Jets' Justin Fields 'relieved' after dislocated toe injury scare
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields is 'relieved' his dislocated toe wasn't a more serious injury that could've sidelined him for a significant part of training camp.
Fields, scheduled to be the Jets' starter, was injured last Thursday during practice when a teammate accidentally stepped on his right foot and dislocated one of his toes. The quarterback sat out practice the next day, did 7-on-7 drills last Saturday and then after a day off, returned to 11-on-11 team drills Monday.
He was again leading the offense Tuesday, when the Jets were in pads for a second day in a row.
'I'm very relieved,' Fields said in his first comments to reporters since the injury. 'God was definitely looking out. I'm just blessed to be here today, blessed to be on the practice field.'
Jets fans and social media were sent into a panic when the injury occurred and Fields was carted from the field to the facility, where he had multiple tests before the team announced the diagnosis a few hours later.
'We get our feet stepped on all the time at practice, so it just felt normal at first when I first got stepped on,' Fields said. "Tried walking off and it felt weird, like something was almost stuck in my toe. So, I didn't really know what to think. I just knew something was wrong. So, I just went to the sidelines, got carted, and got the MRI and X-ray. And, luckily, they said I just dislocated it.
'So, God was definitely looking out that day, but I'm glad to be back on the field working.'
His quick return relieved fears from fans that it could be an even more significant injury.
'Yeah, my phone blew up a little bit, of course,' Fields said with a slight smile. 'But like I said, once I got the results back, everything was all good after that.'
Fields said a protective covering was placed in his right cleat by head athletic trainer Dave Zuffelato and he'll wear it during the next several weeks as he continues to heal.
'Almost like a little steel toe, but it's a plastic toe,' Fields said while knocking on the shoe.
Fields said he felt his mobility was a bit limited the first few days. But he ran a handful of times during practice Tuesday and showed no signs of the injury.
Overall, it wasn't a great day for Fields and the offense, who were mostly outplayed by the defense. Fields also had a few receivers drop passes. But he ended the team period in a two-minute drive by connecting with rookie tight end Mason Taylor in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.
'I think we started off very slow at the start,' Fields said. 'At the end of practice, the last period, I think we ramped it up a bit. Definitely want to come out with a stronger start. We can't warm up to things, we can't have a few bad reps and then bring it all up and talk with each other then decide to, 'All right, let's go.' It's got to be right out the gate.'

Red Sox starter Tanner Houck to undergo Tommy John surgery
BOSTON — Red Sox starter Tanner Houck will undergo Tommy John surgery, manager Alex Cora announced Saturday. Boston initially placed the 29-year-old righty on the 15-day injured list May 14 with a right flexor pronator strain. On Thursday, the Sox transferred him to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for trade addition Dustin May. 'We don't have a date yet but he's going to have (the surgery),' Cora said before Saturday's game against the Houston Astros. He'll miss the rest of this season and his entire 2026 season is in doubt. Houck, who was a 2024 American League All-Star, struggled in nine starts for Boston this year. He posted an 8.04 ERA (43 ⅔ innings, 39 earned runs) before landing on the injured list. 'Tough year for him,' Cora said. 'Tough year for us. But he'll kill the rehab. He'll do his job and whenever he comes back, he'll be OK.' The 2017 first round draft pick underwent an MRI when he initially was placed on the IL. He attempted a rehab assignment but struggled to bounce back after starts. On July 1, he said he was still dealing with inflammation in the triceps. He allowed 10 runs in 15 ⅔ innings (5.74 ERA) on 18 hits and six walks while striking out 15 over five rehab outings (four starts). Four of those five outings came with Worcester. One outing was with Double-A Portland. Cora said he does not have the exact details of when the tear showed up on an MRI. He also had imaging done after being pulled off his rehab assignment July 21. 'I know that throughout the whole process, there were different opinions and that was the last one,' Cora said. 'And Tanner decided to go with that one.' Boston selected Houck 24th overall out of Mizzou in '17. He has a 3.97 ERA in 113 outings (80 starts) over six major league seasons (2020-25). He posted a 2.54 ERA in 19 starts before the All-Star break in 2024. He then struggled some during the second half with a 4.23 ERA in 11 starts. He spent time on the IL in 2023 with a facial fracture and lower back inflammation. But he had not previously spent any time on the IL in his major league career with an arm injury. Red Sox' Tanner Houck on Tommy John surgery: ‘I've made peace with it'
Red Sox starter Tanner Houck said he's at peace with his decision to undergo Tommy John surgery. 'It's unfortunate,' Houck said Sunday at Fenway Park. 'It sucks. It's a fun team to watch. It's a fun team to be around. And just knowing I'm not going to be a part of it for the rest of the year, it's hard. But I know I'll bounce back better from this." Dr. Keith Meister will perform the surgery at some point this week. The 29-year-old righty said 'probably midweek.' He and Dr. Meister have not yet discussed if he might be able to return late in the 2026 season, but Houck is hopeful. "I know the minimum is probably around the 12-month mark, 12- to the 14-month mark," Houck said. 'With that being said, if everything goes right, 12 months from now, plan on being back out there, running out to the mound at Fenway. But you also got to do it the smart way, the correct way. And I gotta be honest with myself. If there's a point in this where it doesn't feel right and I need to take a step back, it's what we're gonna need to do. But I'm gonna do everything in my power to get back out there at this time next year and be essentially a trade deadline piece." Houck underwent an initial MRI back when he was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right flexor pronator strain May 14. The first MRI showed a good amount of inflammation in the flexor, he said. The second MRI came after his five rehab outings for Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland. He began feeling 'a lot of discomfort in the hand' as well as discomfort in his triceps during the All-Star Break. He said the additional imaging showed 'significantly worse' damage. 'Flexor was torn a good bit,' Houck said. 'But just didn't feel right throwing, didn't feel normal kind of the way that I operate at a high whippy volume. Just never really felt like it got back to normal.' He said there were alternatives to the surgery but there was also a thought those other routes were just 'delaying the inevitable' and he would eventually need the surgery. 'You can go the PRP route, stem cells, kind of those things,' Houck said. He said undergoing the procedure was ultimately the best decision for the longevity of his career. 'I want to pitch for another 10 years, 10-plus years,' he said. 'And looking at a longevity standpoint, this is just the road that we decided to take.' He pointed to both teammates Garrett Whitlock and Lucas Giolito who have returned strong this season after undergoing arm surgeries last year. Whitlock underwent a right elbow ulnar collateral ligament repair in May 2024. Giolito underwent an internal brace procedure to repair his damaged elbow in March 2024. 'Look at what they've done this year, it's incredible," Houck said. 'So it's just about trusting day to day work. It's gonna be long, it's gonna be hard, but I'm ready for it. I've made peace with it myself. Had a lot of long conversations with my wife — early mornings, late nights talking about it.'
