This PFA is for you: Surprising amount of ‘forever chemicals' found in some American beers, study finds

Independent6 days ago

Beer drinkers should pay attention the next time they imbibe, as they may be consuming more than just alcohol, according to a new study from the American Chemical Society.
It reports that some U.S. beers contain higher than the Environmental Protection Agency's maximum safe levels of polyfluoroalkyl substances, which have come to be known as " forever chemicals" due to the fact that they don't naturally break down or pass through the body.
Other recent reports have found PFAS are present in drinking water across the globe, and the study's author decided to see if those same chemicals were making their way into beer.
"As an occasional beer drinker myself, I wondered whether PFAS in water supplies were making their way into our pints. I hope these findings inspire water treatment strategies and policies that help reduce the likelihood of PFAS in future pours," wrote lead researcher Jennifer Hoponick Redmon.
Breweries do use water filtration and treatment systems to ensure only quality water is being used in their brews, but those systems don't typically block PFAS from entering into the system.
Redmon and her team modified an EPA testing tool analyzing PFAS in drinking water and used it to test 23 U.S. beers.
They selected beers from areas where water-system contamination has already been documented, as well as beers from areas with unknown water systems.
According to the study's findings, some breweries in North Carolina, California, and Michigan had elevated levels of PFAS in their beers.
In 95 percent of the beer tested, PFAS with perfluorooctanesulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid — both forever chemicals — were present.
Beers from outside the U.S. were also tested. One beer from Holland and two from Mexico were tested, and were found to be less likely to contain PFAS.
"Our findings indicate a strong link between PFAS in drinking water and beer, with beers brewed in areas with higher PFAS in local drinking water translating to higher levels of PFAS in beer, showing that drinking water is a primary route of PFAS contamination in beer," the research team determined.
Last fall, researchers from the University of Birmingham, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, and Hainan University, Haikou, published a study that found that forever chemicals were present in water across the world.
PFAS can accumulate in the bodies of living organisms and have been linked to severe health conditions. They are used in different products like pesticides, non-stick cookware, food packaging and cosmetics, and can enter wastewater through many day-to-day activities. Government regulation has banned some, while the use of others is still widespread, with their toxic effects yet to be fully investigated.
They also revealed a wide range of PFAS contamination for target PFAS, beginning at 63 percent of bottled waters tested.

Shirtless vacation photo of NBA superstar Steph Curry sparks concern from fans

Stephen Curry has sparked concern from NBA fans after posing shirtless from vacation with his wife Ayesha. Curry and the Warriors were eliminated in five games by the Timberwolves in the Western Conference semifinals, with the sharpshooting guard sidelined for the final four games of the series with a left hamstring strain. And while he appears to be enjoying his offseason break, fans took note of several scratches on his body as Ayesha posted a selfie of the couple. 'They really beat Steph up on the court with all the scratches. Enjoy the summer guys, one fan said. 'All those scratches on Steph and the refs would still be like na he didn't get fouled,;' a second added. 'Look at all them battle scars on the a third chimed in. Before getting hurt against Minnesota, Curry had played a physical first-round series against the Rockets, and Golden State coach Steve Kerr had complained about his star man not getting enough foul calls. Kerr accused Golden State's playoff opponents of 'bear-hugging' Curry as he later responded to the officiating complaints of Minnesota coach Chris Finch. 'For eight straight games now, Steph hasn't had any freedom of movement. They've called maybe four or five calls in eight games,' he said. 'And we're watching it on tape, they're literally bear-hugging Steph. That's a foul. But they're allowing it, and like I said, both teams are gonna have complaints every game.' Ultimately, the Warriors were unable to stay afloat without their best player as they lost four straight contests to bow out of the postseason in the second round. It brought an abrupt end to what had been a strong final push of the season for the Warriors. Following the midseason acquisition of Jimmy Butler from the Heat, the Warriors went 20-7 after the All-Star Break to finish seventh in the West, before clinching a playoff spot in the play-in. Curry was his typically impressive self against the Rockets, averaging 24 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.7 assists per night while shooting 39.2 percent from three-point range. He'll return for his 17th season next season as the Warriors hope to make some noise in a loaded Western Conference.

The Oura ring is our fitness editor's favorite tracker — here's how to get $100 off

