Today Extra's Sylvia Jeffreys breaks down in tears over sickening details relating to childcare worker being charged with 70 child sex offences
The Victorian Department of Health and Victoria Police are urging the parents of 1,200 children to have them tested for infectious diseases after 26-year-old Joshua Dale Brown's alleged offending was revealed on Tuesday.
Brown, from Point Cook, southwest of Melbourne, is facing charges including the sexual penetration of a child, producing child abuse material and recklessly contaminating goods to cause alarm or anxiety.
Jeffreys, herself a mother of two, was brought to tears as she reported on the incident on the breakfast show she co-hosts with David Campbell.
'They are all allegations at this point of course, but they have rocked every parent, they have rocked the industry,' she began.

'It is deeply disturbing, but it is not an isolated incident. There have been media reports for many months now of abuse and neglect in for-profit childcare centres,' she continued.
'The system has failed these families. The system has failed these children, and it has failed the many wonderful educators who work in the industry as well.'
Jeffreys struggled to choke back tears as she said 'nothing could be more urgent than this issue right now'.
'There will be parents this morning who will feel reluctant to drop their child at daycare today, and that should never be the case,' she said as her voice trembled.
'I'm sorry,' she added as co-host Richard Wilkins wrapped an arm around his co-host.
'It is so hard to even talk about it let alone go through this. The parents who are going through this, this morning,' Jeffreys continued.
'It needs to be at the top of the federal government's agenda today and tomorrow and every day until we see change.'
The alleged offending happened during Brown's time at Creative Garden Early Learning Centre Point Cook, where he worked between October 2021 and February 2024.
In December 2021, Brown's partner posted a photo of the pair which featured the alleged paedophile grinning with pink and blue dyed hair.
Pictures also emerged on Tuesday of a tattooed Brown interacting with children at one of the 20 daycare centres where he worked.
Police are also investigating allegations of other offending at a childcare centre in Essendon.
Brown worked at a total of 20 childcare centres over an eight-year period between January 2017 and May 2025, and authorities have contacted 2,600 families of children who attended the centres in a bid to have them tested for unnamed diseases.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said she was 'sickened by these allegations of abuse'.
Brown has remained in custody since his arrest in mid-May. His Point Cook home was raided by police shortly after an investigation was launched earlier that same month.
He was not known to police before his arrest and had a valid Working With Children Check, which has since been cancelled.
Brown will next appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on September 15.

Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn said an investigation into whether there was anything educators could have done would begin immediately.
She said the department would consider other security measures, including the introduction of security cameras.
'Childcare is regulated in a national context… it's complex, but there has been an occasion over the last period of time in which jurisdictions have questioned the adequacy of the national law and have been working with the Commonwealth on how we can improve it,' she said.
'One of the areas, for example, … that I would like to see brought forward is a national system for registration for workers.'
Victoria Police Acting Commander Janet Stevenson said the case had been 'deeply distressing'.
She did not reveal what sparked the police investigation but assured the public no other childcare workers were alleged to be involved.
'We know there are potentially people out there who have information about this investigation that they wish to pass on to police,' she said.
'This may be people who had children at a centre where the man worked or staff who may have worked with him and noticed particular behaviours.'

Bridgend unexploded devices found on college building site
Two unexploded ordnance devices found in a town centre were discovered during construction of a new college campus, the local council has businesses were evacuated and a main road was shut after police were called to a building site in Cheapside, Bridgend, on of Brackla Street was temporarily cordoned off as a safety measure, while premises including Aldi, Asda, and Brackla House were also evacuated while the devices were "safely removed" by the Ministry of council said the discovery was made by contractors working on the multi-million pound new college campus project. It added a survey was now being arranged to check for further unexploded devices at the site, though building work was expected to resume as discovery comes after a separate incident in 2008, where about 80 shells were found in the area during the construction phase of the nearby were thought to have come from a munitions factory which was producing explosives at the site during World War Two.

Freedom Flotilla activists say they were ‘brutalised psychologically' by Israeli military after aid boat boarded
Two Australian activists have claimed they were 'brutalised psychologically' by the Israeli military, strip-searched and shackled, after their Freedom Flotilla boat was intercepted. Journalist Tania Safi and activist Robert Martin were detained while onboard the Handala, which was seeking to deliver aid to Gaza as part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. After their arrest alongside 19 other activists on Sunday, the pair were transported to Israel and spent days in Israeli custody, where they allege they were manhandled and treated like criminals. The Handala was carrying 21 civilians representing 12 countries - including the UK - with parliamentarians, lawyers, journalists, environmentalists, and other human rights defenders among them. It was carrying aid including baby formula, nappies, food, and medicine for the Gaza strip, where a starvation crisis has prompted international outcry after dozens of Palestinians died from hunger-related causes in recent weeks. Experts, the UN, and other countries say Israeli blockades caused the crisis. The Israeli government says Hamas is at fault and has accused the Palestinian militants of stealing food from aid trucks. The two Australian activists landed back in Sydney on Friday morning, where they spoke to reporters about their ordeal. Ms Safi said at least 30 IDF members boarded Handala when it was intercepted, and claimed all were armed, some with four guns. 'They knocked me in the leg with one of their machine guns,' Ms Safi said of the moment around 30 IDF soldiers boarded the Handala after it was intercepted, speaking to The Guardian. After being taken to the port of Ashdod south of Tel Aviv, the group was taken to interrogation rooms. Ms Safi supported earlier allegations by the group that Chris Smalls, the former president of the Amazon Labour Union who was onboard the Handala, was physically assaulted by IDF troops. 'Chris was pinned down by seven or eight men,' she told the outlet. 'When I asked about him they came into the room and dragged me out by my arms, I'm still bruised from it. 'They pulled me out and threw me down on the floor, they made me take off all my clothes, they strip-searched me right there, made me squat up and down … they treated us like we were criminals.' Ms Safi, who said she witnessed 'the soullessness and the cruelty and brutality' of Israeli detention, added that soldiers would 'handcuff me and grab the handcuffs and just throw me against the wall'. She said the military tried to get the Handala activists to sign documents which said they had entered Israel illegally, which Ms Safi says is 'not true… we were taken completely against our will and brutalised psychologically in every way'. Mr Martin alleged he was not allowed any of the medication that he required, nor was he allowed to make any phone calls to loved ones and 'anybody else' - despite the Australian government demanding to Israel that they were allowed to do so. They were eventually transported to Jordan, where they were assisted by the Australian embassy and taken to hospital, he added. The Handala incident came nearly two months after the Madleen, a Freedom Flotilla with Swedish activist Greta Thunberg on board, was intercepted by the Israeli army on 9 June. The IDF has been contacted for comment. In a statement on X after the boat was seized, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said the military had prevented the boat from 'illegally entering the maritime zone of the coast of Gaza'. It added: 'The vessel is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. All passengers are safe. Unauthorized attempts to breach the blockade are dangerous, unlawful, and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts.' Regarding the alleged assault on Mr Smalls, the Israeli foreign ministry told The Guardian on Thursday: 'Contrary to the claims made, the passenger violently resisted. This was a planned provocation intended to create media attention.'
