded Spalding game ball and a striking image of two players locked in a high-intensity matchup. At its center, a commemorative plaque lists the names of 2024's champions—a tradition that will continue each year as new winners etch their names into Hooplandia history.
For John Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the exhibit represents more than just an annual honor—it showcases the power of partnership in advancing the game.
'The power of partnership is key to growing the game of basketball at every level,' Doleva said. 'When Eastern States Exposition and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame come together with a shared vision, we inspire the next generation of basketball players and elevate the game. The growth of Hooplandia is a prime example of how collaboration can fuel progress. Together, we're building a stronger, more inclusive future for the sport we love.'
Eastern States Exposition President and CEO Gene Cassidy echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the significance of Hooplandia's inclusion within the Hall of Fame.
'Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is an authority on the game of basketball at every level,' Cassidy said. 'It is imperative that Hooplandia be recognized among its exhibits. The plaque in the display will be replaced annually as countless more champions earn their place in the sport's very headquarters.'
Basketball fans can visit the new Hooplandia exhibit during the Hall of Fame's regular operating hours with a museum admission ticket, available for purchase on their website.
Meanwhile, as last year's champions enjoy their place in history, the next wave of competitors is preparing for their shot at glory. Advanced discount registration for Hooplandia 2025 is now open through May 26 with the tournament set to tip off from June 20-22.

With Steph White out, Fever don't miss a beat with Austin Kelly acting as head coach
CHICAGO – Austin Kelly had to make an outfit change before he came in for his first postgame news conference as the Indiana Fever's acting head coach. Taking over as Steph White is away from the team for personal reasons, he spent the game pacing the sidelines in a tan suit, directing players through plays and defensive actions. It was his first time as a head coach, but really, it didn't feel like it. He was cool, calm and collected, managing a 79-52 win over the Chicago Sky in front of an announced crowd of 19,000 at the United Center. Minutes after he walked off the court, his team rewarded him for it with shower of water bottles, soaking that suit to the bone. Fever rising. Sky falling. Indiana blows out Chicago despite missing Caitlin Clark, Steph White So, after changing into a blue Fever-branded long-sleeve shirt and shorts, he walked into his first postgame news conference with his toddler, Zayn, on his hip. 'It's special,' Kelly said, holding a wiggling toddler. 'We got a great group, so being in that locker room there, it means a lot. It's something I'll never forget. First win, and they did a hell of a job for 40 minutes.' As is typical with most toddlers, Zayn didn't last too long in Kelly's postgame presser — he first flung a piece of paper to the ground, then wriggled out of Kelly's grip, picked up the piece of paper to give back to his dad, then ran off to find his mom, assistant coach Karima Christmas-Kelly. The Fever have a family culture: Kelly and Christmas-Kelly bring Zayn to every game, White has her four boys at practices and games, and guard DeWanna Bonner frequently brings her twin girls. It's what made the adjustment from White to Kelly so easy, especially on such short notice. 'I think it's just a product of us being a family, honestly,' Kelly said of why the team adjusted to him so quickly. 'We really enjoy each other's company, from our staff to our players, and we're super competitive. Our staff, we'll get out there and play. That competitiveness, that 'lock-in' that we have as a group allows for whatever piece comes in to be able to pick it up quickly.' That family culture, too, made the Fever even more motivated to win this game. Both for Kelly's first win as an acting head coach and to do it for White, who is working through a family emergency. 'I really want to win for Steph, she's going through a tough time with her family right now,' Fever guard DeWanna Bonner told IndyStar pregame. 'We want to rally together and get this one for her, but it's also Austin's first time at the helm, so it's double-duty right now.' And the transition was seamless — maybe because of how in-tune the Fever coaching staff has been with each other for years. 'I feel like they've kind of morphed into the same person,' Fever center Aliyah Boston said postgame with a laugh. 'I mean, I think they both instill that confidence in us and also just continue to coach us through each possession on defense, make sure they're communicating with us.' The entire coaching staff has known each other for over a decade, dating back to the 2012 Fever championship team where White was an assistant coach, Christmas-Kelly and fellow assistant Briann January were players and Kelly was a practice player. Kelly has worked with White in multiple aspects over the years. He was the director of recruiting on White's staff at Vanderbilt from 2019-21, and she gave him his first opportunity in the WNBA when she brought him on as an assistant in Connecticut in 2023. 'None of this is possible without her,' Kelly said. 'I owe her everything. She's been a great mentor for me, and she made the transition easy with the amount of trust she put in me, so I owe her a lot.' White texted Kelly after Indiana's win Saturday night, and he said he planned to give her a call after his news conference. There's not a timetable for her return to the Fever, but she's still staying connected. And she's putting her complete confidence in Kelly and staff to keep the Fever going while she has to be away. "My staff is so good and trusting in them that if I needed to be away for a period of time, it's status quo," White told IndyStar ahead of the season. "Our team knows that, they have great respect for them, and I know that, and I trust them implicitly, so it gives even more peace of mind." Chicopee Mayor Vieau wins trophy at Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic teed off Friday morning from Franconia Golf Course in Springfield. The day kicked off with the mayors of Springfield, West Springfield, Agawam, Westfield and Chicopee all taking part in the coveted Mayor's Cup. Each mayor had three short putts to make. For each one they made, they got to take a second shot at a long putt. Closest ball wins. LIST: Ironman triathlon to cause weekend road closures In the end, Chicopee Mayor John Vieau came out victorious, recapturing the title from told 22News why he looks forward to this event, 'I get to collaborate with the mayors of western Mass. It's an incredible day and also a wonderful event. The Spirit of Springfield's fundraiser. It's a beautiful golf tournament on a beautiful day.' Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and West Springfield Mayor William Reichelt have yet to secure the elusive trophy, but they put up a good fight this year. All five mayors said they hope to be back next year. Jeffrey Speller Foundation ‘4 Change' presents check for Springfield youth golf program
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' presented a check to the City of Springfield, helping to further their youth golf programs. A student part of the golf program said, 'Thank you for the people who contributed to give kids like me a chance to play golf and sports like these.' Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' charitable golf tournament 22News Anchor Ciara Speller and founder of Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' presented a check for $5,000 alongside her mother on behalf of their foundation, the Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change'. The donation, benefiting the Springfield middle school golf program, was made as her father, Jeffrey, was an avid golfer with a goal to inspire the youth. 'Providing this check in memory of my father, which was made possible through our inaugural tournament in August, is just so meaningful to us. I know that he would be so thrilled with this and we are just so happy to carry his legacy, and his mission and his vision,' 22News Anchor Ciara Speller said. Marc Gomes, the vice president at Van Sickle Academy, shared what this program means for many of his students, 'Giving students from the inner-city the opportunity to do something they may not have an opportunity to do. It's giving them exposure to play golf, which is actually fun, and it is also giving them an opportunity to network.' 'Discipline, self-confidence, resilience, and determination are all key values that are so important to positively shaping a young person's life, and something that my dad really credited this game with positively influencing his life,' Ciara Speller stated. The second annual Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' is June 28th at Wyckoff Country Club. 'Through that event, we will of course, be able to provide more funding for other deserving youth who want to partake in the game of golf, here in western Massachusetts and beyond.' Golfing spots are limited, but there is also a lunch and dinner for non-golfers to enjoy and still be able to support Jeffrey's mission.
