Indian army kills three suspected rebels in contested Kashmir
Muslim-majority Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947.
SRINAGAR, Kashmir - Indian security forces killed three suspected armed rebels in Indian-administered Kashmir on July 28 during a clash in a wildlife reserve, the army said.
The incident occurred in the mountains of Dachigam, around 30 km from the disputed region's main city of Srinagar.
'Three terrorists have been neutralised in an intense firefight,' the Indian army said in a statement on social media.
'Operation continues,' it added.
Muslim-majority Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947, and the neighbours – which both claim the region in full – have fought two wars over its control.
The incident took place near the major Hindu shrine of Amarnath, to which more than 350,000 people from across India have travelled as part of an ongoing pilgrimage.
The army did not immediately identify those killed, but a police officer told AFP on condition of anonymity that they were all 'foreigners'.

Rebel groups have waged an insurgency against Indian rule since 1989, demanding Kashmir's independence or its merger with Pakistan.
The clash comes more than three months after gunmen attacked tourists in Pahalgam, a popular resort town in the restive territory, killing 26 people, mostly Hindus.
Security forces have been hunting for the attackers but they remain at large.
India accused Pakistan of backing the attackers, a charge Islamabad denied, sparking an intense four-day conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals in May that killed more than 70 people on both sides.
Clashes between rebels and government forces have drastically reduced during the last five years, but many local militants have been killed since the Pahalgam attack. AFP

Ukraine has regularly struck Russian crude refineries, pumping stations and ports used for oil and gas exports in drone attacks. Russia plans to increase exports from its western ports to nearly two million barrels per day in August, about 200,000 bpd more than a previous estimate, after two refineries were left with more crude to export after cutting runs following Ukrainian drone attacks. The Ryazan and Novokuibyshevsk refineries, both operated by the Rosneft oil company, halted operations on several crude distillation units following the drone strikes on August 2. KUALA LUMPUR – Cambodia and Thailand's top defence officials agreed on Aug 7 to allow observers from the Asean regional bloc to inspect disputed border areas and help ensure hostilities do not resume following a violent five-day conflict that ended in a ceasefire late in July. The South-east Asian neighbours saw the worst fighting in over a decade in July , including exchanges of artillery fire and jet fighter bombing runs that claimed at least 43 lives and displaced more than 300,000 people on both sides of the border. The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand came to the negotiating table only when US President Donald Trump told them that tariff negotiations would not continue unless there was peace, Reuters exclusively reported. Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha and Thailand's acting defence minister Nattaphon Narkphanit met at Malaysia's Armed Forces headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 7 to thrash out the terms of a permanent cessation of hostilities. 'There will be an observation team of Asean military attaches based in Thailand and Cambodia, led by Malaysia,' Mr Nattaphon told reporters at a press conference after the meeting, adding that foreign inspectors based in either country would not cross the border. Fans from as far as South Korea turned up in Taiwan's Nantou county to welcome heart-throb Greg Hsu as he completed his military service on Aug 6. The 34-year-old, also known as Greg Han, enlisted in August 2024. He served as a member of the Public Welfare Ambassador Group in Nantou after completing basic military training in September 2024. At about 12.10pm on Aug 6, he emerged from the Department of Conscription Administration in Nantou, wearing a black short-sleeved T-shirt, black shorts and a black baseball cap. The Taiwanese actor bowed to the waiting media and greeted fans as he walked out of the building. He gave a brief interview, saying that his military life in the past year has been fulfilling. 'I was able to recharge and learn new things along the way,' he said. 'I also took the opportunity to slow down and organise my thoughts.' He added that the officers, civil servants and guards at his unit treated him well, with nearby residents giving him extra food when he went out to eat.
