A day of jumping for Operation Hope and Caring
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A fundraising effort to benefit students in the Sioux Falls School District most affected by poverty is about to reach new heights.
In one week, Air Madness will open its doors to families who want to have fun while supporting a cause.
'Levo started Operation Hope & Caring with the Sioux Falls Storm in 2017 to really help level the playing field for the kids in our Title 1 schools,' Vice President of Marketing and Business Development Jen McKeown said.
Jen McKeown is with Levo Credit Union and says 12 schools in Sioux Falls are currently eligible to receive funds.
'A lot of times those are kids who qualify for free and reduced lunches. The schools don't necessarily have PTOs or PTAs to help with some of the things that many of us take for granted,' McKeown said.
Operation Hope & Caring has provided more than $109,000 in assistance to schools and students since 2017.

'Things like snacks and laundry detergent for the washers that they purchased a while back to do laundry for the kids who don't have facilities at home,' McKeown said.
'One of the things we use them for is basic needs for our kids, coats, hats, mittens,' Laura B. Anderson Elementary Principal Wade Helleson said.
Wade Helleson is the principal at Laura B. Anderson Elementary, where they also established a care closet with everything from breakfast items to hygiene products.
'Discreetly they can come into this space and seek out some of those things that they might need,' Helleson said.
The space is dedicated to education assistant Cindy Nieber who passed away suddenly last spring.
'One of those people that just had joy for serving and she just put her heart and soul into being there for kids,' Helleson said.
Highlighting the importance of a day of jumping to help families in need.
'What better way to do that than to come and have fun, an entire day of fun, and then know that you're doing it for a very, very worthy cause,' McKeown said.
KELOLAND Media Group is a sponsor of the event, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. next Tuesday at Air Madness. The cost is $25 for an entire day of jumping and includes an arcade gift card. 100% of the net proceeds will benefit Operation Hope & Caring.

2026 corn murals to feature patriotic theme
MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO)– Next year marks the 250th anniversary of America. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4th, 1776. The Corn Palace in Mitchell is getting ready for the milestone. Rescue at Hippie Hole in the Black Hills Next year's murals will be all about the U.S. 'They're really representative of what our country's been through,' Corn Palace Director Dave Sietsema said. The patriotic theme of the 2026 designs coincides with the 250th anniversary of the country. 'We have some recruiting posters from the WWII era, we have the Wright Brothers aviation, we have the American eagle, the American flag, symbols like that that our country draws itself to to celebrate our patriotic side and who we are as a country,' Sietsema said. While the current murals will still remain up for months, work is underway to replace the material surrounding the murals. 'We've got a crew of high school and college kids who come back, we go out to any particular farmer's field and pick sour dock, like this right out of the field, and then we come back and we put in it a bundle like this,' Field Director Clark Mickelson said. The rye will also be replaced. Later this year, it will be time to add the new murals. 'Probably in October, November when the corn is harvested. Construction affects Sioux Falls city parks
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — New construction projects this week will impact people's access to a pair of Sioux Falls city parks. Starting Monday, crews will begin replacing the Riverdale Park asphalt bike trail with concrete. No access to the bike trail loop will be available from the park. Instead, you can get to the trail from either Rotary or Cherry Rock parks. The work should be finished next month. Also Monday, crews will be installing utilities at the new pool in McKennan Park. Recess program gets dogs out of the shelter for a day
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Christie Schenefeld started fostering in March, but as summer approached, her schedule got busier. Just when she thought she had to take a break from volunteering, she found out about Rescue Dog Recess. 'It's just so fun seeing the dogs start out their day. Just excited to get out, go on an adventure and come back and they're resting their head on your arm or they're curled up snoring in the seat next to you. It's just so rewarding to see them just get to be dogs and be happy,' said Christie Schenefeld, a volunteer at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Crews respond to fire at Delux Motel on West 12th Street Schenefeld has taken dozens of dogs on field trips since the program launched in April. Some of her favorite stops are Great Bear and Falls Park, but they all end the same way. 'And then, of course, you gotta finish up with a treat or a pup cup,' said Schenefeld. None of this would be possible without the employee who started the program. 'I saw other shelters kind of do a doggy day out program. But I like to be unique, so I named it something different. Rescue Dog Recess. Because we want them to have fun at recess like kids,' said Lexy Nuttbrock, a kennel supervisor and foster coordinator at the SFAHS. Even though Rescue Dog Recess is still in its first few months of operation, it's been successful so far. 'We've seen less behavior problems. Dogs are walking better on leashes, they are being introduced to strangers better, less reactions. This is a super stressful place.
