India Today26-05-2025

Kerala reported 335 fresh Covid-19 infections, pushing the total active caseload in the state to 430. Kerala, along with Maharashtra and Delhi, recorded the highest number of new cases in the country over the past week.Last week, Health Minister Veena George urged people to remain vigilant while reporting on the active cases in the state. She cited rising cases in countries like Hong Kong and Singapore, where Omicron JN1 sub-variants LF.7 and NB.1.8, known for their higher transmission rates, were driving the spread.advertisementOn Wednesday, George told local media that a meeting of the state's Rapid Response Team was held to discuss the measures to curb the spike in cases. While addressing the media, she revealed that Kottayam district, at that time, led with 57 active Covid cases, with Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram close behind with 34 and 30 active cases respectively.
'Covid cases are being reported in large numbers in South East Asian countries and there is a possibility of an increase in Covid in Kerala as well,' George said. 'While the severity is not high, self-defence is important.'A high-level meeting of the state Rapid Response Team was held under her leadership last week. Following the review, it was decided that testing would be ramped up for symptomatic individuals, RTPCR kits and safety equipment would be stocked up at hospitals, and masks would be made mandatory inside hospitals. Health workers are now required to wear masks at all times.Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in its recent report revealed that there were 1,009 active cases of Covid in India, with a surge of cases also being reported from Maharashtra and Delhi. India reports 3 Covid-19 deaths, 324 new cases; active tally rises to 6,815

India's active Covid-19 case tally rose to 6,815 with 324 fresh cases reported in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released on Tuesday. Three deaths were also recorded during the same period. The fatalities were reported from Delhi, Jharkhand and Kerala. Of the deceased, one was a 44-year-old male with a history of hypothyroidism and hypertension. The other two victims were elderly and suffered from pre-existing respiratory and chronic health conditions. India is currently witnessing a rise in Covid-19 cases, attributed to new variants including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and the recently identified NB.1.8.1 subvariant. Experts advise targeted protection, not mass boosters Health experts have cautioned against launching a mass booster vaccination campaign in response to the current rise. Instead, they advocate targeted protection for high-risk groups such as the elderly, immunocompromised individuals and people with chronic ailments. They recommend that citizens continue practising Covid-appropriate behaviour, including wearing masks, maintaining hand hygiene and avoiding crowded spaces. Government issues advisory, urges caution In light of the rising infections, the central government has issued advisories to states and union territories, calling for readiness and vigilance. Medical professionals have also emphasised the importance of distinguishing between Covid-19 and other seasonal viral fevers, which share symptoms such as fever, fatigue and respiratory discomfort. Vulnerable individuals—especially senior citizens and those with underlying medical issues—have been advised to exercise caution and seek immediate medical care if symptoms develop or worsen. The Indian Medical Association has reiterated the need for preventive measures, including the use of masks and adherence to hygiene practices, to curb the spread of the virus.

The Public Health Committee has decided to strictly enforce the law to strengthen epidemic control as the rains continue. 'Since it is the rainy season, there is a possibility of an increase in diseases such as Hepatitis A, dengue fever, and rabies. Preventive activities should be intensified. Awareness should also be created among the public to ensure environmental cleanliness and personal hygiene,' Manoj Muthedan, Ernakulam district panchayat president, said in the review meeting. 'With Covid cases rising across the state, people should be vigilant and follow practices such as wearing masks, washing hands frequently with soap, and avoiding contact with people if they show symptoms of fever to prevent the spread of the disease,' said Dr Asha Devi, the Ernakulam district medical officer.
