Roundtable discussion held to shape first media, info literacy strategy
ISLAMABAD: In a significant step toward fostering a digitally responsible and informed society, UNESCO, in collaboration with Media Foundation 360, the Department of Digital Media at the University of the Punjab and the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS) organised a high-level technical session in Islamabad titled 'Shaping National Policy: Enhancing Policymakers' Understanding of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Challenges.'
The session brought together members of the National Assembly, parliamentarians from the Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting, media professionals, communication strategists, and academic experts to discuss the integration of Media and Information Literacy into Pakistan's national policy frameworks.
Held at PIPS Seminar Room-II, the event served as a platform to deliberate on how MIL can serve as a tool to combat disinformation, foster critical thinking, and build democratic resilience among citizens, particularly youth.
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from Executive Director of PIPS Asim Khan Goraya, who emphasized the importance of equipping policymakers with strategic insights into the risks posed by misinformation in the digital age.
Chairperson of the Department of Digital Media and the lead for the strategy development Prof. Dr. Savera Mujib Shami presented the key elements of the draft National MIL Strategy. She highlighted the strategy's focus on embedding MIL into Pakistan's educational curricula, media practices, and governance systems, with an emphasis on youth empowerment, gender inclusion, and ethical digital engagement.
The Officer-in-Charge of the UNESCO Office in Pakistan Antony Kar Hung Tam addressed the gathering and underlined UNESCO's commitment to supporting Pakistan in building inclusive knowledge societies. He reiterated the organization's vision of empowering citizens to navigate the complex digital information landscape safely and responsibly through Media and Information Literacy.
The session featured an interactive panel discussion and roundtable dialogue, chaired by the member of the National Assembly Syeda Shehla Raza. The conversation revolved around the urgent need to empower youth with critical thinking skills, promote civic education, and instill democratic values to counter the growing threat of disinformation. Participants discussed how MIL could be used beyond classrooms to strengthen public discourse and social cohesion.
The concluding session was chaired by the Minister of State for National Heritage and Culture Huzaifa Rehman. Notable participants included Senator Sarmad Ali, Pullain Baloch, Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting; MNA Nawabzada Mir Jamal Khan Raisani, General Secretary of the Young Parliamentarians Forum (YPF); as well as members of the National Assembly Ahmed Saleem Siddiqui, Dr Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro, Ms. Rana Ansar, and Ms. Asia Naz Tanoli. Mubashar Bukhari, President of Media Foundation 360; Muhammad Noshad Ali, Group Executive Editor of Daily Pakistan; and Ms. Amina Ali, a Culture and Communication Strategist, also took part in the round-table, contributing valuable insights to the discussion

Budget on track, June 10 confirmed
The government on Thursday insisted that no decision has been made to postpone the federal budget for fiscal year 2025-26, clarifying that the previously announced date of June 10 remains unchanged. The clarification came amid speculations regarding a possible delay due to Eid holidays. "The federal budget will be presented on June 10," Federal Finance Secretary Imdad Ullah Bosal told the media after exiting a committee meeting at the National Assembly. He said the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting date may be revised, while the upcoming fiscal year's budget is being finalised in consultation with the IMF. Moreover, Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad wrote on X that no decision has been made to postpone or reschedule the budget. "Similarly, the upcoming Pakistan Economic Survey FY25 is scheduled to be announced on June 9, 2025."

Shehbaz, Aliyev pledge to diversify strategic ties
Listen to article Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed on Tuesday the shared commitment to diversifying the bilateral strategic partnership through investment in mutually beneficial avenues, said a news release issued from the Prime Minister's Office. Shehbaz met with President Aliyev in the city of Lachin for talks on "the full spectrum of bilateral relations". During the meeting, both sides underscored the importance of coordinated efforts for regional stability and reiterated their principled positions on key international issues. The talks on Azerbaijan's Independence Day and on the eve of a trilateral summit of Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Turkiye, added a symbolic dimension to the exchange between the two leaders. Shehbaz felicitated President Aliyev on this important national occasion. The prime minister thanked Azerbaijan for its steadfast support during the recent Pakistan-India confrontation and acknowledged the public expressions of solidarity from both the leadership and the people of brotherly Azerbaijan. Shehbaz noted that the people of Azerbaijan celebrated the success of Pakistan in Maarka-e-Haq. He added that both the countries had stood by each other on every occasion and would continue to do so, the news release stated. "The two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction over the upward trajectory of political, economic, defence, and cultural cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan," read the news release. "They reaffirmed their shared commitment to diversifying the strategic partnership through investment in mutually beneficial avenues," it said, adding that the Azerbaijan side agreed that delegation-level talks in this regard would be organised very soon. The prime minister noted that holding the bilateral meeting in Lachin, a city that reflects Azerbaijan's journey of resilience and restoration, carried deep symbolic and emotional significance for both sides, according to the news release. The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to deepening the Pakistan-Azerbaijan partnership and working closely to further advance their shared objectives at the bilateral and regional levels. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarrar and Special Assistant to Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi were also present on the occasion. 10,000 Pakistanis trapped in Cambodia
A National Assembly panel was informed on Tuesday that around 10,000 Pakistanis were trapped in the jungles of Cambodia, prompting it to summon reports from both the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The revelation was made by the interior ministry during a session of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights. Briefing the committee on human smuggling, the additional secretary for interior said that around 10,000 individuals were currently stranded in the jungles of Myanmar and Cambodia. The stranded individuals are reportedly being forced into jungle clearing, agricultural labour and narcotics-related work.
