Raytheon's ‘DeepStrike' autonomous launcher shines at US Army's PC-C5 initiative

Yahoo26-03-2025
Raytheon's new autonomous launcher, 'DeepStrike,' made a successful debut at the U.S. Army's Project Convergence Capstone 5 (PC-C5) event, which focuses on testing future warfare technologies.
Paired with its bid for a new training missile, 'DeepStrike' was successfully fired three times with different objectives during the event, a company official said.
At this year's event, officials are testing several autonomous weapons, including the Army's AML system, an uncrewed version of the M142 rocket launcher, and a rival design from Raytheon.
The arms manufacturing company is building its mobile launcher on Oshkosh Defense's FMTV A2 truck, using autonomy technology from Forterra.
According to Brian Burton, vice president of Precision Fires and Maneuver at Raytheon, the industry team is using a leader-follower set up, where a manned vehicle takes the lead while an autonomous launcher follows.
The trio tested the model earlier this month at Project Convergence in California's Fort Irwin. They used the defense giant's bid for the Army's Joint Reduced Range Rocket (JT3) program, designed for either the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) or M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
The company submitted its proposal in May 2024, with Ursa Major supplying the rocket motor. However, a winner has yet to be selected. The aerospace leader now plans to take feedback from the PC-C5 event and continue launcher development and testing accordingly.
'We're gonna do more testing … more autonomous vehicle demonstrations to where we're proving out how it operates in a complex battlefield,' Burton said in a press release.
'As you can imagine, with autonomy, you're going to run into fog and rain. You're going to run into vehicles, enemy vehicles that have been destroyed and are on fire, and so those things need to be accounted for.'
As companies develop new autonomous ground weapons, Army officials are identifying limitations, assessing their role in formations, and acquiring ground robots through various initiatives.
However, the service has yet to announce a concrete plan for acquiring an autonomous launcher. If it moves forward, it cannot rely on DEVCOM for mass production, Long-Range Precision Fires Cross Functional Team leader Brig. Gen. Rory Crooks said in January.
'I don't see DEVCOM as being the way to introduce larger numbers into formations in the near future. That will be how we leverage industry,' Crooks said. 'But it starts with refining that requirement, which we're in the process of [doing].'
PC-C5 is the U.S. Army's premier modernization experiment, which brings together joint and multinational partners to test and integrate advanced technologies aimed at enhancing battlefield capabilities and interoperability.
Now in its fifth iteration, PC-C5 is being held at both the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, and across the Indo-Pacific, with key locations including Hawaii, Guam, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, and French Tahiti.

Yes, You Read That Right. Palantir Just Won $10 Billion From the U.S. Army.

Key Points On July 31, the U.S. Army merged 75 smaller contracts into one big $10 billion award -- and handed it to Palantir. Spread over 10 years, the contract secures about $1 billion a year in revenue for the AI defense tech contractor. Palantir earns superior and growing profit margins on its revenue. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › When you follow the U.S. Pentagon's daily digest of contract awards as regularly as I do, things sometimes tend to blend together. Don't get me wrong -- $1 billion here, $1 billion there, and it eventually becomes clear that the government is spending "real money" on military hardware. Still, most of the contracts described on the Pentagon's website tend to be much smaller in size -- $10 million here, a few tens of millions there. All of which I tell you by way of illustrating that when all of a sudden, the U.S. Army announced last month that it's awarding a $10 billion contract to defense contracting upstart Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR), that made me sit up and take notice. Palantir's big payday This contract, announced on July 31, is the biggest single award I've ever seen handed to Palantir, and almost 10 times bigger than the Maven Smart System contract it won from the U.S. Army in May. And yet it's perhaps not quite as big as it seems. As described on the Pentagon website, the $10 billion award "transition[s] existing contracts in which Palantir is currently a prime or subcontractor to [a new] enterprise agreement" worth $10 billion. This means the award doesn't really give Palantir $10 billion worth of new work to do for the Army. Rather, a substantial amount of the award (and perhaps even all of it), comprises dozens of existing contracts, already won by the defense company, now bundled up into one megasized $10 billion deal to provide artificial intelligence (AI) software and data services to the U.S. Army. What's more, the $10 billion value is spread across 10 years. All of which is to say that Palantir's "$10 billion contract" is really worth only about $1 billion a year -- and much or all of that $1 billion was already destined for Palantir's wallet anyway. How much is $1 billion worth? Now, let's try to put these numbers in context for you. One billion dollars may not be as big a number as $10 billion, but it's still pretty big. Palantir generated $3.4 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. So a $1 billion Army contract amounts to about 29% of the revenue Palantir collected over the last 12 months -- a very big deal if this were additional incremental revenue added to the company's revenue stream. It's less of a big deal, however, if all the Army is doing here is gluing together 75 smaller, existing contracts into one super-big agreement. A second consideration is how valuable this revenue is to Palantir, which is to say, what kind of profit margin the company will earn on its $1 billion a year. The good news here is that Palantir's software-centric profit margins are robust, and getting even more so over time. In 2023 for example, Palantir earned a 5.4% operating profit margin on its revenue. In 2024, that number doubled to 10.8%. This year, it's grown even more, to about 23.3%. That's the good news. The better news is that the new $10 billion mega-contract "removes contract-related fees," according to the Army. And this logically implies that it's removing cost from the contract, potentially permitting Palantir's profit margin to expand even further. Is Palantir stock a buy? At least, Palantir investors had better hope this is the case. Palantir is generating giant revenue from the U.S. military; no one disputes that. Its revenue is also growing, roughly doubling in size since 2021, whether or not this particular $10 billion contract adds to that growth. However, none of this changes the fact that Palantir is a frighteningly expensive stock, and that it absolutely must continue to both grow its revenue and expand its profit margin in order to justify its valuation. Priced at an astounding 573 times trailing earnings, or an only slightly less alarming 255 times free cash flow, Palantir probably needs to be growing earnings somewhere in the low triple-digit percentage range to justify its current stock price -- yet according to S&P Global data, most analysts project no more than a 40% long-term earnings growth rate for the stock. Sad as it is to say, even with a $10 billion Army contract in hand, Palantir stock costs too much to buy. Should you buy stock in Palantir Technologies right now? Moon or Doom: Where Does XRP Price Go Next?

