Video of TMC councillor's street brawl with another woman goes viral, she blames ‘reckless driving'

After a video of a street brawl involving two women, one being a TMC councillor, went viral, Panihati municipal authorities in North 24 Parganas said the incident would be investigated, and appropriate action would be taken.
Local TMC councillor Srabanti Roy, however, said she would not file a police complaint against the other woman, citing her young age, and added that the brawl happened after the young woman's Scooty hit her bike.
In the viral video, the councillor is seen slapping a young woman, who retaliates by grabbing Roy's hair and hitting her. As passersby watch, the two women fight, oblivious to attempts by locals to intervene. The two women were eventually stopped from fighting by traffic police.
The incident reportedly took place on Monday near Panihati Mahotsavtala Ghat. Roy is councillor of Ward No. 26 in Panihati municipality.
Roy on Wednesday told mediapersons that the confrontation began when the young woman's Scooty allegedly hit her bike. Roy claimed that she dismounted to protest and warn the young woman about 'reckless driving'. 'I consider it my duty as a public representative to warn her. But the young woman responded with abuse and took my bike keys. As I protested, I was attacked,' Roy said.
'A section of the media is making a big deal out of my slapping the young woman. But in the video, you can clearly see her actions,' she said.
Roy said she was not keen to file a police complaint against the woman, as 'she is young, and I don't want any repercussions for her.
However, the Opposition BJP used the incident to accuse the TMC of 'goondaism' and claimed that people were 'no more afraid of the ruling party'.
'This is not a mere scuffle between two women. The lady in white salwar kameez is an elected representative. She is the TMC councillor Srabanti Roy. Good to see that people are not bowing down under TMC's fear and rather standing up against this sort of goondaism,' BJP leader Keya Ghosh wrote on X.

Perfect driving record: Gurgaon's first ‘traffic champions' set an example

Gurgaon: A fine arts graduate, a 52-year-old and the son of a BJP functionary were among five city residents to be felicitated by the traffic police on Thursday. Cops scoured hundreds of hours of CCTV footage from last month to shortlist the city's first "traffic champions". Shyam Jee Bhan, Ajay, Priya, Mamta and Surender Gahlot – all of them commuters who regularly drive – were on Thursday called to DCP (traffic) Rajesh Kumar Mohan's office in Sector 28 and awarded 'letters of appreciation' because they did not violate any traffic rules all through May and never received a challan. DCP Mohan said this ceremony was part of police's new initiative – 'Drive Right, Shine Bright' – to encourage people to drive safely. Every month, police will scan footage from the Integrated City Control Centre (ICCC), which is linked to traffic cameras around Gurgaon, to search for "champions" like Bhan and Priya. "Our aim is not to generate revenue through challans but to also recognise the sincerity and discipline of those commuters who never get challaned and don't put lives at risk. They are the real traffic heroes, and everyone should recognise them and learn from them," the DCP said at the event on Thursday. He added that police will be "more than happy" if they "don't get a chance to challan anyone". Shyam Jee Bhan, a resident of DLF-2, said he was "sceptical" when he first got a call from police. "One gets cautious if the police are calling you. Eventually, I got it confirmed through a friend that Gurgaon traffic police have initiated a unique campaign, and I am among the first traffic champions here," Bhan said. The 52-year-old told TOI he moved to Gurgaon in 1998 and has always followed traffic rules. "I urge all commuters to follow traffic rules. These days, everyone wants to be ahead of others, but a little caution can avoid road rage incidents too," he said. The letter of appreciation given to Bhan commended him for not breaking any traffic rules in May, and never having a challan issued against his car. "It demonstrates outstanding discipline and civic responsibility on your part. Your conduct contributes to safer roads, smoother traffic, and sets a powerful example for fellow citizens," the award read. Priya, a 23-year-old who recently completed her BA in fine arts, also urged commuters to drive safely. The Sikanderpur resident said her parents always ask her to follow the rules. "All parents should encourage their children," she added. For Surender Gahlot, son of a BJP functionary, leaving early to reach one's destination in time does the trick. "It helps avoid speeding," he said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Ex-min accuses CM of colluding with BJP in LS polls

1 2 Hyderabad: Former minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy on Thursday launched a scathing attack on both the Congress and BJP, alleging a covert alliance between the two parties in Telangana . He went a step further, accusing chief minister A Revanth Reddy of directly aiding the BJP's victory in eight Lok Sabha seats during the 2024 elections. Speaking at a press conference at Telangana Bhavan, Prashanth Reddy dismissed the CM's claims that both Union minister G Kishan Reddy and BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao were obstructing the state's development. Instead, he alleged that it was Revanth himself who was undermining the Congress and facilitating the BJP's rise. "Even the BJP is protecting Revanth. Not a single ED or IT raid has been conducted against Congress leaders in Telangana," he remarked. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Official work in Hindi, says Haryana education min — ‘I myself do not know English'

Gurgaon: Haryana education minister Mahipal Dhanda has directed his department to conduct all official work in Hindi. "I myself do not know English, and 90% of the people in our state are far from (understanding) English. Therefore, so that people can understand official work, I have ordered all work in the education department to be done in Hindi," the minister said at a press conference in Kurukshetra on Thursday. The announcement was made days after the directorate of higher education issued an order on June 10, saying all official correspondence "must henceforth be presented in Hindi". It also specified that any communication to the education minister and the additional chief secretary (education) should be in Hindi as well. Until now, the state education department had the option to use both Hindi and English. Calling Hindi the "rastrabhasha (national language)", Dhanda said that this policy is not "anti-English". "We are not enemies of English... We are not in favour of stopping English. Knowledge of other languages is also necessary. English-medium schools are still being opened in the state. For me, language is mainly to acquire knowledge, rather than becoming a barrier in practical work," the minister said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo The Indian Constitution does not name any "national language", and both Hindi and English are recognised as "official languages". Dhanda on Wednesday pointed out that the policy is only for official communication and it is not related to academics. "What's the problem in this (policy)? It's a mode of communication, do it in any language... Hindi is better understood by people," a senior education department official in Panchkula said. Dushyant Thakran, a school teacher in Gurgaon, questioned if the policy would make any difference. "Schools are already focused on teaching children English," he said. Before this, controversy has erupted on the implementation of central govt's NEP, which pushes for a "three-language formula". Tamil Nadu govt has accused the Centre of trying to impose Hindi on the state, though the BJP govt has denied the charge as an unnecessary controversy.
