Cancel culture is just public shaming with wi-fi — Hanan Addeena Arman

JULY 21 — We all make mistakes. Some big, some small. But now, thanks to social media, a single wrong move can become a viral moment—and sometimes, it ruins lives. That's the reality of cancel culture.
At first, cancel culture seemed like a good thing. It gave power to the people. When big celebrities or companies did something offensive or harmful, they were finally held accountable.
No more sweeping things under the rug. It felt like justice.
But somewhere along the way, cancel culture stopped being about accountability. Now, it often feels more like public punishment. Social media acts like judge and jury, with millions of people piling on, calling names, and demanding consequences—without context, without facts, and most importantly, without compassion.
And it's not just celebrities anymore. It's random people, too. Regular folks caught on camera during a bad moment. Like that schoolboy who once ate on the MRT train. He was probably hungry, maybe just had a long day, and made a small mistake. But someone decided to film him, post it, and let the internet chew him up.
His face and actions were shown to thousands—maybe millions. All because he brought food on public transport.
He's a teenager. A kid. Not a criminal. But people online don't care. They just want something to be angry about.
This is the scary part of cancel culture. It makes us forget that the people we're attacking are human. They have feelings, families, and personal struggles we'll never know. It turns the internet into a place where people feel afraid to speak, afraid to act, afraid to be imperfect.
Of course, some actions deserve to be called out. Racism, abuse, corruption—those things shouldn't be ignored. But there's a big difference between calling something out and tearing someone down. Accountability means giving people a chance to understand, apologize, and grow.

Cancel culture doesn't always leave space for that. It's more like, 'You messed up. You're done. Forever.'
And what message does that send? That people can't change? That one mistake defines your whole life?
Even worse, cancel culture can silence important conversations. People stop sharing opinions or asking questions out of fear they'll say the wrong thing and be 'cancelled.' It creates a culture of fear instead of one of learning. And when we're too scared to talk, how can we grow?
The media plays a huge role in this too. News outlets love stories that spark outrage. Headlines are designed to grab attention, not to explain. And when a person is being dragged online, the media often joins in instead of helping people understand the full story. The more clicks, the better. But at what cost?
We need to start bringing empathy back into the conversation. Before we share that video, before we comment on something cruel, before we hit repost—ask: Who is this person? What's the full story? Are they really a villain, or just someone who made a mistake?
Social media is powerful. It can expose injustice, uplift voices, and create change. But when it's used to destroy instead of educate, to shame instead of understand, we all lose.
Everyone deserves a second chance. Everyone deserves to be seen as more than their worst moment.
So maybe instead of cancelling people, we start teaching. Listening. Forgiving. Because a kinder internet starts with each of us choosing empathy over outrage.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri did not offer bail for the accused, who was unrepresented, saying the charge against him was serious. The court fixed Aug 24 for mention.

Ismanira Abdul Manaf said she could not understand why the investigating officer described her as being expressionless. PETALING JAYA : Ismanira Abdul Manaf, the mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, denied glazing over when questioned by police over the disappearance of her six-year-old son, who was later found dead. The 30-year-old told the sessions court today she had been crying all day while searching for Zayn, who went missing at about noon on Dec 5, 2023, before investigating officer Nina Syamimi Syamsuddin arrived at her apartment at 10.30pm that day. Ismanira's lawyer, Haresh Mahadevan, had asked her to explain the officer's claim during the defence stage of the trial. Nina, the fourth prosecution witness, had testified in February that Ismanira had a 'glazed look' when she recorded Ismanira's statement. Ismanira said she did not understand why Nina had described her as being expressionless. 'After my son went missing, everything felt gloomy and painful. 'I cried the entire day. She only arrived late at night. At that point, all I could think about was Zayn,' she said. She said after failing to find Zayn that day, she filed a police report at about 4.30pm and was told to contact Nina. The officer then instructed her to go to the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters. She arrived at 7pm but Nina phoned her to say she was attending to another case and asked her to wait. Later, Nina allegedly told Ismanira to return home as a resident had informed police they had seen Zayn running along the apartment corridor. Ismanira said she reached home at 8.30pm and found many people had already gathered at her apartment block to help with the search. Earlier today, judge Syahliza Warnoh ordered Ismanira to enter her defence on a charge of neglecting her autistic son. Her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, 30, was acquitted. Ismanira chose to testify under oath from the witness stand. During the proceedings, the court had to stand down for about 10 minutes as Ismanira was seen sobbing when giving her testimony. The couple had been charged last year with neglecting Zayn in a manner likely to cause him physical harm. The alleged offence took place between noon on Dec 5, 2023, when Zayn was reported missing, and 9.55pm the following day, when his body was discovered in a stream near their home at Apartment Idaman, Damansara Damai. The charge is framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. Upon conviction, it carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both. Haresh, Ramzani Idris and Lavanesh Haresh appeared for the defence, while deputy public prosecutors Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz and Nur Sabrina Zubairi prosecuted. The trial continues tomorrow.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) has urged the government to ensure accountability after the Auditor-General's Report 2025 flagged issues involving several projects worth hundreds of millions of ringgit. TI-M president Raymon Ram said the report unveiled irregularities and systemic weaknesses in financial management and procurement oversight, necessitating structural reforms. Raymon said such issues were not new and had been repeatedly flagged by the audit department, but they had continued because of outdated procedures, weak oversight and a culture of impunity. 'Where is the accountability for all these lapses? 'The government must take a firm stance and hold the leadership accountable for discrepancies involving public funds. 'These recurring findings highlight institutional weaknesses that demand more than administrative corrections; they require structural reform,' he said in a statement. Raymon said the revelations further erode the confidence of Malaysians in public institutions. The A-G's report flagged serious issues on how more than RM460 million of government funds was spent on land deals, university tenders, and defence contracts between 2020 and 2024, naming Felcra Bhd, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and the army. He urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the police to initiate investigations into these issues to look into the possibility of fraud, abuse of power or negligence. He also called on the relevant government ministries, departments and agencies to disclose the remedial actions they would take within 30 days to show responsibility and ensure public confidence. The government must make it mandatory for independent third-party experts to be roped in to monitor high-risk procurements under 'integrity pacts', involving civil society and professionals from the private sector, he said. Raymon also urged Putrajaya to table a comprehensive public procurement law that outlines transparency standards, penalties for non-compliance and clear procurement dispute mechanisms. 'The A-G's report must not be an annual ritual of regret. 'It must serve as a catalyst for reform, one that rebuilds institutional integrity, ensures justice for wrongdoing and protects the interests of the rakyat,' he said.