As a fitness editor, I've tried pretty much every wearable out there. From the all-new Whoop 5 to the Apple Watch, I love a fitness tracker and I've tested them all. They range in price and what they offer in terms of features and of course, some are more impressive than others. However, there's one device I've personally been wearing solidly for years — the Oura ring (was $299, now $199, My Oura ring has never let me down. I use it to track my sleep, energy levels, menstrual cycle, and recovery and this tiny, chic device has helped me take my health and wellbeing to new heights. The only drawback with the Oura ring is that it's expensive. But, that's no longer an issue as the Oura ring gen 3 now has a saving of $100. The Oura ring 4 ($349, was voted the best smart ring on the market by senior tech writer Alex Lee and despite Samsung recently launching its Galaxy ring, Oura remains a firm favorite for fans of wearables, myself included. I love how the gold finish matches the rest of my jewelry and how lightweight, well-fitting, and easy to wear it is. Of course, you can also get the Oura in silver and cool, minimalist black as well as rose gold. The ring uses sensors inside the band to track variables that feedback information on your sleep quality, heart rate, and a raft of other health markers. To benefit from the discount and learn why I think you should invest, keep scrolling. If you're shopping for a tracker that simply measures fitness levels, there are plenty to choose from, but what makes the Oura ring special is that it offers much more. Not only is it small, lightweight, and easy to wear, it offers a range of insights that other trackers don't. My favorite features are the daily tags you can add to your activity log and the cycle calendar — which helps track your mood, sleep, and energy levels and predict the coming phases of your cycle. I've also found that I've been able to improve my sleep quality using the Oura ring — the sensors track your heart rate variability to track how long you spend in each phase of light, deep, and REM sleep, and by checking this and adapting the environment in my bedroom, taking my supplements at different times and going to bed earlier, I've been able to improve my overall sleep scores and rest better thanks to the ring. While the ring and subscription to the app aren't exactly cheap, this has been one of the most worthwhile investments I've made for my health. Oura ring 3 vs Oura ring 4 The deal on the third-generation Oura ring is impressively low and this is likely because Oura recently launched the ring 4. So, should you buy the newer model over the less expensive ring 3 that's on sale right now? Well, this all depends on what you're looking for in a smart ring. Both the Oura ring 3 and 4 are titanium-based, but the inside of the newer version is now wrapped in high-grade metal instead of the plastic used on the gen 3. The Oura ring 4 is also lighter, at 3.3-5.2g (depending on size), compared with 4-6g. While both versions of the ring promise to deliver similar metrics and insights, the ring 4 features an improved sensor platform that sits flusher with the ring, and it has an improved battery life, which is up to eight days, compared with the ring 3's seven days. In his review of the latest Oura ring, tech expert Alex said: 'The main benefit that the Oura ring 4 provides, compared with the gen 3, is improved durability, comfort and accuracy. This isn't a generational upgrade over the Oura ring 3, merely strengthening its position as the best smart ring out there for sleep tracking and recovery.'

Kamala Harris gives clearest signal yet she will run for White House again in 2028

Former Vice President Kamala Harris triggered further speculation over the weekend that she is not running for governor of California after she delivered a lackluster address to the Democratic state political convention. Harris did not attend the event in-person but sent a three-minute video address that was politely received by the audience. In a steady, monotone voice, she spoke about the Trump administration's recent actions against universities and praised activists efforts to fight the president's agenda. 'While this administration in Washington tries to divide us, we hear know that we are stronger when we stand together,' she said, a flashback to her 2024 campaign slogan. Harris' failure to appear at the convention and her video address suggested she was not interested in running for governor of California, and instead pursuing a return to presidential politics. The Democratic primary for the race is scheduled for June 2, 2026, with the general election scheduled for November. Harris has always been popular in California, easily beating Democratic challengers in her race for Attorney General and her race for Senator of California. Her 2020 race for president, however, failed spectacularly as she ended her campaign before the Iowa caucuses and the California primary. Since her loss, Harris has vowed to 'stay in the fight' and organized some of her trusted aides into the organization Pioneer49, while she explores her political future. California Democratic activists are frustrated by the lack of signals from Harris, as they are impatient to move forward with a clear candidate. If Harris runs for governor, she will likely forego another run for president in 2028, which Democratic strategists in Washington, DC fully expect her to explore. She continues to delay any decisions about running for governor or diving into presidential politics again, telling advisors she will made a decision in late-summer. A third option remains, that she will forego a political career entirely and remain a paid speaker and inspirational figure for activists with the option of publishing a book of her memoirs. In the meantime, Harris continues to take the stage to protest the Trump administration and rally activists. Last week, she appeared at an event in Australia where she shared a bizarre story about her mother and spiraled into word salads when asked to speak about the importance of humility. Harris also appeared at the lavish Met Gala last month wearing a custom look from Off-White, designed by creative director IB Kamara, but skipped the red carpet. The failed presidential candidate also took the stage at Emerge 20th anniversary gala at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco to deliver the keynote speech that began late in the evening. 'It's good to be home!' Harris laughed as she took the stage, criticizing Trump for his agenda, particularly his tariffs. 'Instead of the administration working to advance America's highest ideals, we are witnessing a wholesale abandonment of those ideals,' she said. Trump's agenda, she said, was 'not lowering costs' and 'not making life more affordable' and 'not what they promised.' She noted that the Trump administration was counting on the fact that fear was 'contagious.' She also urged Democrats to find courage in the video of the San Diego Zoo elephants who responded to a recent earthquake by circling around each other. 'As soon as they felt the earth shaking beneath their feet, they got in a circle and stood next to each other to protect the most vulnerable,' she said. 'Think about it. What a powerful metaphor.' Harris cautioned Democrats from dismissing Trump's efforts as 'chaos.' 'Understand what we are in fact witnessing is a high velocity event, where a vessel is being used for the swift implementation of an agenda that has been decades in the making,' She urged Americans to stand against the administration with courage. 'What we are experiencing right now is exactly what they envisioned for America, right now we are living in their vision for America, but this is not a vision that American's want.' She praised people who protested the president's agenda, including his deportation orders. 'It is not okay to detain and disappear American citizens or anyone without due process,' she said. Harris only spoke for about 15 minutes, but it was the crowning moment for the event that helped raise money for female political candidates.
