Argentina-bound All Blacks rookie forced to scramble after dog eats passport
Utility back Carter, named among the injury replacements in Scott Robertson's All Blacks squad, found his passport ruined on his bed and had to scramble to arrange a new one.
"I got my passport out to take a photo to send to the (team) manager and I just left it on my bedside table," the 26-year-old told New Zealand media.
"My partner went to the gym and left my dog home alone and it's gone down the hallway, jumped on the bed and just chewed up the passport and my teeth aligners.
"It was a bit of a shambles yesterday. I was trying to get an emergency one but I think it's all sussed (sorted) now.
"I thought it would happen to me, something like that, so no point getting stressed about it, just trying to sort it out."
Most of the All Blacks squad will fly out on Friday for Argentina where they play their Rugby Championship opener against the Pumas in Cordoba next week.
Carter, who represented New Zealand in rugby sevens at the Paris Olympics and won a bronze with the squad at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, earned his first All Blacks call-up after his debut season with the Waikato Chiefs in Super Rugby.
Carter said he was out for breakfast with his partner and some of his teammates from provincial side Bay of Plenty when Robertson called to confirm his selection on Monday.
"I got an unknown-number call. I guess I thought if there was a day to answer those it was probably (that day) and he just said congratulations," said Carter.
"I honestly can't really remember what else he said after that. I was pretty emotional and pretty stoked to get a phone call like that.

Vivian hopes for Hoo-ray from younger brother
KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles star Vivian Hoo's World Championships adventure ended in January with her retirement. Now, her family legacy is being continued by her younger brother, Hoo Pang Ron. Pang Ron will compete in the mixed doubles at the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25–31. Vivian, 35, a two-time Commonwealth Games champion, hopes her 27-year-old brother can achieve his goals. Pang Ron, who made his World Championships debut with Cheah Yee See in 2021, will partner Cheng Su Yin in his second world appearance. They are seeded 13th in Paris. Vivian played in the World Championships seven times with various partners. "I'm definitely happy to see my brother continue the legacy. But I don't compare my achievements with his because everyone has their own journey. "For me, as long as he can make his own breakthroughs and reach his personal goals, that's already a big achievement," she said. Vivian won gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games (New Delhi) and 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar with Woon Khe Wei, and the pair's career-high world ranking was No. 9. She also won a second Commonwealth Games gold with Chow Mei Kuan in 2018, Gold Coast, Australia. World No. 16 Pang Ron-Su Yin, however, are going through a rough patch, and Vivian hopes that they can bounce back at the World Championships. The Pang Ron-Su Yin combination, formed in October 2023 by national coach Nova Widianto, finished second at the China Masters last November, but have struggled since then. They only reached the last eight at the Indonesia Masters in January and Orleans Masters in March. The 22-year-old Su Yin has been struggling to cope with the pressure of the rigorous World Tour. "Recently they've been quite down because of their performance. I just hope they can find their form again and give it their best," said Vivian. "I think it's normal, and everyone will go through this process. I am hoping to see them overcome it and come back stronger in Paris."

Malaysia's Turbo Grandpa dies at 95
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's oldest sprinter Pushpanathan Letchmanan, known as Turbo Grandpa, has died at the age of 95. He passed away on Wednesday at Ipoh General Hospital after falling at home. Pushpanathan leaves behind a wife, daughter and two grandchildren. Pushpanathan was a legend who ran in his 90s and even outran younger athletes. Representing Perak, Pushpanathan wasn't chasing trophies, he was chasing purpose. Pushpanathan was an English teacher from SM Raja Chulan in Ipoh who took up athletics late in his life. He made his debut at the Malaysian Open Masters in 2018. He clocked 32.4 seconds in the 100m at the age of 93 to finish fourth in a category for men aged 75 and above. He was the only nonagenarian runner in the event. In 2023, Pushpanathan won the 100m gold in 28.74s ahead of India's Kirpal Singh (45.78s) in the 90-94 age group at the Malaysian International Open Masters in Kuala Lumpur. In the same meeting, he ran the 200m in 88.8s to finish second. Pushpanathan co-founded Swifts Athletics Club in Ipoh with Suppiah Ramalingam, helping to shape athletes like track queen M Rajamani. He also served for over 60 years as a technical officer at national and international meets, including the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. The funeral ceremony for Pushpanathan will be held today at Six Pearls Funeral Parlour, Jalan Madras, Ipoh, followed by cremation at Buntong Crematorium.
