Kollam candidates achieve top ranks in civil services exam 2024
T'puram: Kollam is celebrating as three of its candidates secured spots in the top 100 of UPSC civil services exam, the results of which were announced on Tuesday.

's became the state topper by securing the 45th rank, Kollam native
GP Nandana
(23) came second in state as she secured the 47th rank.

She is the youngest rank holder from Kerala this year. A native of Valakom near Kottarakkara, she completed her degree in English literature from Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram. After graduation, she enrolled at Fortune IAS Academy in the state capital for civil services coaching.
Nandana said she was happy with her rank. "It's a dream come true. I received excellent coaching and that helped me secure a good rank.
I prefer Kerala cadre and I hope to get a posting here," she said. This was her second attempt, after narrowly missing out the first time. Nandana's parents are school teachers and she credits them for her success.
Another top performer is Pathanapuram native
Reenu Anna Mathews
(25), who bagged the 81st rank. Mathews, who completed her graduation from St Stephen's College, New Delhi, did her civil services training at iLearn IAS Academy in Thiruvananthapuram.
She succeeded in her fourth attempt. "I opted for foreign service as my first choice, but I would also be happy to work in Kerala cadre," she said. Her father Mathew George is a retired shipping officer while her mother Ani Mathew is a housewife.
The third candidate from the district is Devika Priyadarshini (29), who secured the 95th rank. Originally from Chathannoor, Devika now lives in Valiyavila, Thiruvananthapuram, with her husband, Aravind MJ, a commercial pilot.

She cleared the exam in her very first attempt. Priyadarshini, who trained at iLearn IAS Academy, said she would be happy to get a posting under Kerala cadre.
'Becoming a collector was my dream'
Kottayam: Mundakayam native Sonnet Jose (24), who secured the 54th rank in the UPSC civil service exam, said she nursed a dream of becoming a collector right from her childhood. "I was part of the student police cadets during my school days and I got a chance to interact with people who lived in tribal villages," she said, adding that this was one of the reasons for pursuing her dream.
After schooling in Mundakayam and Kanjirappally, she did her graduation in physics from Miranda House in New Delhi. After graduation, she joined a training academy in Thiruvananthapuram. "This was my second attempt. In my first attempt, I reached the interview phase. I thank my parents and teachers who encouraged me to achieve my dream," she said.

Nagpur: For the first time in Nagpur's civic polls, two factions of Shiv Sena and NCP will be vying to establish their base. While both parties had maintained a strong presence at the state level, they were unable to meet expectations in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections even before the split. People have told us they are fed up with the Mahayuti and want change," he said. Pethe also outlined the party's development plans for the city. "We will address issues related to school fees and garbage collection. English medium schools will be started under NMC to ensure free education for children. We also need to properly plan hawkers' zones to improve traffic management. Merely building flyovers doesn't enhance the city's beauty," he added. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Nitin Tiwari said people will place their trust in the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction. "Sena UBT has been at the forefront, fighting for Nagpurians' rights. We have staged multiple agitations, exposed corruption by contractors in civic affairs, and questioned the deterioration of the city's infrastructure. Our party will transform city governance by providing transparent and efficient administration," he told TOI. His party colleague Kishore Kumeriya said, "The real DNA of Shiv Sainiks is rooted in the teachings of Balasaheb Thackeray, and that spirit resides in UBT. Sena UBT is filled with grassroots-level workers. Moreover, people have witnessed the commendable work done by Uddhav Thackeray during his tenure as CM." On the other hand, Shiv Sena ( Eknath Shinde faction) leader Mangesh Kashikar claimed his party is poised for significant gains. "Our strength is growing, and prominent faces from Sena (UBT) and other parties have joined us. In the coming week, more big names will join. Statistically, we had only two seats in NMC earlier, so there is little to lose. Our internal assessments suggest that we will win 12 seats this time," he said.

Video of TMC councillor's street brawl with another woman goes viral, she blames ‘reckless driving'
After a video of a street brawl involving two women, one being a TMC councillor, went viral, Panihati municipal authorities in North 24 Parganas said the incident would be investigated, and appropriate action would be taken. Local TMC councillor Srabanti Roy, however, said she would not file a police complaint against the other woman, citing her young age, and added that the brawl happened after the young woman's Scooty hit her bike. In the viral video, the councillor is seen slapping a young woman, who retaliates by grabbing Roy's hair and hitting her. As passersby watch, the two women fight, oblivious to attempts by locals to intervene. The two women were eventually stopped from fighting by traffic police. The incident reportedly took place on Monday near Panihati Mahotsavtala Ghat. Roy is councillor of Ward No. 26 in Panihati municipality. Roy on Wednesday told mediapersons that the confrontation began when the young woman's Scooty allegedly hit her bike. Roy claimed that she dismounted to protest and warn the young woman about 'reckless driving'. 'I consider it my duty as a public representative to warn her. But the young woman responded with abuse and took my bike keys. As I protested, I was attacked,' Roy said. 'A section of the media is making a big deal out of my slapping the young woman. But in the video, you can clearly see her actions,' she said. Roy said she was not keen to file a police complaint against the woman, as 'she is young, and I don't want any repercussions for her. However, the Opposition BJP used the incident to accuse the TMC of 'goondaism' and claimed that people were 'no more afraid of the ruling party'. 'This is not a mere scuffle between two women. The lady in white salwar kameez is an elected representative. She is the TMC councillor Srabanti Roy. Make Inter marks basis of undergrad admission to end coaching madness: TEC
1 2 Hyderabad: To counter commercialisation of education, the Telangana Education Commission (TEC) on Wednesday recommended that the state reconsider the need for competitive exams such as EAPCET for undergraduate admissions into engineering, pharmacy and agriculture courses. The TEC, which conducted a public hearing on Intermediate education, suggested that Intermediate marks be made the basis for admissions instead. "To reduce the craze for coaching and to end the commercialisation of education, the Intermediate exam should be strengthened further and made the basis for admissions. This model is working quite well in states such as Tamil Nadu," said PL Vishweshwar Rao, member, TEC. The commission, along with other stakeholders, also suggested strengthening public junior colleges with semi-residential models, English medium, nutritious meals, and career counselling. They also stressed on appointment of officers in mandals for monitoring and coordination, enforcing fee regulation, curbing misleading advertisements and unauthorised colleges, and reviving interest in arts and humanities to align Intermediate education with career pathways and higher education goals. At the hearing, various issues were highlighted including lack of transportation, infrastructure gaps, lack of teachers, health and safety, mobile addiction, dropouts due to distance and poverty among others. "One student aspiring to be a civil servant said that she had to drop out as there was no govt junior college nearby. We asked her if she would be interested in studying in a welfare residential school and even convinced her family to enrol her in a gurukul school," said commission chairman Akunuri Murali. Several students also shared stories of financial hardship, loss of parents and lack of access to affordable education even after scoring well in Class 10.
