Trial opens in Bali for US man charged with receiving illegal ADHD pills
William Wallace Molyneaux V, a U.S. citizen, was arrested May 23 after he allegedly collected a package containing illegal drugs at a post office near Kuta beach, a popular tourist spot.
Prosecutor I Made Dipa Umbara said the arrest followed a tip that Molyneaux received a suspicious package by mail from London. Bali's Narcotic Agency seized the package and investigators reported they found 99 Adderall pills in seven silver medicine boxes containing 1.86 grams of amphetamine.
The 27-year-old resident of Brooksville, Florida, told authorities that he was addicted to amphetamines because he has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.
Molyneaux told authorities he bought Adderall online from the dark web and paid the equivalent of $250 in Monero, a cryptocurrency, while on vacation in Bali, Umbara said.
'ADHD medications, such as Adderall, consist of amphetamines and are therefore illegal in Indonesia, no exceptions,' Umbara told the Denpasar District Court.
Molyneaux faces multiple charges including importing drugs, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a fine up to 10 billion rupiah ($609,980).
A court document showed Molyneaux was transferred from a detention center to a rehabilitation center in Bali on July 9 after Molyneaux's U.S. doctor provided a written statement saying he suffers ADHD and needs treatment.
The panel of three judges adjourned the trial until Aug. 12, when the court will hear witness testimony.
Indonesia's strict drug laws include possible execution by a firing squad for convicted traffickers.
About 530 people are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes, including 96 foreigners, according to Ministry of Immigration and Corrections data. Indonesia's most recent executions of an Indonesian citizen and three foreigners were carried out in July 2016.

More than €750,000 of cannabis plants were seized by gardaí, and two men (40s) were arrested after a search operation in Drogheda, Co Louth, on Tuesday. Talking parrot helps bring down drugs gang
A talking parrot has helped bring down a major drugs operation after a gang member taught the pet how to say phrases used by dealers, like "two for 25". The bird was discovered when police raided homes in Blackpool where officers also seized large amounts of heroin and cocaine. Ringleader Adam Garnett, 35, ran the gang from inside prison from 2023 to 2024. A search of his cell uncovered phones which had videos showing kilo blocks of drugs and footage of his girlfriend's pet parrot Mango talking and playing with drugs money. After Garnett's cell search, police identified his next-in-command were his girlfriend Shannon Hilton, 29, of no fixed address, Dalbir Sandhu, 41, of Beech Road, Cleveleys and Jason Gerrand, 50, of Shore Road, Thornton-Cleveleys. A video on Hilton's phone revealed her laughing as she taught the bird to say "two for 25" in front of a child. Police handout Sandhu's phone revealed he kept a record in his notes of his dealings, including price lists and transactions, Lancashire Police said. He was also found to have researched and sent links to stories discussing county lines to his contacts. Despite being in prison, Garnett had communication channels with practically all members of the gang he controlled, the force said. Videos found on the phone of another gang member, Gareth Burgess, 45, of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, but formerly of Blackpool, showed him walking through the resort, carrying a significant amount of cash, and rapping about his criminality. Chloe Stott and Ryan Black were sentenced in their absence as they failed to appear at court for sentencing and a warrant is now out for their arrest. Three held as drugs in socks and fishing line found near prison
Two men and a 13-year-old boy have been arrested after drug-filled socks attached to a fishing line were found near a Police said officers on "a proactive patrol" near HMP Ranby spotted a parked car near the jail at about 21:00 BST on men were detained and an empty drone case and fishing line were found in the boot of the vehicle.A bag of socks filled with drugs, needles and other items was found in a nearby bush, a force spokesman said, with a drone attached to a fishing line and tied to a sock with drugs also discovered. All three are currently in custody, police Rob Harrison, neighbourhood policing inspector for Bassetlaw, said: "The neighbourhood team has been working very hard over recent months, alongside prison staff, to tackle the problems associated with drugs being taken into HMP Ranby."This latest stop has allowed us to prevent these drugs being conveyed into the prison and the substances will now be destroyed."