The XRP Army has drawn the line: the $3 price mark is now their battlefield. But, at the moment, traders can't seem to decide if XRP is headed to the moon or back down towards doom. After hot inflation data dampened jumbo rate cut hopes earlier this week, XRP dropped 6.4%—right down to that pivotal $3.00 mark that could define the crypto asset's next major move. On Myriad, a prediction market created by Decrypt's parent company Dastan, traders remain slightly bullish despite the correction. Myriad users give XRP a 63.7% chance of reaching $4 or higher (the moon scenario) versus 36.3% odds of crashing back down to $2 or below (doom). So who's right? XRP price: The technical puzzle XRP, the cryptocurrency created by the founders of payments company Ripple, presents a technical puzzle that explains why traders are currently so divided. For reference, even at just $3, XRP commands a market capitalization of $181 billion, good for third-largest behind only Bitcoin and Ethereum. And it's coming off a very recent all-time high of $3.65, which the coin hit less than a month ago. So where is it going next? For starters, the distance from its current price (the white line in the chart below) to the moon (the green line) and its distance towards doom (the red line) is basically the same: 33.33%. So, odds based on the percentage leap required to hit either scenario is not really a factor right now. It's going to require a little further digging. One classic indicator for traders is the Relative Strength Index, or RSI. For XRP, this sits right at 48, just shy of the neutral 50 mark. RSI measures momentum on a scale of 0-100, where readings above 70 signal overbought conditions (time to sell) and below 30 indicate oversold (time to buy). At 48, we're in no-man's land—slightly bearish but not enough to panic. This is what traders call the "decision zone," where markets pick their next direction. Going off RSI, under current conditions, market forces are in equilibrium. However, the overall trend is bullish, so this would signal to traders that prices are more likely to maintain momentum and speed unless something else affects the trend. The Average Directional Index, or ADX, at 28 tells a more decisive story. ADX measures trend strength regardless of direction. Think of it as a speedometer that doesn't care if you're going forwards or backwards. Readings above 25 confirm a strong trend exists, and at 28, XRP is definitely trending. This signals to traders that XRP's upward movement is likely to continue, even if slowly. And, of course, the more the price goes up, the less likely a $2 'doom' scenario becomes. Another key indicator is the exponential moving average, which measures the average price of an asset over a certain amount of time. For XRP, the 50-day EMA sits comfortably above the 200-day EMA, creating what traders call a "bullish stack." This means the average price of XRP in the short-term is trading above the average price over the long-term, and that typically means buyers will keep stepping in at higher prices. It's a vote of confidence in the uptrend. This setup usually favors continuation higher unless something breaks. For XRP to correct down to the 'doom' zone, it would need to switch momentum entirely and, likely, enter a death cross formation. The only indicator that is not bullish for XRP right now seems to be the Squeeze Momentum Indicator, which shows a price consolidation zone as the Ripple-linked token struggles to break past its recent all-time high. Think of it as the market taking a deep breath before the next sprint. Prices can experience a stronger trend either up or down, depending on catalysts. That 'squeeze' zone is considered a price compression because there are a large number of orders fighting to determine the trend. If short-term traders exit those positions in search for other markets, then there could be a fast dip in the same zone as it could trigger many 'stop-loss' zones. On the other hand, if there is a short squeeze, or bulls take control, it could trigger a spike based on buy orders activated too close to each other. But technicals only tell half the story. The 30-day moving average for XRP whale inflows to exchanges jumped to 260 million tokens from 141 million tokens at July's start, with large holders offloading nearly $6 billion worth since mid-July. That's a serious distribution that historically precedes corrections, because the most logical reason to send an asset to an exchange is to sell it. Meanwhile, the SEC and Ripple finally ended their legal battle, removing a major overhang. Add an 88% chance of spot XRP ETF approval by December according to Polymarket and nearly 60% preference over a Litecoin ETF on Myriad Markets, and you've got catalysts that could send XRP either direction—violently. XRP bulls have the edge Weighing all of the data, it's clear the charts today slightly favor the XRP moon scenario. The combination of price respecting an upward channel, maintaining position above both key EMAs, and the Squeeze ready to fire would convince traders of a compelling bullish setup. The ADX confirming trend strength while RSI sits neutral gives XRP room to run without being overextended. Considering indicators show traders in equilibrium during a bullish move (instead of showing such behavior when the coin is trading sideways), the ascending channel and compressed volatility suggest XRP could test $3.30 within days. A clean break above would likely trigger momentum toward $4. But those massive whale sales keep the doom scenario very much alive. If the $2.80 support cracks, all bullish bets are off. This is crypto—and when things break, they break hard.
