Disgraced Hogg too injured for abuse hearing... so his mum and dad go instead
Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg is fully complying with a community payback order into his domestic abuse conviction, a court was told yesterday. As a result, a sheriff ruled the supervision order would be allowed to continue until it expires next January without any further review taking place. The 32-year-old full back did not attend and is currently recovering from the ruptured achilles tendon on his left ankle. Hogg, who now lives in the south of France and is under contract to Montpellier until 2027, has publicly acknowledged the support he has received from his parents John and Margaret Hogg from Hawick, Roxburghshire. He wrote on Instagram last week: 'Grateful to have had my parents over in Montpellier for the past five or so weeks. 'Being stuck in crutches has been a challenging time so to have their support means everything.' They also showed their loyal support for their son by turning up at the court yesterday for the review hearing - which lasted less than a minute - despite him being excused attendance. They heard defence lawyer Mat Patrick state: 'This is the second review of this order. My submission is that the order should be allowed to continue.' Sheriff Peter Paterson said the only issue unclear was whether Hogg was still remaining to live in France to which Mr Patrick replied: 'That is his intention.' The sheriff concluded: 'Given that there has been full compliance by Mr Hogg I will call for no further review.' Hogg was sentenced to one year of supervision as an alternative to custody in January after pleading guilty to a domestic abuse charge involving his estranged wife Gillian over the course of five years. He admitted shouting and swearing, tracking her movements and sending her messages which were alarming and distressing in nature. The court heard he berated Mrs Hogg- who he has four children with - for 'not being fun' after going on drinking binges with his team-mates and once sent more than 200 text messages in the space of a few hours. Hogg was banned from approaching or contacting Mrs Hogg for five years after admitting breaching his bail conditions by repeatedly contacting her and was fined £600 with a £40 Victim Surcharge. The couple are now going through divorce proceedings. Hogg's new girlfriend Leona Mayer gave birth to a baby son, Teddy John, in February. After being capped 100 times for Scotland and also represented the British Lions Hogg retired from professional rugby in July 2023 but last summer it was announced he was returning after signing for Montpellier on a two-year contract. The former Glasgow Warriors and Exeter Chiefs player was made an MBE for services to rugby in last year's New Year Honours list. However, SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn has called for Hogg to be stripped of his MBE in the wake of the court case.
